Thanks for the links. Yes, if these critics aren't consistent then it just exposes them even more. For me, it's just an offshoot of their dislike of Celine and how they continue to paint her as uncool--and all the other dumb stuff they say.

I found the movie awful and very poorly research. I find it weird that Valérie wants it to be an hommage lol.

the point is they have the right to have their opinion. What is funny for people from France is not the always funny to us, humor doesn't translate well a lot of times. Haven't seen the movie still, maybe i will like it , maybe not. If i don't like it, i sure hope i have the right to do .

 

It is not the point of liking the film or not, it's just the point of understanding it. If you want the film to be different and take the joy and humour out of it. I can't tell more without spoiling it for you.

Ouch. I was really looking forward to seeing Valérie on Julie's show, seeing as one of her interviews is recreated in the movie. I find it odd Valérie wouldn't want to come on and explain her approach. (Per the below, she canceled her appearance after finding out about Claudette and Michel's comments.)

What I thought about the names of the relatives (minor spoilers) :

 

 

 

They were hilarious. All the brothers are called Jean-something and all the sisters are called something-ette. So you have :Jean-Bobin, Jean-Paul, Jean-Pierre, etc... and you have Claudette, Paulette, Ginette, etc... And the anomaly is Aline. And of course, she has a special name and she turns out that she has a special talent. Her name comes from the song Aline by Christophe just like Céline was named after Céline by Aufray.

The critic wrote "nobody's called Anglomar", ok but nobody's called Adhémar either. The name Anglomar of course refers to "Angle mort" which means "blind spot". I don't understand why she would call her that way but why not. It sounds like what a character in an Astérix cartoon might be called.

Also, the film Aline is almost set in a parallel universe. Her record is called "La voix du bon Dion". But what's the meaning of Dion in her universe? At one point, a sibling swears "Oh mon Dion" instead of "Oh mon Dieu", "oh my God". Is Dion a synonym of God in that universe?

Also, about the Vatican pronounced Votican. It is true that Québecers pronounce the a like o. It is common knowledge. Valérie never invented that. Any French imitator who wants to take a Québec accent turns his a in o. And they repeat Vatican because it's a running gag. If you don't repeat it then there's no running gag and no gag at all. And the most hilarious is when Aline utters the final line "I don't even know where the Vatican is."

 

 

About Fred, the make-up artist (minor spoilers)

 

 

Valérie turned Pepe Munoz into a make-up artist. So what? In the movie "Judy" which is marketed as a biopic and not a parody biopic, there is a gay couple that invites Judy Garland to have dinner at their home. They never existed. Even though it is supposed to be a true story, the gay couple never existed in Judy's life but they were created for the film as an allusion to her gay fandom.

 

In Céline's life, she truly has a gay best-friend called Pepe Munoz. Here, her best friend (her Pepe) is a make-up artist who is gay but mentions it only once in the film. He is not the caricature of a gay man with mannerisms. At the end, Guy-Claude dies and Aline goes to sleep next to him. Obviously, she doesn't sleep WITH him but NEXT to him, like you can sleep with a friend in the same bed. It's almost something I could imagine Céline do with Pepe.

 

 

 

About Aline getting rich (spoilers)

 

The scene where she gets lost in her big new house was hilarious and unexpected. Of course, it's a scene that could have been in any other film dealing with a rich person and it is not related to Céline specifically. It is meant to show the fact that Aline has made it, not to show the fact that Aline/Céline was stupid. Claudette said that Céline never got lost in her home. How could she know? Maybe Céline did get lost in her home but never phoned to her sisters to tell them about it. Anyway, why not? It serves the comic aspect of the movie.

I find Claudette’s comment about how “she never got lost in her home” so bizarre.

Like, really? This is what you zero in on? If so, you really don’t know much about movie-making or storytelling in general. It’s like saying her dress in such-and-such event was green, where in reality it was blue. Just a completely inconsequential detail.

I loved the soundtrack!!! They kept the song's arrangements quite faithfull to the original, but at the same time they have some new elements that sounds interesting...

And Victoria's voice is very pleasant to hear...

I haven't watched the movie yet, but I do understand the POV of (some) Québec critics.

 

I try to imagine an equivalent in my own country (with a Dutch actress playing a Belgian role).

Not one person in the entire country would be able to look past the accent, I can tell you this with certitude.

The movie would be ridiculed and wouldn't stand a chance if the accent was anything less than 100% credible.

And it's similar for Québec I'm sure.

Anything less than a perfect imitation would be seen as ridicule by some.

I don't think Valérie meant it like that *at all*, but she really misjudged the importance of accents.

 

As for Claudette & Michel:

I've noticed that a lot of big, tight-knit families are similar in a sense.

They share an idealized 'family mythology', they revere their parents and they do not react kindly to anything that might challenge either the mythology or the parents.

Let's just say I have great-uncles who would act exactly like this if someone strays from the 'real' story.

We weren't that poor. Our house was never dirty. Our Mother never talked like that.

"D'amour ou d'amitié" is very good...

"Let's talk about love" is the best song for me!!! Amazing high notes...

Victoria nailed "All by myself"...

"My heart will go on" could have a better production with the instrumentals, but she did a good job with the voice...

There are moments in "I'm alive" that sounds exactly like Celine was singing it...

"Treat her like a lady" is such a random choice lol But Victoria's vocals are crazy here....

"Ordinaire" is another highlight for me... Amazing!

 

 

 

Overall I'm really surprised by how good it sounds... Victoria was a great choice!

I probably won’t notice it in French since I’m not fluent anyway, but I don’t really notice or care about it in English movies either. At one moment, Guy-Claude has problems with learning all the names of the siblings. One brother says "Who am I ?" Guy makes a guess "You're Jean... ?" The brother says "You don't take any risk by saying that". That was funny. Then, Guy says to another person "You're Jean..." and the man replies "No, I'm not a Jean. I'm Antoinette's husband."

 

 

See, comedies are composed of set-ups and pay-offs. If you take away the set-up, you also take away the pay-off. The pay-off can appear a long time after the set-up.

I’m Polish Canadian, actually, but spent several years as a student in Montreal, and several years living and working in England, and now in the US. So English is my 2nd language (which I learned as a teenager), and French my 3rd. And since I’ve lived in each of UK, US and Canada, the accents are interchangeable to me and not something that throws me off at all. I barely notice and it certainly doesn’t come into play for me as a culture consumer.
