PuraVida Posted August 6, 2021 at 08:03 AM Posted August 6, 2021 at 08:03 AM I wonder if Eddy Marnay will be depicted in the film. There was some drama about how Rene never told Eddy to his face that they were basically moving on from him. That could make for a good scene in the movie. Quote

Remon Posted August 28, 2021 at 10:50 AM Posted August 28, 2021 at 10:50 AM Saw "Aline" yesterday here in The Netherlands and loved it! A little review for who's interested (sorry if there are spoilers). Especially the first hour or so - the 80ies in Quebec - is funny and establishes Céline's family life very well I think. The overall emphasis of the movie is on this period in her life until the marriage. After that, scenes (and years) go quite fast. But that is the story that most people already know because Céline was already famous by then. I think they did very well in keeping Aline/Céline humble, not pretentious and grounded. There's a hilarious scene where she is lost in her own house in Las Vegas (that looks like the white Florida waterslide house). Loved the actress that played Maman Dion. She has some great scenes and lines that made the whole theatre laugh. When Aline's parents marry, they have this conversation under a tree where he says he doesn't want to have kids. After that, you'll see a funny jump-cut edit of all the 13 babies that are begin introduced in the Dieu-house. Also funny: Maman's face when they meet René/Guy-Claude for the first time: 'So you're Céline'. Maman, a little annoyed: 'Non non non, it's Aline'. And loved that they put effort in the details. Like the recreation of the La voix du bon Dieu-cover: it looks the same but if you look good, the title is changed to La voix du bon Dion. And costumes and stage designs (mostly colors) are also quite accurate. Not as impressive as Céline's originals, but the filmmakers didn't have such a big budget of course and you (or at least I did) will see a little resemblance. And although it's weird to see a 50 year old act like a 5-12-15-18-20-30-40 year old, it sets the tone for the rest of the movie: don't take it too seriously. It's not an accurate biography. If you want to see that, this movie is going to be very strange. In a way it reminded me more of Rocketman (the movie about Elton John, although that's more a musical) than the serious Bohemian Rhapsody/Queen-movie. I already knew that they mixed up years and songs to match the narrative, but that is very well done and the average visitor probably doesn't care because it makes sense for the story of the movie. So if you watch it with a mindset not to take it all too seriously, it's enjoyable and touching and I think really contributes to Céline's legacy. Much more than a song like "Superwoman" The only thing that's a pity is that they couldn't clear the rights to some songs. I think a song like "On ne change pas", "The colour of my love" or "Where does my heart beat now" would have fitted the movie very well. There's a lead role for "Ordinaire" and although I never liked the song, I liked it here because it suits the narrative. And they did use a lot of original songs that mean something to Céline and that she covered somewhere in her career (like "At seventeen" and "Nature boy"). My main question that will probably never be answered: I wonder if Céline saw it and what she'd think about it. 5 Quote

scielle Posted September 28, 2021 at 01:15 AM Posted September 28, 2021 at 01:15 AM BTW, I haven't posted this previously, but this is from late July (shortly post Cannes screening). CBC's Q Screen Panel discussing Aline in this clip: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-50-q/clip/15857150-the-q-screen-panel-explores-controversies-behind-films Most of the discussion is about the Anthony Bourdain doc, but they get to Aline about 11 minutes in, and finish off the segment with Je danse dans ma tete. It's only a few minutes, but the take-aways for the two panelists are pretty much what we've already seen in a lot of the English-language reviews. Incidentally, interesting to see the Variety article from earlier today call it a "critically acclaimed musical comedy-drama". I'm curious to see what Roadside and SG do with the promo.Roadside is currently working The Alpinist, which looks fabulous, if you're a fan of Free Solo. They also distributed Manchester by the Sea, Dear White People, Peanut Butter Falcon, the Jennifer Lawrence breakout Winter's Bone, and did US distro for Xavier Dolan's Mommy. That's a nice track record for audience-pleasing indies. SG's most recent success was Another Round, which won the best foreign film Oscar this year. 1 Quote
