What you call clever, I'd call it "opportunism".

Beyonce is precisely (almost) everything I despise in this society : giving credits to someone who doesn't deserve it.

Of course, she is talented, I don't deny it but she has created her own legend. I mean: she has "bought" it.

She managed to reach the icon status she wanted to ( back then she clearly stated she wanted to be a legend) and made people think she is behind all this. But she's not. She is so powerful in the music industry ( and even more with her relationship with Jay-Z) that she can do whatever she wants to. Even her fans agree with that and she is mocked all around the web for being credited for songs she didn't write or paying for her awards... (just to name a few things).

She got all the "values" I don't like. But she can do whatever she wants , she hasn't got a song that passed the test of time for a long time. She won't be remembered for her music.

Sorry for being off topic.

Uh oh... don't let the "Beyhive" see this. :giggle:

Say what you want about Beyoncé, but I saw her in concert years ago (her first major tour after Destiny's Child), and her talent is undeniable. Also, she's definitely pushed artistic boundaries - dropping 2 critically-acclaimed visual albums basically out of nowhere - a marketing home run.

I wish Céline's team would take a class or two at the Beyoncé school of business, and take some calculated risks for the release/promo of the new English album.

The Reggae Community's Heart Will Always Go On for Celine Dion

by Dale Eisinger

Aug 27 2016 8:45 AM

When Celine Dion played a one-off show in Jamaica in 2012, the concert broke attendance records and traffic near the venue slowed to a crawl. To those in the dancehall and reggae scene, this mass enthusiasm over the late-90s chanteuse is far from surprising.

French Canadian pop star Celine Dion has sold over 200 million soft rock/adult contemporary albums. Her new album, Encore un soir, debuts this week, and she sings all 15 cuts in French. Fans expect the record to play across Jamaica and the Caribbean, where she has become a fixture in dancehall clubs—many Jamaican artists listen to Dion's songs, cover her music, and remix her love ballads into dancehall anthems, as was discussed on MTV's Speed Dial podcast.

"f*** the Pope," says a source connected to dancehall, who asked to remain anonymous. "If you want to shut down Kingston, bring in Celine Dion."

Dion traveled to Jamaica for a one-off performance in 2012, headlining the Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose stadium, which is near Montego Bay. She was briefly taking time off her Caesar's Palace Hotel and Casino residency, where she has sold more tickets than "Elvis, Liberace, and the Rat Pack combined," according to Newsweek. Her concert broke attendance records, and traffic was even affected: The typically half-hour drive from Montego Bay to the stadium reportedly took two hours, according to the newspaper the Jamaica Gleaner.

Rose Marjorie Hosang, 70, a retired registered nurse from Jamaica, was at the concert. "Even I was amazed at the response of the Jamaicans to her," she says. "It took people three or four hours to get a few miles. She was just so down-to-earth... She was very, very humble, and so the people just embrace[d] her. Even she didn't realize people loved her so much."

Dancehall DJs played Dion's music at clubs and parties as early as her early 1990s "Power of Love" days. Like many songs of the genre, Dion's music consists of laid-back tempos, rich harmonies, and a spirit of unity and love. Her work is perfect for a dancehall setting because a large segment of the music programming leans on slow jams to contrast the heavier dance songs.

"Back in that era, you'd have 30 minutes of soul music, and that meant some Celine Dion," says Bobby Konders, a Hot 97 DJ and a member of Massive B sound system, a group of dancehall DJs and MCs. He recalls DJs playing Dion's "Mama" and "If Walls Could Talk" in the 90s.

"We had her stuff on white label. That's when vinyl was playing and it even got bootlegged on 45," Konders recalls. "If the crowd were the hardcore Jamaican crowd, they were into the music."

In the 1990s, Pam Hall covered Dion. Even Vybz Kartel—one of the hardest dancehall artists out there, known for

"I'm Alive." The track very much lifts Dion's vocal. "Dancehall is often about gun violence or crime or blackness," Stephen Chin, 55, a Jamaican-born photographer living in New York, says. "She is like an antidote to that. Jamaicans love them sappy songs."

Ghost, a dancehall legend who has toured with Shabba Ranks and

with Beenie Man, also covered "My Heart Will Go On" on a
called Just Ragga. Once Ghost adds upbeat guitars and pan flutes, "My Heart Will Go On" becomes a reggae song, sounding more like an original dance song than a cover.

Dion's songs are poised for remixing because her melodies are so rhythmic; they can twist around any music. In addition, her tempos are also slow enough for a double-time shuffle to sound effortless on top. These covers, though, lack reggae's socio-political aspect, sounding more like rocksteady music from the mid-to-late 60s. A lot of the 1960s songs borrowed heavily from American soul lyrics, lending them romance.

"My memory of her influence was when erotic dancers came to Jamaica, by boat, to work at an exclusive club," says Clive McLean, 37, a Jamaican-born English teacher now living in Japan. "Two of the seven of them danced only to Celine Dion music. One was so pleasantly surprised that I could sing along to the music that she came off the pole and gave me a kiss on the cheek."

Dion remains popular in dancehall circles and Jamaica, but dancehall has changed. When he DJs today, Konder says half the music comes from American musicians, many of whom aren't even playing reggae. "I played out last night and they called it 'Reggae Tuesday,'" he says. "In two hours I played only one hour of reggae." Nothing should surprise audiences in 2016—even a backbeat shuffle over "My Heart Will Go On."

What the heck is this song "Mama" referenced in the article? LOL

I thought they may refer to Goodbye (the saddest word) as the song begins with

"

Mamma

You gave life to me

Turned a baby into a lady

And mamma

All you had to offer

Was the promise of a lifetime of love"

Lucky you.

Today I tried to put the booklet back inside the paper sleeve of my copy. Impossible -_-

I already see a vynil-single with this title too and it's Goodbye's the saddest word

I thought "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)," too. However, the paragraph states that and "If Walls Could Talk" were played in the 90s. As "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)" was not released in the 90s, that is what confused me.

This album has great songs, but I am afraid that it hasn't click on me after a week.

You can throw the stones...

A great effort, but easily forgettable

And I still love her, I just think feel is something missing ...

Sorry guys :(... I wish I love it more

I think "l'etoile" will be the next single if we judge from its position in the album (Le Miracle and Immensite were the second singles and both were tracks no2) and the fact that it is recorded for a show.

I hope it will be! :innocent:

but it hasn't been recorded for any show so far... It was LYAC

Lol yeah but normally the 1st single is the 1st song on the album and now that isn't the case (for the first time since quite a while)..

TVEC stands for "Tout va être correct," meaning "Everything will be okay." The acronym became important in Celine's life when the letters first appeared on balloons celebrating when Rene beat cancer the first time in 1999.

Oh. Thank you. :) I remember the picture, but I never would have caught that.

Overall, I think this album is a step in the right direction.

I would say that the up-tempos are better than the ballads - never thought that would happen. :hmm:

I was waiting for that one EPIC love song (Rene's tribute song), but I know her french music. :confused1:

Encore un soir (single) is nice, but falls a little flat for me.

The album balances new-Celine and old-Celine, something they've try to do since the 2000s.

I just wish they would push harder in new directions, instead of just "dipping their toes" in it. :horse:

It's the most contemporary & relevant album she's released in a while.

I am particularly blown away by Zaho's contributions, which I find to be quite fresh and interesting. :punk:

I've also taken a liking to Zaho's own music - I think she can do some Goldman type things for Celine. :yahoo:

As usual, promotion leaves a lot to be desired.

They had the buzz with the tour but they never fully capitalized on it.

She should have sang more songs on the tour and released the EUS video already. We should be on the second single and video by now. :blargwave:

I pray that they reinvent the wheel for the English album.

I'm talking some dance tracks and contemporary ballads. :rockinbanana:

I think she needs to work with some DJs, Sia, Bruno Mars and ZAHO (seriously go check her music out) :headphone:

My top 5:

5) Les yeux au ciel

4) Tu sauras

3) L'étoile

2) A vous (this needs to be done live) :mdr: :dance3:

1) Ma faille :w00t: :thankspin: :bounce8:

I'm curious, is there a Canadian version of the vinyls? I purchased my LP from Amazon.ca, but the sleeve says "Made in the EU" and "sonymusic.fr."

I think she needs to understand that making videos is necessary, even more than live promo.

Is it?

I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about this EUS video, or lack thereof as the case may be.

It's not like her videos are generally anything worth writing home about, with few notable exceptions (I'm looking at you, IACBTMN!)

But for the most part, it's pretty dire "acting" and melodramatic close-ups. And judging by the brief clip of this EUS video, we're probably getting more of the same. And if that's the case, I don't think it'll be of much help. The only audience watching it would be the already-converted faithful fans. If they actually want it to appeal to a broader audience, they'd need to do something truly memorable and creative. Otherwise you're just preaching to the choir.

I for one think the EUS lyric video is perfectly sufficient.

You have to understand that without this video... there's not that much to complain about now. ..

So people are complaining because the video is still unreleased. .. so that they can complain even more once it's out because it sucks.

IMO it's way too late to release it now. If there is a full video at all, it should have been released weeks ago

That's my bottom 5.

Skippy-skip-skip (well, I do love L'etoile until it hits the chorus and the vocals on LYAC)

Goes to show how right that Toronto Star review was...somebody at the label decided to hit every radio format with this thing! :giggle:

For the next time I'll say : "Making good videos"... I think it is the only way to keep her on top...

We all know how good our girl is, but some of us also want her to be recognized and popular...

Being an artist is about merchadising your image, and that is what I am talking about.

I think she has everything to be on the top of chats, but part of her team is not working in the right direction since more than a decade...

I'd rather she be off the charts and be herself, than forcibly trying to get there by being something she's not.

And that's what some of this new album sounds like to me... just not buying it. Some great stuff, yes. But some really lacks authenticity.

Some people doesn't seem to understand that there's no position above no1😅😅

Céline has just broKen a record...She is still no1 but reading some fans it's like she's flopping because there's no promo.

Funny.
