Balao Posted November 24, 2021 at 08:43 PM Posted November 24, 2021 at 08:43 PM no one says Votican in Québec . This part was so cringy. At the première in MTL no one got the joke lol. Of course, you don't say Votican, you say Vatican but with the accent from Québec, it sounds like Votican to our French ears. As for the joke, it lies in the repetition. In France, we like running gags and there is absolutely nothing to explain. You either get it or you don't.In one old episode of the Simpsons, Bob continually steps on rakes, the handles of which then hit him in the face. The joke is funny then not funny anymore and then eventually it is funny once again. 2 Quote
Ajax Posted November 24, 2021 at 09:39 PM Posted November 24, 2021 at 09:39 PM (edited) Once again, I’m French and didn’t like that much the movie except the first part when Celine is young. And I can also understand how different it can be for the family member to watch it. But the arguments Claudette and Michel used were like so so cringy, stupid and ignorant. I felt very inconfortable for them and Celine. It wasn’t flattery for Celine at all and I hope she can distanciate from them. Whatever if she liked the movie or not. The arguments they used were just so dumb that they looked as uneducated and dumb people. Both of them. Like honesty the anecdote about Celine stealing the sugar in hostels is the cutest thing ever. An image so commonly used to nicely describe people that were poor but stayed humble for example, still close to their roots etc… Claudette : « she never stole sugar » —-> are you f****** serious ??? Same about the fact that she never went through the window with her dress and so many thing she said. Are you joking Claudette or that stupid??? Sorry but that was very inconfortable to whatch them. And I felt sorry for Celine. I even asked myself if it was true as their argument were surreal Edited November 24, 2021 at 09:40 PM by Ajax 6 Quote
québecflower Posted November 24, 2021 at 10:19 PM Posted November 24, 2021 at 10:19 PM It is not the point of liking the film or not, it's just the point of understanding it. If you want the film to be different and take the joy and humour out of it. I can't tell more without spoiling it for you.they have a different take on this than you. Since they are from the family, it is very possible they have more of a first degree take on this. They did not find it funny, totally comprehensive. 2 Quote Plus qu'ailleurs , but now Si c'était à refaire , i still love tant de temps....

québecflower Posted November 24, 2021 at 10:27 PM Posted November 24, 2021 at 10:27 PM I think you're American or (English) Canadian, no? In which case, just like Valérie, you're from a big country/language region. Which is simply a different experience. Americans don't care about accent much in my experience (because you are confronted with a plethora of accents on a daily basis I guess). Which is a great thing in many ways. But it's just different for smaller, more marginalized regions.i saw multiple interviews where , when a film is in Boston , if they don't have the accent, it is drama... they have their accents too. I don't care that much with this movie because it is clear than it was done great regards toward Céline, if it was mocking her, would be different. 1 Quote Plus qu'ailleurs , but now Si c'était à refaire , i still love tant de temps....

They are of course entitled to an opinion and it’s understandable they would view it all very differently than the rest of us. That’s to be expected. But that TV appearance made them look far worse than anything in the movie. They really did themselves a disservice.(And it’s interesting to see how many people on social media are commenting in response, saying they completely missed the point.) I’m really curious what RC thinks of it. And I’m sure he’ll get Céline to watch it, if she hasn’t already. Of course, she might choose not to comment and we’ll never know what she truly thinks of it all. Edited November 24, 2021 at 11:06 PM by scielle 2 Quote

That shows how very little research Valerie did. It would be like if someone in Quebec does a movie about Edith Piaf, call it Judith Paf and have the character say 10 times “du coup où est mon beret”. Juste caricatural and bad taste Quote

I felt very inconfortable for them and Celine. It wasn't flattery for Celine at all and I hope she can distanciate from them. Whatever if she liked the movie or not. Are you joking Claudette or that stupid??? Sorry but that was very inconfortable to whatch them. And I felt sorry for Celine. I even asked myself if it was true as their argument were surreal I think that not only Claudette or Michel did not appreciate the movie but Celine as well. Hence, she is doing her own biopic to tell her own story. I think that movie fueled it because it clearly was not representing her thus they couldn't name it Celine Dion but went with Aline Dieu (Dieu =God in French lol). They mentioned some details that made them cringe but overall, they know Celine's story better than Valerie and Valerie most likely did not consult them for approval or fact checking before she went ahead and did it. They said the movie was based on what people's perception of Celine was and not on what really went down. Michel and Claudette are the closest you can get to Celine so I don't think them not being in it made them turned off but checking with them for approval and fact checking is essential as you won't get any better juice on Celine than from those 2. They are already wealthy and well-known they do not need to be in that film. Quote
scielle Posted November 24, 2021 at 11:55 PM Posted November 24, 2021 at 11:55 PM (edited) checking with them for approval and fact checking is essentialNo, it's not, far from it. It's not a documentary, but a fiction based on Celine's published account of her life story. The rest is Valerie's artistic vision. That's why it's Aline, not Celine. So she could take creative liberties. She specifically wanted to keep her distance - and chose, for instance, not to film in Celine's former home when given the opportunity. This has been made very clear all along. She offered Celine the opportunity to review the casting, the script, etc. Celine chose not to, which I think really shows her strength of character - not meddling in other people's creative vision. Celine & Sony are making a documentary, not a biopic, and Aline never aspired to be either of those two things. Perhaps the doc was precipitated by Aline, or perhaps not, and it's simply a response to high demand for that type of project and the need to support Celine's streaming numbers (as is often the case when labels get involved in projects like these). manolo19 Posted November 25, 2021 at 01:17 AM Posted November 25, 2021 at 01:17 AM (edited) So the drama goes on. Julie Snyder said she doesn't understand the fact that Valerie cancelled her interview because of Michel and Claudette disapproval. Valerie defended herself saying she did not like the concept of the interview having a camera following her in the car right before the premiere. She did not understand why Julie didnt say anything positive of the movie in front of Michel and Claudette because one year ago Julie told Valerie that she really liked the film but did not share that enthusiasm on her tv show yesterday. Julie answered by a famous quote from Beaumarchais : Sans la liberté de blâmer, il n'est point d'éloge flatteur. (Without the freedom/right to criticize/blame there can't be no genuine praise.) manolo19 Posted November 25, 2021 at 03:24 AM Posted November 25, 2021 at 03:24 AM (edited) Claudette doubled down on Julie talk show tonight ... even interrupted Julie when she said 'Valerie the star who plays Celine' ... Claudette started laughing and told Julie you call her a 'star' with a look of disgust on her face. I'm glad the wife of Antoine Vezina who plays a mix of Celine bothers in the film actually said something in front of Michel and Claudette. She told them it was clear it was a work of fiction and it was not a biography so thats why they didnt recognize themselves. I did not like the movie so much but Claudette reaction is beyond cringe ... she even started singing non je ne regrette rien by Edith Piaf when asked if she regretted the things she said. Yeah, especially given the depressing experience she had with her first foray in Quebec, ~30 years ago, and as I understand was so hurt by it, hasn’t been back with another project since. Until Aline. 1 Quote
PuraVida Posted November 25, 2021 at 04:36 AM Posted November 25, 2021 at 04:36 AM Yes, ET reported on that yesterday (Interestingly, before it came out in French media.) It was also the first time I heard Valérie speak English (see the ET Canada clip in the tweet I posted yesterday.) I wonder how involved she's going to be in the US release promo. Do you mind reposting the link to Valerie speaking in English? Couldn't find it. Quote

So as usual, Claudette is simply the loudest and most obnoxious.
