nickah79 Posted November 21, 2007 at 09:14 PM Posted November 21, 2007 at 09:14 PM (edited) Everyone needs to just calm down. She came in at #3. For little promotion, that's not half bad. I mean, she hasn't really been in the public eye for quite some time with being in Vegas for four years now. Plus she doesn't have a hit on the radio. And I'm telling you ... I bet a lot of people are still learning that she has a new album out. Everyone just needs to take a moment and close his/her eyes and think happy, peaceful thoughts. This is not a nightmare nor is it the end of the world nor is it the end of the road for Celine. Edited November 21, 2007 at 09:15 PM by nickah79 Quote

Teodora Posted November 21, 2007 at 10:08 PM Posted November 21, 2007 at 10:08 PM I think we should stop worring so much about chart position and just enjoy this amazing album. Sony needs a better marketing team, sales don't depend on the quality of the music, but on the promotion. About Alicia: first, she sells mainly in the US. She doesn't have the world wide fan base Celine does. If she had to lose the first chart position to somebody, I'm glad it's Alicia, she's a great too. Does she have what it takes to still be in the business 26 years from now? I doubt it. This is like when Norah Jones first appeared and everyone was so hyped and she sold like crazy and they gave her a billion Grammies... and where is she now? I know she's got a new album out this year, but let's be honest... She'll be gone in a blink of an eye... Like some of you said above, it's an amazing thing what Celine does, considering she's not a native English speaker. More than that, she's a native French speaker and there have always been frictions between the two cultures. Even more, she Canadian... If I had a penny for every stupid jokes about Canadians I heard in American movies, series, TV shows.... media in general... Celine's greatest success is the fact she's above all cultural, national etc problems. She sends out a multi-cultural message, just by doing what she's doing and that's amazing. And she's raising her son in that spirit too. I could not be prouder of her, no matter if her album gets to number one or not. Quote

Shaun Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:19 PM Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:19 PM I think it's a decent result in the US, just look at the competition this week! Add to that Celine has not had widespread support or exposure from the lead off single! It's a stunning result but the key now is sustained sales. kidkidkidkid Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:59 PM Posted November 21, 2007 at 11:59 PM Alicia Keys storms The Billboard 200 this week with "As I Am" (J), which debuts at No. 1 after selling 742,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the best sales week for a solo female artist since Norah Jones' "Feels Like Home" shifted 1 million copies in 2004. In a week where every top 10 album shifted more than 100,000 units, Josh Groban's "Noel" (143/Reprise) zooms 6-2 with a 93% increase to 223,000. Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" (Columbia), her first new pop album in four years, opens at No. 3 with 214,000. The multi-label, multi-artist "Now 26" collection is new at No. 4 with 208,000, the third lowest opening tally for the "Now" line. ~billboard.com Quote
idroveallnight Posted November 22, 2007 at 12:10 AM Posted November 22, 2007 at 12:10 AM How in the hell did Alicia sell 742,000 copies? That's unbelievable. She sold half a million more copies than Celine and I saw much more exposure from Celine than her last week. The problem is that Celine isn't getting enough radio attention. It seems like all her releases since 2002 were released in vain (no Grammy nominations, no top 10 hits). What's wrong with the world??? Quote

LuisMa Posted November 22, 2007 at 12:37 AM Posted November 22, 2007 at 12:37 AM From Billboard Chart Alert: Celine Dion's return to the pop scene, "Taking Chances," bows at No. 3 with 214,000. Her last proper studio album was 2003's "One Heart," which started at No. 2 with 432,000. (Since then she has released a number of French-language sets, a live album from her Las Vegas show and a concept album with baby photographer Anne Geddes.) ... The "Now 26" compilation begins at No. 4 with 208,000. It's the third lowest opening sum for the regular "Now" line of albums ... A few steps down the chart, Led Zeppelin's "Mothership" hits collection bows with 136,000 at No. 7. Digital downloads of the album accounted for 25% of the set's first week sales. The band's catalog debuted digitally on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Over on Top Digital Albums, the iTunes-exclusive "The Complete Led Zeppelin" set, priced at $99.99, debuts at No. 12 with nearly 5,000. Quote

Even without Quebec, they're still twice as strong as Celine's own US sales. That's something to chew on, for those who read a little too much into that silly Halifax flap... Quote

Prince Whiskers Posted November 22, 2007 at 07:37 AM Posted November 22, 2007 at 07:37 AM First of all, let me just say this: DRAMA on the forum>>>> DRAMA in a Celine Dion ballad It's sooooooooooooo obvious that this album needs a radio hit and TC was quite an unwise choice as the first single bec. it doesn't have that X-factor that would instantly blow away the average listener and more importantly, it lacks the drama that Celine's big vocals never fail to feed on. ONLY pop ballads are outmoded, folks. Celine's voice is for all times!!!! What she needs to make a bonafide comeback on the radio are not songs that attempt to pass her off as "cool" or "fresh" (EOM/CFTF) but MODERN sounds that KEEP IN MIND the fact that she's still the world's best vocalist. ( IGNL feat. Ne-Yo/ FA/ Alone and This Time on AC). Her voice has always been her strongest point and the one thing that still separates her from the rest, so why abandon it now? For her to sideline her dramatic songs will be alienating to her millions of traditional fans, those people who'd be wanting to buy the CD and not illegally download it somewhere.
