Céline under attack for using playback

At one time I did not like that fact but I've become more accepting of it. Celine can obviously sing without the need for some assistance but the fact is that when you are on a giant world tour, with fans paying a lot of money for your show and expecting 110% from the performance there is a lot on the line. A performer does not want to disappoint their fans and traveling, going to new venues every few nights along with various

changes in the environment that affects her voice make it necessary (I think) to have this kind of back up.

 

If she was just singing for a few months it may be easier not to use it but going on a long tour for a year makes it kind of like an insurance policy. It saves her voice so that she can use it.

go and buy Genesis new dvd.

 

Phil Collings is 65? Don't know

but the dvd is live and is one show only and...

he gives his heart out! There is a song that is 13 minutes long..

and some others which are 6 minutes long...

and don't come saying "ahhh, he does not belts"

He has one hell of a voice LIKE Celine -- but she is younger than him

 

Then... how come.. on the day of the dvd recording

she cannot sing these songs live? Can somebody explain that to me?

Cos i really don't understand... Is she saving her voice to... the eternity?

She can't sing more than 45 minutes long and give high notes anymore...?

cos as I see the list... she does deliver only on It's a man's world

and it's really few hard notes and really fast notes...

 

Will the dvd for the tour be... half live, half mimmed?

If you want to talk about for DVD purposes only, then yes, I wish the entire thing was live, but for every day...no, sorry, I do not see it.

I love her but sorry that lipping thing is unacceptable if you need to pay 200 Euros for a show and neither get a huge fantastic show that takes your breath away like the confessions tour by madonna

 

nor a show that is performed completly live.

 

It is a disaster that she lipped so often in Vegas but it is unforgiveable that she does is while touring the world.

I understand the reason for lipping. She could not have possibly sang those vocally straining songs EVERY night in Vegas. But she wants her fans to hear those songs.....

 

I agree that if her management were a tad bit more understanding of the intelligence of their audience, then they would have been changing up the playback tapes used. Maybe a different one every 6 months or so - if not more often. Some have been used so long - that a toddler would recognize that it's always the same.

 

I also agree that she should just shave these songs out of her tour. She should do a live medley of the songs. That would be PLENTY! Madonna has SO many hits - yet she chooses SOME to sing on tour. That's the way to do it. Leave the audience wanting more. And be genuine while doing so.

 

Lastly, I really hope Celine's team WAKES UP before she starts her tour in America. She has got to stop the lip synching. She doesn't need bad publicity.

 

I honestly believe most critics and such are well aware of her doing this - and they understand why she does - but if the general public finds out, it will be bad news.

With regards to the comment someone made about Phil Collins singing live yes he probably does not lip synch with his band Genesis or solo but that guy is not really considered a great singer. He himself admits he is not. Many years ago, when the groups Genesis' lead singer left the group (Peter Gabriel) they auditioned many singers and the other members did not like anyone else and they asked Phil, who has been their singer ever since! He was/is their drummer who accidently became their singer.

Using playback is an easy alternative because they don't expect the same people to be in the audience every night analyzing every performance. And if the same people are there every night then those are the true fans who would never forsake Celine. A major mistake though is using the same version of TPOL in every CBS special and every live CD/DVD it is included on. The average person would obviously be unaware of anything but avid fans like us know the truth. And the truth is that Celine is the best singer in the world, there's no question about it. And as much as everyone hates to hear this, she has to preserve her voice if we want her to be around for another 20 years...and that can't be done if she sings TPOL, IACBTMN, TLYM, etc live every evening and it would be pointless to exclude those songs from the tour because they are her biggest hits (those are the songs people expect to hear no matter how much new material she's released since then).

 

I definitely agree that there are major changes that need to be addressed before the tour begins in North America. Recording a new live version of all the songs just mentioned would be a good start. If not, maybe fans on here could refrain from posting those particular playbacked performances on YouTube since we know exactly how they will sound and we obviously don't want to start anymore controversy. But hey, if it's worked for this long, I'm sure she'll be able to fly under the radar right through the end of the tour.

This is a woman whom I've been a fan of for 13 years. She was the artist that inspired me to become an admirer of Celine.

 

Yes, she was proclaimed by people on planet Earth as "The Celine Dion of Country Music."

She's got killer pipes, stage presence, a deep connection with her audience, and such a warm spirit - like Celine

 

Many of us here have seen or heard her perform. I don't think I've ever seen her lip a single note for an in-person performance. The only time she lips is for a commercial music video. LOL

 

I've had the honor of witnessing her perform a concert last year. I was in tears watching and listening to her. I was so moved by the beauty of her voice because I sat there feeling her honest energy, her honest voice, her honest struggles, and her true power. I knew she was giving her ALL for that moment, for the people who traveled near and far, and who came to spend the evening with her. Why And when she finished performing, in full glory and power, some of her great hits like the emotionally moving "Anyway," the heartbreaking "Concrete Angel" or the earth-moving "Where Would You Be," the crowd were up on their feet for minutes and minutes! And she was up there smiling non-stop, bowing, wiping tears from her eyes, drinking lots of water, and catching her breath - because she truly knew that "she did it."

 

Martina been in the media spotlight since 1992, yet, she has sung literally her whole life. Martina is now 42 years old. And she appears on more award shows than most entertainers (she's almost everywhere LOL) and goes on tour after tour after tour. Her concerts normally are 20-song sets, and she sings each song completely live from beginning to end. She rarely cut songs, so she would sing them in their entirety. Personally, what I feel about Martina is that going to her concerts, every penny is well-spent and I would even give her some tip because she's so damn amazing! :wub: :laugh:

Isn´t "Concrete Angel" soooo beautiful?

 

This is the magic about doing it live - nobdoy wants to hear singing robots, people want to hear the emotion in the voice.

Coming back to Celine - no wonder that she is being critisized for sounding cold - those stupid playback tapes suck the life out of these beautiful songs.

 

Also, I am not a musician, but I don´t think that "MHWGO" is so extremely difficult to sing - just alone for the fact that she is miming her signature song and closing her concert with a tape she should be outed big time in the media.

 

Anyhow, it is kind of a relief to me that this whole subject starts to make its round in the press - I am a big music fan and was an even bigger fan of Celine - but she DESERVES negative press about this tour.

 

She is playing half of the concerts outdoors where she can not use her "fancy" stage and she is going for the alternative which is is the cheapest of the cheapest.

Cheap sound, cheap lights, every country fair stage looks way better.

 

And the icing of the cake is - you do not only get NO show - you also get half of the songs in playback.

I never said she didn't lipsync. What makes you think so?

The category 1- tickets in Germany were at 400 USD (indoors), just that you know.

Even for the Outdoor-thing (calling it Show would be too much) I payed 260 USD for Cat 1- tickets.

Actually, you are right - given the current tour, Celine SHOULD be compared with Britney or Madonna - and that is NOT a compliment.

 

At least Madonna and Britney put on a great show.

 

But if somebody who is known for the voice, known for being incredible when it comes to singing live does not sing live there is not much left.

Of course, but I'm sure there are people here who don't mind paying money just to see Celine stand in front of them. Even if she were taking a nap on stage for 1.5 hours, I'm sure there are people who would still pay $250 to see that.

I agree though that Celine should see this and consciously think that some changes really need to be made- she's being promoted as the world's biggest selling female artist ever ever and around the world she is known as one of the best vocalists- if she wants to remain where she is- and her pedestal is dangerously shaky at the mo anyhow- she really needs to take stock of things like this, not have it covered up by her minions so she doesn't have a hissy-fit.
