Here the no.1 Céline hater in the US, Roger Friedman:

Britney’s Over, Here Comes Alicia Vs. Celine

Tomorrow was the day Britney Spears’s “Blackout” album was supposed to have been released. Remember “Blackout”? It was so two weeks ago! The CD is #30 right now on amazon.com and falling fast off the charts.

That leaves three divas for tomorrow, two of whom will get big PR pushes. Alicia Keys has her spectacular “As I Am” album hitting stores, while Celine Dion is returning after four years with “Taking Chances.”

And then, with less fanfare but just as important, Aretha Franklin’s got her Duets album called Jewels in the Crown. There’s a couple of new tracks with Fantasia and John Legend, as well as some recent chart hits with Annie Lennox (the great “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves”), George Michael ("I Knew You Were Waiting for Me"), plus Keith Richards, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, Frank Sinatra, and Mary J Blige. It’s a must have for any music fan.

/**/ All three releases are from Sony BMG, the latter two from the BMG end of things.

In the main arena, though, it’s Alicia vs. Celine since Britney ran scared out of the room. Her “Blackout” is pretty much of a dud now 13 days after release. Maybe because they couldn’t do promotion or interview, Jive Records seems to have called it a day. When the single “Gimme More’ stalled ten days ago, they should have gone to another track. They had plenty from which to choose. But nothing’s happened, and the momentum is gone.

Alicia’s CD, as I’ve written before, could not be better. It’s a picture of young genius that’s reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, or even Aretha. “Superwoman,” a nod to Stevie, is a remarkable ballad that will blaze on radio when it’s released. But right now Keys on the top of the charts with the anthemic “No One,” a hook so memorable it’s hard to get it out of your head. Then “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” is coming as the follow up. There are at least five singles, maybe six, from “As I Am,” that should carry the album through the 2009 Grammys.

Celine is another story. She says she’s “taking chances,” but mostly she sounds like she’s taking Ambien. It’s a very poorly sequenced album, too. The two hottest tracks, called “Can’t Fight the Feeling” and “Just Fade Away” are buried on the CD at number 11 and 14 respectively. They should have been at 1 and 3, or 2 and 4 at the very least. Instead, “Taking Chances” sounds initially like a lush Enya based dream with the exception of a Linda Perry track at number 4 called “My Love.” (No matter whether Alicia or Celine does better, Perry is the winner for her work on both albums.) Sony should get right on that “Fade Away” track and fast.

One good thing about “Taking Chances”: Celine is no longer pretending to be a co-writer on the songs. In the past she and husband Renee Angelil demanded a songwriting credit and a slice of the publishing from contributors. If they’re still taking the kickback, it’s at least not in the byline.

Celine appears on “Oprah” today. It’s her only shot at finding an audience. Whether she keeps them beyond that is another matter.

I bought the album from HMV this morning and it is all over the store....THE FIRST CD YOU SEE. From Prerelases only it has entered the stores weekly chart. So far here are the number I can find

HMV No 4 (on pre sales)

Play.com No9

Amazon No 20

IN reality if HMV have it at No 4, it is likely to enter at around this number and I suspected months ago the top 3 consist of the Leona Lewis, The Spice Girls and The Killers (its going to be tough to be these 3 this week I think)

Is that roger person Alica's personal bithc or something? :whistling:

Poor review! strange he didn't even batter Céline for covering alone...:whistling:

oh and seb... you're in the wrong thread! :P

It's not a review Dejvej. It's article about charting. It doesn't deserve to be posted there cuzz it's poorly written and shows a clear bias. Taking Chances and As I Am are both great CDs on their own terms. Friedman hates Céline and hated her since day 1. Edited by Céline's Blues

When will we know the chart from last week? I mean this is the daily chart, right?

Where entered ANDHC after a week?

However, the first place is blocked everywhere :

US/Alicia

UK/Leone and co

Japan : BackstreetBoys

France:Hallyday

I don't know if she will be number one somewhere in its first week!

Alicias doesnt come out until next week along with Kylies new album but to be honest Alicia first album was top 10 but her second album and her unplugged album didnt do as well so she isnt a large threat in the UK. I think she is great and deserves great success in the UK but R&B like hers is not as big as hip hop or rock/indie type bands and singers

Expect a #5 or #6 debut in Taking Chances. If it charts higher, Celine really rocks in Japan then :D

She has to be number one in Canda and France at least..Maybe in Germany too

Above all, if she is no5 , it will be her third highest position there after All the way(no1) and These are special times(no4).

And this chart include Japanese releases too, not western music only. So #5 is quite good for Japan. And consider Celine is not even for promo herself.

There are bigger stands with Spice Girls and Leona in Zavvi (Virgin new name) and HMV - although Celine's album is well placed in HMV chart at number 4. 1 is Leona, 2 is Led Zeppelin and 3 is Spice Girls

I think there is a chance that Celine will jump to number 1 when the TV special is aired.

I have already bought 2 copies. I think Leona was getting played in the stores also :-(

I read a couple of articles today and they are saying its Spice Girls and Leona competing and not even mentioning Celine

I never even knew the song the orchestra was playing........

It's hard competition for Celine in the UK now.

So suddenly, it's clear to me

Things change

Our future lies in here and now

We live it through somehow

Now the greatest reward

Is the love that I can give

I'm here for you now

For as long as I live

You made me who I am

Actually, it's not just in the UK.. I think in the States too and maybe in the UWC she won't debut at #1.. but I just hope she CLIMBS to the top in the coming weeks cos that shows that her album is really doing well even when all the promos might have stopped
Posted (edited)

I expect a Top 5 placing. She won't be number 1 and most certainly not 2....

(in Germany)

But she might enter the chart with 2 albums: TC and the Re-Edition of TAST "Ihre schönsten Weihnachtslieder"

I think she can be 1 in Switzerland, BElgium and Canada.

In the UK, this week is the toughest week of the whole year to release an album. THE most hyped album of the year comes out (Leona) and naturally there is massive hype around The Spice Girls album. I'd be quite happily for Celine to quietly sneak into the Top 5 album chart in the UK and sell consistently for a long period of time.

Me too overall she will sell more I think.

I have to say I read 5 national newspapers today and all of them promoted Leona (one saying AT LAST THE DEBUT ALBUM BY LEONA) and the Spice Girls but NOT ONE OF CELINE. What in gods name is going on. TV is good and millions watch it that is true but more people read newspapers every day and it is a VITAL part of promotion :nono:

True but if Sony wanted Celine in the papers they could've paid for adverts. There were countless adverts for Leona in The Sun today, on every other page in fact. How many for Celine? None. Strange to think they have the same record company. Edited by Shaun

Because Lenoa is young, she's fresh, she comes from a reality show, because there is a big buzz surrounding her, because she has potential, and because she still has everything to proove. And also maybe beacause except a nice voice, she doesn't have any particularity or personnality. -_-

It's totally different for celine now...What Leona is doing...Celine did it and had it 10-15years ago... And Sony knows that...They just can't act the same way for each new album as if she was 25 years old. They also can't act the same way for a singer that is known since one year in only one country, while Celine has an international status...There always be countries where she will have less promotion than national artists...Just logical.

And when you think about it, the buzz surrounding celine new album is still quite amazing.

She is trying new stuff, with an amazing album that she will be promoted during 1 year thanks to the Tour.... Let the other new stars being number 1 and just enjoy Celine's new album.

Early reports suggest that on day 1 sales in the UK, Leona Lewis has outsold the rest of the top 10 combined.
