Céline themed movies: "Aline/The Voice Of Love" and "Celine before Celine"

I watched a couple interviews with Valerie. She said she doesn't know anymore than the rest of the world about Celine's injury/illness, but she wishes her well. Then she made a separate statement that was put in an interview that was longer.

I’m not even going to keep posting press anymore because there is just so much! Its quite wild. Céline/ Aline all over French TV, radio, podcasts, print press, outdoor media. Just everywhere.

I’ve said it before but it bears repeating - get Gaumont to promo her next album! 😜 Because let’s face it - Sony’s efforts have been child’s play in comparison. (Yes, I know, I know. Big difference in budgets - the film being a multiple of what an album generally is - but man, it all makes you wish for a bigger push for her actual work.)

Interesting to read in this one that music rights cost EUR1.3m, and that they couldn’t get POL (songwriters didn’t approve).

BTW, do we know who this French manager is of Celine’s that Valérie keeps referencing? The one who apparently said she’s reluctant to show Céline the movie for fear it’ll make her cry (but who OK’d the production)?

Also, according to this (about 48 min in) the call has been out for some time for songs for a new French album.

^ Effect of tonight’s Céline-themed TV specials in France. Seriously, this film will do a lot for reviving her catalog, if nothing else.

I wonder that too. My interpretation was that Valerie means some like French liaison on the business side, rather than Celine's second manager. Probably someone at Sony or some other person in a suit somewhere.

I was about to write the exact same thing. It's everywhere. And she's everywhere. Even on the day of release, Valérie is still presenting the film in a theater. It's Gaumont and, I think, Valérie herself is willing to promote the film, and the media are not going to refuse Valérie's presence.

Yeah, that's my take as well. I vaguely recall seeing a name, several years back, but don't remember who it was. Definitely a local rep / agent though, not a manager in the same sense Dave & Denis are.

Maybe we'll find out from the credits' "thank you" section. :giggle:

For what it's worth, IMDB has US release date listed as Jan 21st - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9735462/releaseinfo?ref_=ttfc_ql_2

Finally some more concrete dates. I had to remind myself and search multiple times just to remember the French date, and I know it moved around a lot.

But it's finally here! Awesome for their whole team after so much waiting.

Is Valerie very beloved by the French? I know she has been famous for a long time. I saw that I saved something on my Youtube like 10 years ago, a random video of her that I came across. I think I must have saved it because she looked like Celine, because I couldn't understand the comedy sketch at all lol.

I'm very curious to see how they're going to promote it here. It's a tricky one. And Roadside Attractions recently had some exec turnover in their marketing and distribution (https://deadline.com/2021/11/roadside-attractions-restructure-dennis-oconnor-david-pollick-departing-1234868561/). That could be a good thing - a new team eager to impress and going the extra mile, or a bad thing - the new guard not really knowing what they're doing.

Depends on who they hired. Are you a film buff or are you just investigating these things because of Aline?

Why do you think it's 'a tricky one'?

Well I’m in the entertainment business. Music now, but previously film & TV finance, and Deadline is an industry trade I occasionally still keep an eye on.

And tricky because the French audience is more comfortable with the Céline/ Rene story. They’ve seen them from the early days, in countless interviews and appearances together, being comfortably themselves in their first language, Céline talking about him at length. Most of the anglophone audience doesn’t have this context; many just see Rene as the “creepy old dude who must have groomed her”. So I’m interested to see how the US distributors handle it.

The French reviews are pretty unanimously positive, while the English are pretty unanimously perplexed. It doesn’t help that they have no idea who Valérie is and what she does.

I haven't seen any English reviews that I can recall (I am trying to hold off) , but I did see the English-language anticipatory press. I've complained about it before, but English-language coverage of Celine---particularly in North America--is so annoying, lazy, uninspired, unoriginal, and just horrible.

I am sure it will only get more infuriating once the promo train starts going.

By the way, the American Lifetime Telefilm "Celine" will be broadcast on primetime next Sunday on TMC french channel, and there is another documentary next Tuesday on TMC also.

Yesterday's documentary did not really well...

Interestingly, the Jan 21 US release date happens to be during Sundance (which was top of mind for me as I just spent the weekend in Park City). Probably a long shot, but would be pretty cool if the US premiere actually happened at Sundance!

Did they also plan the French release to be during her Las Vegas return? I was wondering about that

When will it be released in Quebec?

USA?
