I saw someone say it was incredibly insensitive for Irene to tell Celine that witnessing her having symptoms of her chronic illness was the most traumatic event of Irene's life. They were saying Irene was making Celine to feel like a burden (even if retroactively) after Celine's already so emotionally distraught about her SPS.

What a strange thing for them to say. I didn’t see it that way. It’s absolutely natural for humans to be traumatized by seeing other humans suffer.

They probably based that on Celine saying “I’m sorry” to Irene after that part of the interview, which she shouldn’t really be because she doesn’t have control over this disease and in no way she’s responsible for it (but we know she’ll still say sorry it because she is Celine, and she cares so much about other people, fans, etc.) 🥺

We should keep an eye out for the French interviews.

Maybe she will drop some Olympic hints. ;)

It's natural for Irene to have that reaction, but I can see how someone (especially someone from the chronic illness/disability community) would suggest that Irene didn't have to mention it to Celine. That said, it was a couple years after the fact and Irene did later qualify that it was nothing compared to what Celine went through...but I can understand the point about being as sensitive as possible. And about being careful not to centre your own emotions in front of the person who is suffering more.

Just food for thought.

That was just incredible.

She more or less confirmed Vegas herself at the end saying ‘I hope they come see me’ when Hoda asked what msg Andy’s she have for her fans 😆❤️

Loved when she sang How Did You Get Here

I'm wondering how she can manage to be on stage while explaining how unpredictable the disease is.

I'm also a bit uncomfortable with her return on stage while her manager is this AEG guy.

I'm wondering also which insurance will take the responsibility to insure her shows. I was reading an article few years ago about Stromae saying that after his cancellations for mental illness, no insurance company will take the risk to insure his shows.

Finally I'm wondering a lot about René. The guy she asked one thing to protect her so she could be able to sing all her life. What was his relation to this disease, symptoms ? Was it him approving those high doses of Valium to make her sing shows after shows ? Was it his response to make her sing all her life ? I'm being provocative. But no word from her about the manager and husband on that. Couldn't she be stopped and helped to find diagnosis way before ?

I wondered same thing but Hoda says after Rene and then Daniel died the symptoms got worse and then eventually in her anguish she turned to something else. Listen at this point of interview

I think before he got sick and then passed they were less frequent and mainly her voice. After when she just pushed so hard it got worse and she resorted to Valium. We can't know if he had not gotten cancer and died what difference that would have been. I want to believe as things progressed maybe not as fast that they together would have stopped. Especially when she started the Valium. I so wondered who if any of them knew how much she was taking.

Still worry about her pushing to hard to get back on stage.

Irene's choice of words was weird to me when said the most uncomfortable she had ever felt not the most traumatic. Uncomfortable just seemed like weird word choice.

Celine Dion My Story, My Dream

Very interesting interview. It's truly reflecting the "I Am Celine Dion" theme... not the youngest of 14 children, Rene's widow... but herself, her health and her voice.

I really loved seeing her talking about how she manages her instrument, she rarely talks about it. I'm reading lots of comments pointing out how could Rene allow this. As far as we know, it's a progressive illness, so probably she had just a few bad days from time to time before him passing away. Then... we know, she had to prove to her late husband and the world she's a strong woman. The rest is history. So sad for her.

I cannot help but thinking about the Hyde Park's performance, last time I saw her. Of course, while you're in the concert you don't realize how are her vocals, the excitement overcomes everything. But a few weeks ago, when the concert leaked online I was shocked at her vocal condition. However, now everything takes a whole other perspective. After Fashion Week in Paris, showing the world what a courageous woman she is, she had to do that concert, probably high on valiums.

BTW, I wonder when was the first concert she noticed the spasms. She stated that it was after a concert in Germany, but she did several shows in the country.

12 June 2008 Berlin Germany Waldbühne 13,153 / 14,000 $1,826,671 14 June 2008 Frankfurt Commerzbank-Arena 15,333 / 18,000 $2,206,722 16 June 2008 Stuttgart Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle 5,692 / 7,000 $1,274,927 18 June 2008 Cologne Lanxess Arena 9,657 / 10,000 $1,914,513 20 June 2008 Hamburg Color Line Arena 8,757 / 9,500 $2,023,846 22 June 2008 Munich Olympiastadion 17,015 / 20,000 $2,414,114 24 June 2008 Zürich Switzerland Hallenstadion 11,005 / 11,005 $2,246,343

I'm watching some performances from then to see if I can detect anything.

At the same time, I loved how her voice sounded during the interview: her singing voice but also her speaking voice. Not being goofy, or trying so hard to be cool faking an accent.

I'm amazed at how much she loves and needs the stage. In a way, it's comforting.

One last thing, I really appreciate Hoda's empathy, listening skills and kindness. She has also been promoting it everywhere with such a nice respect towards our girl.

Yeah I was confused when Celine said Germany. I was thinking of Arizona’s concert when she had that strange voice, very similar to the one she imitates during the interview.

A great interview indeed.

I was a little skeptical that maybe Hoda wasn’t the right person to do the first interview. Turns out she was the perfect match for Celine . You could tell Celine felt comfortable with her AND the personality match was just enough for Celine to feel comfortable with her without being “too”‘comfortable if that makes sense?

I think if somebody like Oprah did the interview… She has a tendency of taking over the interview and making “her” show.

I don’t study personality traits for a living so I have no professional insight but Celine seems to be inn her BEST mental health I’ve ever seen her in at least in public. Ironic. But THAT is the sliver lining of the disease for Celine, it’s evident.

Hoda did a great job, I loved that they had Irene Taylor included and also Celine’s doctor.

I think her singing voice sounds better now than most of the last years of her singing ( now we know why) so that’s a major improvement.

I loved when she sang “How Did You Get Here”…

I have no doubt she’ll be back onstage SOON, It’s all but confirmed now. I think she can totally do it safely by working closely with her doctor and team… she already put the disclaimer on it saying … basically that she’ll be back but at any time a cancellation is totally possible so come at your own risk. We will be there!

I loved how she clearly and sincerely missed us her fans. This was her best interview by far, it’ll be hard to top this.

Agreed. Steady and calm, and just letting her talk without too much interruption, but warm and friendly enough to not make the tone morose, not injecting herself into the convo. Really good interview.

It did make me chuckle a bit how their outfits were so twinsies lol. There was a docu before where Céline mentioned René would make her change her chosen outfit for interviews. I thought then 'how anal lol' Welp, this would've been one of those times a second option on standby would have been handy

Celine's doctor also updates the figure on SPS, saying latest studies show that the disease can hit no longer 1 in a million, but 1 to 2 in 100,000.

See the SPS thread, where we have this and more from Dr Piquet, including her saying Céline is “improved and overall making progress”.

This is what I like with Celine. She is very determined, a fighter, so positive in life, never say never, the show must go on. I love her!

OMG! The scene from the doc where she says, I'm a an apple tree and people are in line and I give them apples. The best and I shine them. I don't want them to wait in line if I don't have apples for them.

I know… that really struck me as well. And reminded me of how she said (in one of the books, I think) that she’s scared of being the flower that loses all its petals (in reference to being the youngest and one day losing people she loves.)

I think her "I'll crawl…" comment was meant to just point out how determined she is to return to the stage in SOME capacity. Not at all alluding to her returning in the form that we are used to.

I think she made it pretty clear that when she does come back, she wants to be the Céline Dion, the one that everyone knows and loves. And she is going to “hit those notes”, and she won’t be scared because she’ll be ready, and the fans won’t be worried.

While there's no timeline for her professional return, Dion says, "We're talking about putting a show together, and I have so many ideas. I can't wait."

Somehow it feels more likely that she will do The Olympics.

I just can't get my head around a whole new residency, even if it's just the weekends.

At this point I’m certain that her return will be in the form of a Vegas residency at first; with touring probably on the horizon, at a later date. To me, her talking about putting a show together suggests precisely that. And the way she tells Hoda that there may be some nights when they’re going to have to cancel if she’s not feeling well is a clear sign that it will not be a one night only thing, but rather a long-term schedule. Of course, it is possible that she may do the Olympics before that as the first performance, but that would be a bonus.

Merci

So Irene and her team called 911? :o

Well, Irene says that Céline’s team administered medication, which suggests that there was no outside medical team called in and so no 911 call at all.

Irene just said it to emphasize to the people watching the interview just how serious the episode was. She had probably told Céline before and this was really just for the purpose of the interview/documentary. I did not find her remark out of place.

Do you think Celine saw Irene’s documentary about trees? That tree metaphor came out of nowhere.

This would have been filmed before that film came out (which was Dec’23).
