Popular Post Taking Chances Posted November 28, 2019 at 12:45 PM Popular Post Posted November 28, 2019 at 12:45 PM (edited) Jav got banned, because of some people here thought that he doesn't fit to their positivity-utopia with his messages. He may write only with prior notice. This is fascism, in my opinion. Are you happy, dear Unicorn-fans? It's ridicules that he's been banned. But now this week is over and it seems that the album will end up a huge flop. You are aware that selling one million albums worldwide is now a normal standard, right? With all the touring she will probably sell that much. What if she had debuted at #10 and remained in the Top 40 until Christmas due to sales being spread over a month, that wouldn't make it flop? scielle Posted November 28, 2019 at 01:41 PM Posted November 28, 2019 at 01:41 PM SoundScan (Billboard) update as of end-of-day Tuesday: #80, with 5.8k album equivalents. It's #17 on pure album sales (4.3k), but drops all the way down once streaming is factored in. For context, if you think of what it takes to make up for 1 album sale by streaming: 3,750 streams x 3 min (assuming a 3-minute song) = 11,250 minutes of streaming / 60 = 187.5 hours / 24 = 7.8 days So 7.8 days of full-time, 24/7 streaming to make up 1 album sale. Who has the time in their day to stream this obsessively? 15-year-olds! That's for free / ad-supported platforms (audio or video). For subscriptions, it's 1,250 x 3 = 3,750 min / 60 = 62.5 hours / 24 = 2.6 days That's the reality of what we're up against. 3 Quote

scielle Posted November 28, 2019 at 02:17 PM Posted November 28, 2019 at 02:17 PM For reference, the top streamer so far this week (Trippie Red) is at 85mln streams, the 2nd (Post Molone) is at 50mln (Fri-Tue).Over the same period, Celine is at 1.2m. There's no question Celine, like most veteran acts, has a streaming problem. But it's not just that - she's getting out-streamed by many other veteran acts. Acts that haven't recorded or even have been dead for years. (Granted, right now streaming charts are skewed by Christmas classics from decades ago). She'll never compete with the hip-hop kids, but its not like her genre is dead on arrival, either. The music itself is not dissimilar to some mixture of Sia / Adele / Ed Sheeran / Sam Smith / etc. and all of these do just fine in streaming. And Celine really should be doing better. 5 Quote

So other veteran artists do better than here, now that's a problem. I have no doubt that if an AND was a new hit it would have some amazing streaming numbersand it doesn't need to sound like this, it has to have this big spark. To my own opinion, the new songs don't have that "spark", that makes that it will be played in one's head over and overagain, but most over, my soul doesn't have this deep connection it had (right away) with songs like CTM and others. And she doesn't need to kill her voice in order to create those magical moments with her music, for me, it's about the way she delivers it. If Sony would have really believed in her, I believe they will "go to war" and make anything in order to get those streaming numbers up. But now with streaming she drops to #80. The ticket bundle makes more sense than this streaming in charts! I wish more countries would still use sales only (digital and physical). In this case, nobody would use the word flop (which only applies to streaming by the way). Quote

She's just too private even when she always claims she's an open book. Yeah, I always felt that way. She's very open about a select few things, but very private otherwise. As she has every right to be and I absolutely get it. And yes, I think part of it is having a constant, active, authentic social media presence. Part of it is interacting with other artists and fans - features, more so than duets per se, responding to people on social media, etc. Part of it is videos - even ones as simple as Courage and Imperfections had a substantial uplift on those songs.Team Celine is moving in the right direction, and Sony definitely tried hard this time around - Spotify and Amazon billboards, Alexa convos - but it's a slow and hard uphill climb. Streaming is about volumes, and her demo is just not there. Plus even if they are, they have decades worth of music they like to spread across their playlists, they don't listen to the same 5 artists over and over, unlike the teens and Gen-Zs that make up much of streaming consumption. In this case, nobody would use the word flop (which only applies to streaming by the way). I disagree. Charts are supposed to be about reflecting overall popularity and consumption. And majority of music consumption these days is streaming. It's what saved the music business from totally collapsing.A ticket bundle where you pay for the CD whether you want it or not is perhaps reflective of demand to see the artist, but not of the album itself. (Yes, you have to actively redeem it for it to count towards charts, but you're paying for it as part of your ticket regardless.) Record labels don't even include things like downloads in their forecasts and budgeting anymore, it's such an insignificant part of the business, and declining at 20-40% per year. In most models, physical is not even included, or is assumed to be entirely out of the picture in 3-5 years. (This is my day job, so I am intimately acquainted...)We sign acts all the time now purely based on their streaming revenues, and they increasingly get signed for a certain number of individual tracks, not albums. And most new signings are teenagers who do urban & hop-hop, with pop and rock acts getting dropped. A&R now is all about kids who break out on social media. That's just where the business is at.
