Ajax Posted July 16, 2021 at 09:15 AM Posted July 16, 2021 at 09:15 AM It is really weird the gap between the Anglo and French critics. Even the quite reputable and Indie magazine Les Inrock made a good critic of the movie. https://www.lesinrocks.com/cinema/et-si-aline-etait-le-meilleur-film-de-valerie-lemercier-396487-14-07-2021/ 1 Quote

scielle Posted July 16, 2021 at 09:56 PM Posted July 16, 2021 at 09:56 PM Such a rarity for Celine Dion to be mentioned on NPR. What a treat! Maybe in the past, but she’s had quite a few mentions (in positive light) in recent years. It’s all just another symptom of the Célinaissance! 1 Quote

PuraVida Posted July 17, 2021 at 01:52 PM Posted July 17, 2021 at 01:52 PM I won't say the majority because I haven't been following all the reviews, but it definitely seems that some English-language reviewers do not know how to have an authentic opinion that isn't the boilerplate, "traditional" cultural stance that they've had towards Celine over the past 20 years. These buzzwords of "bonkers" "berserk" "wild" and "kooky" are the only way they know how to engage with her. She's never looked at with true depth and curiosity, it's always this "camp" and "wacky" French Canadian. Obviously they are reviewing the movie and Valerie and not Ceilne herself, but I can't help but think they are just carrying over those perspectives. Cate Blanchette played Bob Dylan....who gives a you know what that Valerie is playing Celine at every age? It's an artistic choice that was done seriously, not some carnival act. /rant 4 Quote

jpatdeleon09 Posted July 17, 2021 at 04:32 PM Posted July 17, 2021 at 04:32 PM So, the other Céline movie is real Aline isn't the only film set to come out about the life of Dion. In 2019, it was announced that Quebec director Marc-André Lavoie would be working on a movie tentatively titled Céline Before Celine. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lavoie's project will not only be in English, but will look specifically at the singer's early life leading up to fame. There is currently no release date for Céline Before Celine. Quote
scielle Posted July 17, 2021 at 06:38 PM Posted July 17, 2021 at 06:38 PM Define “real”.Sure, it was announced as in development years ago, but most films in development never get made. Quote

Like it’s not a plan anymore. They are really making it. But for now I’m gonna focused on “Aline” since it gets a lot of postive reviews. Edited July 17, 2021 at 07:02 PM by jpatdeleon09 Quote

PuraVida Posted July 18, 2021 at 11:44 AM Posted July 18, 2021 at 11:44 AM What I don't get is why an "insane" and "horrifying" movie would get a 5 minute standing ovation? The Anglophone reviewers are on something. Quote
Xpresso Posted July 18, 2021 at 11:46 AM Posted July 18, 2021 at 11:46 AM The anglo press is confused - just like we were when we first heard about this project. 1 Quote

jpatdeleon09 Posted July 18, 2021 at 12:14 PM Posted July 18, 2021 at 12:14 PM The main focus of anglo reviewers is the cgi of Aline from age 12 to recent. It’s new to them. Quote

scielle Posted July 18, 2021 at 05:30 PM Posted July 18, 2021 at 05:30 PM I mean, the Niki Caro Callas film has been in development for something like 15 years now. They even took the package to Cannes for presales, with Noomi Rapace attached. And that was 6 years ago now, so… 1 Quote

PuraVida Posted July 19, 2021 at 08:20 PM Posted July 19, 2021 at 08:20 PM (edited) Agreed! It would be one thing if they had some detailled analysis, but they basically just go "omg huge marriage age gap" and "omg same actress for entire movie" and then start to hurl insult words. It's not cute. It sucks because to be honest I imagine when it's all said and done this will be the definitive Celine biopic, and these reviewers are not even taking it seriously from the start. mirage Posted July 19, 2021 at 10:09 PM Posted July 19, 2021 at 10:09 PM Funny to read all the reviews. I guess for non die hard fans this movie gives a great insight on how it all went, and what kind of person Celine is. I guess for us diehard fans who know every move it can go 2 ways, we will love it, or hate it. Quote

jpatdeleon09 Posted July 22, 2021 at 05:22 AM Posted July 22, 2021 at 05:22 AM (edited) Most reviews are positive. But most reviewers were more focused on the CGI effect to young Céline saying “Why not a child actress?..” LOL I think that’s the only part where some of these critics are too bothered with these effect. It’s a mixed of hate and love and shock for some critics In the end, it got a 5 minutes standing ovation and left them in tears. - That’s the most important it means it’s a masterpiece.
