Céline themed movies: "Aline/The Voice Of Love" and "Celine before Celine"

I've seen it. Finally! It was the weirdest experience watching that movie about Celine that is not actually about Celine but still it is her without being her

Of course, being a die-hard fan and seeing the movie will not be the same experience than just knowing Celine through her songs and some of the main events in her life. As it's been established before by Valerie, she took some liberties that fans will definitely notice but what needs to be pointed out is that she really stays true to Celine in spite of those changes. And as a movie, it is GOOD. I had some good laughs watching it, and not because it was caricatural, but because of the many humorous situations I could easily imagine being true.

I had a great time overall, especially during the first half of the movie, with the story of Aline becoming a star, falling in love with Guy Claude, and the marriage. The second half was good but everything was a little rushed I guess as they still had so many years/events to cover to get to René's death, sorry, Guy Claude's.

I will now be going into details, so major **SPOILERS** below:

The movie opens with Ordinaire (the male version) and debuts with young Anglomar and Sylvette finding each other and building a family of 13 children.

During her unexpected pregnancy with #14 we can see the video of Christophe singing on television and that's when Sylvette chooses Aline's name.

We quickly see her as a 5 years old, watching her family singing altogether at a local event. The shot after that is Aline's first performance at a wedding. I have to say that special effects are really well done even though it sure looked weird on the 5 years old Aline, it looked pretty good for the older Alines.

Then comes the meeting with Guy Claude, and the beginning of Aline's career. I really enjoyed watching that part. While they're in a plane to Paris, one of the flight attendants answers "3 hours and 20 minutes" to someone asking "how long til landing?". I know YOU'll get it.

The romance between Aline and Guy Claude takes a new turn when she gets her relooking for the Incognito era. The scene when he discovers Aline is very funny, with a slow mo of Celine opening the door and moving her hair à la L'Oreal.

Sylvette eventually finds out about Aline falling in love with her manager when she finds a picture of him in her bed and Immediately talks about it with her. Only after that she goes to GC and tell him he's betrayed her. The scene is really great with Sylvette threatening him to break his neck like she does with poultry if he doesn't stay away from her little princess! The actress playing Sylvette was my favorite.

As we all know they finally decide to live their love tohether after she wins the Eurovision contest in Switzerland.

Here's one of the biggest changes, PQTME is played at the time where Aline is interviewed and can't reveal the identity of her boyfriend (reference to Lise Payette in 1992).

One of my favorite scene was the proposal. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think we never knew how René proposed to Celine ? Here, it happens while they're on tour and take a day off with their team in Naples to enjoy some gelato. GC has the ring hidden in Aline's ice cream. It is very moving when she finds the ring and starts screaming "I'm gonna get married! I'm gonna get married!" then jumps in his arms, revealing their love to the world.

The wedding part is also really moving as we see Aline getting ready at her parents' house and they all sing to her before she leaves. The song is "Mille après mille" by Gerry Joly, a song Celine once sang with Fred Pellerin in 2012.

After that, GC's health problems are introduced when Celine tells a funny anecdote during a TV show with Carine (Julie Snyder) about finding her husband lying on the floor of their hotel room and struggling to transport him on a luggage cart she finds in a corridor.

The struggles part continues, first with Aline breaking her voice during a performance of ABM at a concert, then the struggle to have a child...

There's no mention of the break Celine and René took to have their first child though. Aline finds out she's 3 months pregnant while she's eating fries and GC's eating carrot soup. So she draws "BB" in GC's soup and that's how she announces the pregnancy.

We quickly arrive in Vegas with Aline performing every night and Junior (René-Charles) waiting every night by the bathroom window for his mom to return. When you know how elaborated the show was, of course the stage they used in the movie looks very cheap. It looks better when they use a stadium environment.

The following events happen very fast : Aline's father dies, the first run of the Vegas shows comes to an end, they go on tour, Junior goes to a concert for the first time, then she's pregnant with twins, and the second run in Vegas begins. Aline's exhausted, rehearsing, singing, breastfeeding, barely sleeping, but the show must go on.

Guy Claude gets very sick and must watch Aline perform from their home while he's slowly losing his battle with illness. When he dies, Aline thinks she can't find the strength to carry on and one night she asks her makeup artist to sleep at his appartement so she doesn't have to stay home alone. When she wakes up, she goes for a walk in sin city and can't be found when it's almost showtime. They all think of cancelling the show, but the next shot shows an empty bench where Aline was sitting earlier, leading us to believe she came back to perform.

The movie closes with Aline singing Ordinaire (Celine's version).

For you, is the running time of the movie enough? :)

Maybe we can have an alternate shots. Different from theaters to the DVDs or the running time will be much longer than in the theater's version

2 hours is a good length. The second half was a bit rushed but you have to admit that the Vegas years were quite repetitive so they didn't need to elaborate too much about that.

Nonetheless, they could have developed more the illness of René, with Celine taking care of him at home I think. It's something they don't show at all in the movie and we know it lasted for months.

Ordinaire as the ending song of the movie. I don't even like how they recorded Céline's vocals on that song. She's like singing in a can.

Anyways, I can't wait to watch it :)

Any way you could use the Spoiler tag? I didn’t read the spoiler in ANewDay’s post above yours, but you kinda defeated the purpose of them using a spoiler tag in the first place :-D

We do know how René proposed to Céline. She said they were eating in a hotel room and René kept fiddling with the lights, wanting everything to be perfect. He then took out the box with the ring and started looking at it without showing it to Céline and crying.

And Valérie specifically said she made this scene up. One of the reasons she changed all the names - she didn’t want to get called out by fans for veering away from reality.

All seems to indicate this movie will be a blockbuster in the French markets. Reviews are very positive and they are promoting it a lot. Also the lack of major Hollywood releases could play in its favor. But I hope they also push it in other European markets, it could also do good in Germany I think.

With No U.S. Blockbusters in Sight, French Cinemas Stay Afloat With a Rich Local Offering

After an underwhelming start to the year, France has redeemed its status as Europe’s largest nation of cinemagoers, with the national box office bolstered by a tide of local movies that have sustained admissions despite the near absence of big Hollywood movies.

So far, 2020 has been a banner year for French fare, and local distributors — who were initially reluctant to release movies when theaters reopened in June after a three-month shutdown — have taken note. Upon news of Universal’s postponement of James Bond film “No Time to Die” to next spring, Gaumont immediately scheduled in the freshly vacant Nov. 11 Bond slot “Aline” (pictured), Valerie Lemercier’s anticipated movie about Celine Dion. Gaumont will give “Aline” a wide release, treating it as a French blockbuster.

Among the French and European sleeper hits that have been driving the box office are family movies like “Les blagues de Toto,” “Bigfoot Superstar,” French comedies “How to be a Good Wife,” “Le Divorce Club,” “Delete History,” “Mama Weed,” “My Cousin,” “My Donkey, My Lover & I,” and indies like “Mr Jones” and “The Monopoly of Violence.”

The early months of 2020, however, were rough for the French theatrical market. “France’s box office had a very bad start this year; we were down 25% when all other countries — save Mexico — were up during the first quarter,” said Eric Marti of Comscore. That explains why, over the first nine months of 2020, cinema admissions were down 62% in France, on par with Germany and Italy (-60%) and Spain (-67%) which had a strong first quarter, but is now struggling, in contrast to France where the restart, when it came in July and August, was strong. Countries where B.O. took the biggest hit this year include the U.K. (-70%) and Brazil (-72%).

One of the key factors behind the upward trend in French releases is the incentive launched by France’s National Film Board (CNC) in late June to encourage local distributors and producers to release their films. The scheme was initially in place until the end of August and was recently extended to the end of the year. Local exhibitors are also protected by a pair of newly-launched funds: one of €50 million ($58.8 million) which covers box office losses, and another of €34.3 million ($40.3 million) aimed at helping theaters stay afloat.

“It’s clearly not ‘la vie en rose’ right now, but it’s okay,” said Nathanael Karmitz, CEO of MK2, a leading arthouse cinema chain in Paris. “We’re missing the market share that American movies usually take up, but the rest of the offer, French and foreign cinema titles, are performing well,” said Karmitz.

In 2019, France’s top 10 films comprised 7 American movies and only 2 French movies. In contrast, there are so far 6 French movies in the top 10 for 2020, and as many as 14 local films in the top 25, said Marti. As of Oct. 8, the box office is dominated by “Tenet,” “1917” and “Sonic The Hedgehog,” the only American movies in the top 10.

Karmitz said France was less impacted than other countries like Spain, where MK2 also operates a cinema chain, due to the strength of local movies. “This COVID-19 crisis has raised questions about our dependence on American movies and the place of European movies in our culture,” said Karmitz.

“Exhibitors who have been focusing on Hollywood movies are rightfully feeling betrayed by the studios — and the studios are shooting themselves in the foot with a short-term vision that’s weakening the exhibition sector,” said Karmitz. Admissions across MK2’s 12 cinemas are down 36% compared with 2019 levels, said the executive.

Meanwhile, Jocelyn Bouyssy, CEO of CGR Cinemas, France’s second biggest theater chain, said the dearth of U.S. blockbusters has had a disastrous impact on admissions, which have been down between 50% and 60% every week since reopening.

“We’re taking hits in the head every day with U.S. studios, and the postponing of [‘No Time to Die’] was a very big blow to our morale,” said Bouyssy, adding that although he’s not planning on closing down theaters, he has frozen ongoing investments. “We were in the process of investing in new venues and updating our equipment, but we have stopped all of that for now,” he said.

With no U.S. blockbusters coming up, Bouyssy said CGR intends to “turn the spotlight on the raft of good French movies coming up.”

Besides “Aline,” other hot new domestic titles include Albert Dupontel’s “Dieu les cons” and Quentin Dupieux’s “Mandibules,” as well as Maiwenn’s “DNA.”

Last, was there an emotional moment in the film like really made you cry?

I remember a film about Judy Garland played by Renée Zellweger, that film made my cry especially the end part.

Interviewed by Nice Matin, Valérie Lemercier explained that Celine Dion did not give her opinion on the film which will soon be released in the cinema and which evokes her family, sentimental life and her career.

On November 11, 2020, Valérie Lemercier will star in the film Aline , which she directed and in which she plays Celine Dion . The opportunity for the actress to grant an interview to Nice Matin . With our colleagues, the emblematic figure of Petit Nicolas revealed that the Quebec singer has not given her opinion on the dramatic comedy of which she is the subject.

"I didn't want to talk to her about it before writing it, since I didn't know what I was going to do. Her entourage read the script, she didn't want to read it", explains Valérie Lemercier. by specifying that she relied on public statements, as well as on the behavior of the star, to be as close as possible to reality. "It's a screenplay that we wrote after having read tons of books, seen thousands of hours of broadcast. Celine has opened her heart so much to everyone, she's like an open book," he says. she. If the 56-year-old actress has set her sights on Celine Dion, it is in particular because she appreciates "her transparency, her history, her family" , that

A casting straight from Quebec

In addition, Valérie Lemercier "appreciates it since the album she made in 1995 with Goldman, 'D'eux'", but not only. "Four years ago, I saw his first steps without René [the Canadian artistic agent died on January 14, 2016 at the age of 73, Editor's note], it touched me a lot", explains the filmmaker , who enchanted his producer with his new project. For a rendering that is larger than life, she selected actors mainly from Quebec. In the end, she was the only French woman with the makeup artist on the film set. "For me, it was impossible to cheat, to pass off a Frenchman for a Quebecer, I myself had a terrible time!" , she says.

To me, Valérie doesn’t look like Céline at all. She’s more of a combination between Carole King and Jennifer Aniston. Edited by Céline RO

I would say a combination between Julie Schneider and RuPaul (sorry Valérie, only because you are tall). Edited by Xpresso

I don't know. I think they'll keep the same name for non-French markets. Also a title like TPOL might cost a pretty penny

Hm, interesting, that's a day off from what was previously announced, but still, it seems this site has had international release dates before they're made public elsewhere (they got Quebec and Netherands about a month ago, and now also Portugal is showing as 7/1 and previously-announced Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland on 18/11. And, if they're releasing this in Portugal, where if I'm not mistaken Celine never performed, it's certainly going to other markets.)

Also, interesting to have confirmation of The Voice of Love. When I first saw this in the Gaumont 30/6/2020 press release I was hoping it's a typo, but alas, seems not.

I wonder if the French release is going to go on as planned on 11/11, since I understand France just announced a now nightly curfew in Paris and a number of other major cities that is to stay in place for 6 weeks and is threatening to put releases on ice....hard to put out an expensive movie under these COVID circumstances!

According to this interview with Valerie, they’re going to try to keep the 11/11 release date despite the curfew. It’s definitely going to hurt them though. Just so unfortunate.

Bad timing. She says they will try to keep the 8 pm start time even if the curfew is 9 pm (and it lasts 2 hours). I wonder if they will really be able to do that.

With the curfew, the premiere in Boulogne is now on Saturday at 5pm with Valérie Lemercier (and I can no longer go). And Grand Rex on nov 8th at 4pm (I think it always was scheduled at that hour, I can't go either).

Also, my friend said that now with the curfew he feels depressed and all he wants to do is go back to see Aline and that it was a feel-good movie.

With a 2-hour long movie, they would have to start at 6.30pm so that everyone has a chance to be back home at 9.00pm... Thankfully not everyone has a curfew (for now...) but this really is a bummer.

I really want to see the movie again!

Can you imagine if they'd dub this movie in English (I hope they won't)?

Finding someone to do Celine's accent when she speaks English wouldn't be that simple. :D
