guigafs15 Posted April 6, 2021 at 05:17 PM Posted April 6, 2021 at 05:17 PM "so that fans can connect" - that right there is one of the most damaging things that has happened to the entertainment industry since the rise of the internet. Fans now feel entitled to have a certain connection with their favorite stars. On Broadway, this has turned the "stage door" culture into a horribly toxic environment where insane, obsessed fans think that, because they're following Broadway actors and seeing posts from them, that those actors, in return, know who they are. I get that some artists want to post on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter/TikTok all the time. Celine is clearly not one of them. I would not expect that to change at any point. She's clearly got someone who handles her social media accounts and, whoever that is, also isn't into posting much. Celine has always been very protective of her "image" - or Rene was - and people's lives get ruined because of one tweet in this new digital age. Cher has recently had to apologize for a tweet she made regarding George Floyd - after doubling down on what she said in the first place. It was starting to negatively impact her. I can understand why neither Celine, nor her team, post things other than her picking apples or her fashion. I don't think anyone in here is asking Celine to be online 24/7. You're the only one saying this. You're exaggerating people's requests just to make your point, wich is a rather dishonesty way to do an argument. 2 Quote

They heard "record something from home" and immediately said "oh so you want Celine to risk her life and put her whole crew in a recording studio or in her home during a pandemic?!?" Cleary without realizing self-recording was an option on a cell phone or camera, or coordinating over the internet. Edited April 6, 2021 at 09:12 PM by PuraVida Quote
PuraVida Posted April 6, 2021 at 09:38 PM Posted April 6, 2021 at 09:38 PM This video makes me feel even better about being a Celine fan. Apparently Christina's loyal fans have really had a tough time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvH8t81ReH8 It goes into detail about how Christina hasn't promoted any of her new music in a long time. Her fans are desperate for her to connect with them in any way... but she just doesn't do it. There was one time when she did finally do a taped mini concert featuring a setlist of really great songs from her albums, but it was never posted on her any of her social media... because it wasn't actually for her fans. It was for an insurance company! I think Christina and Celine are in the same category in terms of fans wanting more. It just goes to show that it's not just "Celine obsessives" who crave this kind of thing, but rather fans of many artists who want to connect with their favorite artists. I think the main difference for us is that Celine is much more famous and also has a French career, so we can get a bit more....but Christina has released 8 albums since her debut in 1999 in English. Over that time, Celine did 6 albums in English. Quote
rfkavanagh Posted April 6, 2021 at 09:47 PM Posted April 6, 2021 at 09:47 PM The fact that so many of you don't see how unreasonable you're being is the very definition of entitlement culture. Sure, many people would like to see more of the artists they like, but there's a line that's crossed and a negative tonal shift when it turns into demands and blaming the artist and their team because they're not doing what you want. Might it be easy for them to do something? Sure! And I'd probably enjoy seeing some of those things, too! But they don't owe you or me anything, and Céline and her team - for whatever reason - have shown time and again that they're just not interested in doing many of things you'd like to see. It's not wrong to wish they thought differently; it is wrong to berate them constantly for not doing so and feeling that they're breaking some sacred artist-fan contract in this social media-driven world. There is no agreement. And honestly, it's a bit weird seeing so many (I assume) grown adults acting as if they're unable to cope with life without a constant drip-feed of content, presence and validation from an artist they like. It's a slippery slope - and not a far one - from that kind of mentality to doxxing, stalkers, toxic fandom, etc. I really don't mean to insult anyone or try to make anyone feel bad, but so many threads in this forum turn into a never-ending series of posts complaining that Céline and her team should be doing more because fans deserve it and because it would be so easy and because you want it and because it's unfair and because they have so much content in the archives, etc., etc. And for the record, I also believe they could do a much better job with managing Céline's presence/image/legacy overall (although I'm purely focused on the music - I couldn't care less about learning more about her life or children, etc.). But just because it would be easy for her or her team to do something doesn't mean you're entitled to have them do it. 5 Quote

Also when Xtina started, Celine had almost 20 years in the music business and almost 10 years of an English career. So how can these 2 artists be compared at the timeframe you're using? It would be a more fair comparison if you had counted how many albums Xtina has released after being 10 years in the business, so after 2009, and that number is 3 apparently. Celine's number after 2010 is 4 and that after being already 3 decades in. Plus the amount of shows each woman has done differs by far. Celine never took so much time off as Xtina (or most other artists). And i'm not shading Xtina or something, but i did watch the video that was posted and i read the comments below, i get their frustration just like i get our frustration and i want more from Celine as well. But reading comments comparing Celine to Xtina and what they did/do for their fans doesn't make much sense. Celine has given so so much more when it comes to albums, shows, interviews, specials, documentaries, even fan interaction, that it's kinda ungrateful to say that their fans are in the same category just because after 3-4 decades Celine slowed down so much. We do want more but we have had way much more. 4 Quote

Without getting drawn into a futile back-and-forth, let me just point out some factual inaccuracies in your response: I gave my opinion, which as you point out, we are all entitled to do. At no point did I say or even imply that my opinion was the only valid one or that other people with different opinions should not be allowed to share those, too. It's another hallmark of toxic online culture to have people interpret a contrasting opinion as trying to shut down dissent. At no point in my post did I call anyone a child. In fact, I specifically noted that I assume everyone here is a grown adult. That's why I find the behavior so bizarre and off-putting. Again, my opinion. I did not say anything about Céline and/or her team being perfect (technically, you didn't overtly accuse me of doing so, but the implication is there, although it's possible I'm misinterpreting). In fact, I specifically noted that I think she and her team could be doing a much better job of handling her legacy. It's hardly cultural elitism to note when you see negative and unhealthy behavior. Cultural elitism would be, for example, if I were to judge people and look down on them for liking Céline and her music, believing it to be somehow lesser or beneath me. Which is not something I said or implied at all. Everyone should be free to enjoy whatever they like without judgment. Again, I would be happy if Céline and her team were more active and doing more regarding her career and legacy. It's the cultural shift from fans desiring and hoping for more into the constant demands and belief that artists are being unreasonable or have an obligation to do/share more that I'm calling out. Artists and their teams have no obligation to you or me to do anything they don't want to do, regardless of their reasons or how easy it would be for them to do. 1 Quote

When you said that you "assumed everyone is an adult" you implied that the behavior you're judging are not one you expect from an adult, in other words, it's a childish behavior. When you put yourself in a position where you decide what's a reasonable adult behavior and, go to the point of saying that people are too ignorant to even realize they are unreasonable, you putting yourself on top of everybody else, pushing your "opinion" as a fact. That's not an opinion, that's a judgment. You should, at least, be brave enough to own your words. Or, as you tried to excuse, if it wasn't your intention to offend or put yourself as superior, you should organize your words better. As for your cultural elitism, judge people's opinions about a element of culture while seeing yourself and your own opinions as superior, is as much a good example as the one you gave. Again, be better! This is a forum, no one is forcing Celine to nothing, and they should be able to share their feelings and desires in a forum without being judge by you. Most of the comments I've posted on this forum over the years have tooted Celine's horn and sung her praises. I didn't realize how personal some of these topics were getting for some members. It's never my intention to hurt feelings or make people feel alienated. Like a lot of fans, my frustration over the past couple of years falls solely onto Celine's team. My personal hope is simply for Team Celine to step up their game a bit when it comes to promo. Do I feel entitled to them stepping up their game? Not at all. When it comes to Celine herself, I feel she has done more than enough throughout her career as far as creative output and fan interaction.I also understand not all fans feel like Team Celine is doing a bad job or they just don't want to talk about it, which I totally respect. That Christina video was just an interesting watch and a reminder that lots of fan groups of any big artists end up in similar boats from time to time... where they feel some distance from their favorite artist for whatever the reason might be. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers by sharing that video here. Oops! While Celine is on a break and there's not much to talk about... I know it feels like people here end up complaining more than praising and celebrating. But I've always enjoyed people here who brainstorm good ideas that Celine's team could potentially implement. Do you think if Celine only spoke one language she would put out 27 albums? And you have to compare them from even starting points. And the percentage of Celine fans that listen to her music in both languages is a vast minority. Using a similar time frame, they have the same amount. Xtina released 6 albums of new English albums in her first 10.5 years in the business...1999 - 2010. Celine released 6 English albums over the same first 10.5 years of her career 1990 - 2001. And yes, the fair comparison is to compare them by the fan base they cater to in each language. As I said, the fan bases are almost entirely separate between Celine's French and English career. Anyway, the entire point of bringing up Christina is to show the bitter people who call Celine fans "entitled" is to show that by their logic they also call Christina fans "entitled" .... seems like it's actually a problem with them and not people who are fans of artists. Like I said before, technically no human being has an objective obligation to any other human on the planet. But imagine if that's how we organized our societies and our planet. Does Celine have a financial incentive to give more to fans? Actually, yes she would gain money. Will she go broke if she doesn't? No. Is merely hoping that Celine, over a year into a pandemic, interacted with fans more or gave some small performance here and there...which could be done relatively free of cost and safely an example of entitlement? No. You yourself said it could be done easier, so why shouldn't we at least be somewhat emotional about a loss we feel. If one sees someone on a red carpet who's dressed horribly, is it one's entitlement to have them dressed better? No. But the "Fashion Police" and the Red Carpet reviewers are very free to say "oh bless them, they're not doing a good job" or "omg, what an ugly dress" ..... Celine's team is free to do what they want and we as fans are free to judge. And the "tonal shift" in "so many threads" is exactly why this thread was created---to centralize a place of suggestions for improvements and critique. garyhollander Posted April 10, 2021 at 09:36 AM Posted April 10, 2021 at 09:36 AM By that logic you could also argue that she released so many great albums, won so many awards and performed thousands of amazing shows around the world for several decades, so she could retire now and never sing again. Would you be okay with that? I wouldn’t. You can’t possibly deny the fact that she’s not doing the things that you would except an artist, especially one of her caliber, to do. Look at all these other superstar singers, many of whom have also released 20 songs sometime in the past two years yet still continue to be very active and do stuff for their fans because that’s what huge artists are expected and supposed to do. It’s their job after all. That’s also what Céline would have been doing had she still been under the management of Aldo or, even better, René. As long as she’s still considered an “active” artist and not a retired one, complaints are totally justified. I can actually cause onlike some morons here I appreciate her music and talent and she is my idol... But she is also a person I wonder how you would feel after working your whole life very hard to have someone else tell you sorry you cant retire because im just so selfish and needy that i need you to continue to work..look at what your saying take a good look and if you dont think there is anything wrong in what you are saying than i would make an appointment to have that checked... Offcourse i also want her music and new music for ever and ever but i cant forse her or be dissapointed in her if she decides to take some time for herself have a freaking sabatical and enjoy lifee... She is called a singer not a marketeer nor management and maybe she is doen with her obligations.. she delivered a freaking 20 song album deal with it its the music your supposed to enjoy the glory days she had are over enjoy what she brings out and done. 1 Quote
garyhollander Posted April 10, 2021 at 09:42 AM Posted April 10, 2021 at 09:42 AM Annie Lennox has stayed quarantined in her house in LA for basically a whole year, and her Instagram is amazing. The stuff she puts out is a treasure, all from her piano in her living room with an iPhone and her voice. She even just posted old performances she randomly found. Even just sharing her quarantine playlist would be great. It would be different if Celine never sang around the house (like Streisand), but we know Celine cannot stop herself from singing. I just think she has no people around her who know anything about social media. But the people who are hired to do things could literally dig in the archives and post old footage, rare stuff....but they don't. Who knows what goes on in their brains? And, she could at least engage with certain social media stories online to keep her in the public eye---she gets brought up all the time! rfkavanagh Posted April 10, 2021 at 11:22 PM Posted April 10, 2021 at 11:22 PM When you said that you "assumed everyone is an adult" you implied that the behavior you're judging are not one you expect from an adult, in other words, it's a childish behavior. I stand by everything I said, and yes, I absolutely do think the behavior is childish and immature. We'll never agree on this, nor your condescension (while accusing me of the same!), so there's no need to continue this conversation. Feel free to respond if you must; I'll just agree to disagree and move on. Quote
