smw Posted August 28, 2016 at 08:27 PM Posted August 28, 2016 at 08:27 PM The song that has grown the most on me is Plus qu'ailleurs. At first I thought it was a bit nasal and the enunciation wasn't the best even if I really liked the rhythm/melody.But now I realize that Céline probably just recorded it like Francis Cabrel sings (he's from the South of France where the accent is more nasal) and she just reproduced his style. But after listening to it at least 10 times, I LOVE IT! I love this song too. One of my favorites and I think it's a great and unexpected album opener! 3 Quote

LauCH Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:23 AM Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:23 AM This is the only song that I really dislike. It does me nothing. It's boring like hell and even the lyrics won't change it. I thought it when I heard it during the contest and Celine's version hasn't changed it. how can you dislike it so much? I know taste is a very personal thing and I'm not judging you at all -- but wow, this is such an emotional song, the lyrics and meaning behind this song is so intense. It was written by someone who's friend committed suicide. It's a really deep and sad song, but again, taste is very personal 1 Quote
louisechf Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:25 AM Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:25 AM Im obsessed with this album. It's so different from what I expected. For some reason I expected D'elles meets Sans Attendre, but instead we got One Heart meets a breath of fresh air. It's much more upbeat and soul-ish than what I thought she would do in French. I don't speak or understand French, but this got me hooked instantly. The song I am most surprised with is "A vous". Nothing like Celine has done before, and it's almost got a Spanish-latin vibe to it. I'm in love with several songs so far. It's too early to pick favorites, but just love these: L'toile, Ma faille, Encore un soil, Les yeux au ciel, Ordinaire, Tu sauras, and A vous. I have a question to you guys who speak and understand French though. Take "Le blues du businessman" for example. Her pronunciation of the letter "R" is so noticeably gargle-y in this song and in her earlier French albums. This sound is gone now, and i'm wondering what happened? Is she pronouncing the words differently, or is there some other explanation? I find her newer French albums easier to listen to because I think it sounds so beautiful, but some of her older stuff is a little too "hard" in a way. Her french albums usually takes me a while to ease into, but this was just right there.+1 louisechf with love Quote
LauCH Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:34 AM Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:34 AM 1- Plus Qu'ailleurs 7 / 10It's a good opening for the album, not my favorite but I won't skip it. 2- L'étoile 8/10Love it! Makes me want to dance. 3- Ma Faille 9.5/10Beautiful, emotional, love it!!! 4- Encore Un Soir 9.5/10JJG, nothing else to say 5- Je Nous Veux 4/10That's my least favorite, I don't know, it's just boring for me. 6- Les Yeux Au Ciel 9/10Cute lyrics, great beat! 7- Si C'était À Refaire 7/10Like the notes she hits in this song, but not so special. 8- Ordinaire 5000/10My ABSOLUTE favorite, I am OBSESSED with this song, it's not even funny. Powerful, dramatic, PERFECT! 9- Tu Sauras 8/10Catchy song and her voice sounds nice, but it's not so special again for me. 10- Toutes Ces Choses 6/10I like the emotion in her voice in that song, classic balade. 11- Le Bonheur En Face 8.5/10I like the rhythm in this song. Reminds me of ''Surprise Surprise'', like ''waves'' 12- À La Plus Haute Branche 10/10The message is really sad, the lyrics beautiful, her interpretation beautiful. This song is truly amazing! 1 Quote
CelineDionFreak Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:43 AM Posted August 29, 2016 at 12:43 AM At first I wasn't sure how I felt about them including Trois Heures Vingt remastered on the album... But now after I listened to it a few times, it's lovely, I adore that they made that decision. It is a sad song now, but it means so much more that they included the old version. Almost a tribute of sorts. stone Posted August 29, 2016 at 02:49 AM Posted August 29, 2016 at 02:49 AM (edited) So I wanted to listen to this album for the weekend before reviewing it. I too will stand up for the album opener, I think PQA is actually a great unexpected first song for the album. It's very easy on the ears and has a relaxed, calm, acoustic feel. It's quite fitting and I love that it starts off the album with in this light and relaxed blasé kind of way. I'm not a fan of the Zaho songs, Ma Faille and Tu Sauras whatsoever. In Ma Faille it just seems like she's just imitating Zaho or just sang over her voice. I totally can see why people like it because it's pure pop and catchy but it's just doesn't cut it for me. It just seems like a song for your average pop singer and comparing it to a JJG production, it's nowhere near there in my opinion of course. Tu Sauras is repetitive and I don't know what's the right word but it has an immature pedestrian teenager production to me. I do absolutely love Les Yeux Au Ciel and hoping it becomes the second single. I like it more the L'etoile which is a great song but something about LYAC, I replay it over and over and never get sick of it. Her voice is great on this album and Ordinaire is actually growing on me. It's taking time and effort but with each listen I'm appreciating it more. I absolutely love Le Bonheur En Face. The structure of the song, the orchestral arrangement is top notch and her voice is soooo good here. I love the dual voice track layover in different keys at the end of the choruses. Nice touch! I can't review the bonus tracks since we in the U.S can't get it and I'm still waiting for the vinyl to come tmw but overall I'd say this is a great album. For those who's complaining about it not having a theme, I'm perfectly okay that this is the first French album that doesn't really one. A collection of good songs (minus the Zaho songs) sometimes is refreshing! Also I have to agree with using the same photographer. It just doesn't seem right but also very unoriginal. I absolutely adored the art of Sans Attendre and René fought with Céline with going with that theme instead of her typical photoshoot and poses and he was absolutely right! It stood out and made you think of the album as a whole. Also she's photoshopped beyond belief but in the end it's about the music and I'd give this album 8.8 out of 10! scielle Posted August 29, 2016 at 03:42 AM Posted August 29, 2016 at 03:42 AM (edited) Now that I've had a few days to let it sink in, here's my ranking.Verdict: could have been a great record, if only it wasn't so overproduced. My top 5 (just beautiful in every way):1. A la plus haute branche (10/10) - Easily the best thing on the album, along with EUS itself, and just so magical live. Saw the Montreal show 6/10 times, and this was always the one I looked forward to most.2. EUS (10/10)3. Bonheur en face (9.5/10) - lovely melody & lyrics, she sounds gorgeous and it's tastefully produced4. Si c'etait a refaire (9.5/10) - just beautiful on all fronts5. 3:20 (9/10) Almost there (lots to love about these ones, just not quite as magical as the Top 5):6. Ordinaire (8.5/10) - I'm all for rewriting lyrics, but in this case I don't think they were rewritten all that well. Still, she completely inhabits this song, and I don't think there's ever been a song that fit Celine better than this one.7. Plus qu'ailleurs (8/10) - melodically not quite as memorable as the others, but some of the best lyrics on the album and such authentic delivery and production8. Toutes ces choses (7.5/10)9. Je nous veux (7/10) Meh...OK...but largely ruined by production:10: L'etoile (6.5/10) - This is fabulous, until it hits the overproduced chorus and even more painfully overproduced bridge, which just makes me cringe. Shame, because if not for the shoddy production, could have been great.11: Ma faille (6/10) - Nothing against this song, but melodically it's pretty bland, and again, not a fan of the production12. Les yeux au ciel (6/10) - Makes me wish I didn't understand French. Would probably quite like it then, but they lyrics are so awkward that I find this hard to listen to. Too bad, because otherwise it's rather good (well, other than some over-the-top production, again)13: Ma force (5/10) - I do occasionally love me some country, but this leaves me cold (and if they were going for authentic country, I'd like it far more raw than this). And the what-were-they-thinking-this-is-awful (plus booooring) pile:14. Tu sauras (2/10) - as already said by others, this is just formulaic and insipid, and the production all shades of tacky15. A vous (1/10) - cheesy, cheap, vapid, artificial in every way...Tu sauras I can somewhat handle, but this one just elicits a definite  reaction without fail. One point for the sentiment in the lyrics, otherwise I see no redeeming qualities here. Overall, agree with all those who said some of this just sounds waaaay too artificial. Much of the production really ruins it for me. And agree with that Canadian Press review which said some of these songs sound like "someone at the label decided at the last minute they wanted to hit a couple more radio formats with this thing", because clearly a bunch of people here love the exact songs I think completely ruin the album. I suppose it has something for everybody, but a cohesive whole it is not. In general, I don't think it quite measures up to Sans attendre (and needless to say I miss JJG).
