"Courage" album - Official Topic

I still think it's cheating.

There are artists I go to shows to whose album I would not buy - especially if I'm going to see a veteran act on a greatest hits tour. :P

But if I'm charged for a CD in my ticket, I WILL redeem it, not because I want it, but because I don't want to be robbed, which I would be if I'm not redeeming an item I paid for (also, it's a total financial scam if you don't redeem it - it won't count on the charts, but you'll have paid for something you don't get, and the company gets money... for nothing in exchange).

Therefore I'm FORCED to redeem it to not lose money, whereas I would not buy it without the tour bundle.

Thus, it's an unfair boost which do not reflect the real popularity - it's dishonest.

But I really don't think streaming is fairer in reflecting sales either. Why not relying on the actual sales (digital and physical)? They lower and lower, but they exist. It's a very different action to stream something for free than make the real effort to buy them.

Why do the charts make maths this way? To reflect the new way people consume music nowadays? Maybe.

Or is it they want to put big numbers out there to impress, 'cause more is better, right?

Ah, Capitalism....

I know they all do it now so it kinda equalizes things a bit. But the NYT article just proves how problematic such a trick is.

Or maybe I'm just to old...

As for this bundle, I had a discussion about that with some friends, all agreed it's unmoral thing to do

to include an album within the price for a show. People should be given a choice

to buy it or not and point. I still think she could get a #1 thanks to her die-hard fans. :whee: :ermm:

Don't forget to stream the music videos too - well that's if you want more videos in the future because the views are not very high.

Courage is at 2.9M and Imperfections is at 4.9M (just about to hit 5M). Stream, stream... :D

I've been reading about the Macy's Parade... it seems last year audience was over 23'000.000 (Compare that to last year's AMA's 6.5 million) ......Hope that gives Courage a boost

Yes, it's regularly one of the most-watched entertainment events in the country, after the Super Bowl and the Oscars. The Grammys are often #3 (though not last year), but the other music awards are a fraction of that audience.

So yes, it's definitely a very wise move on the part of her team, but I fear it might be too little, too late.

Also, keep in mind that ~23m audience number is over the 3-hour+ broadcast. Nobody actually actively sits there and watches the full thing, it's just something people tend to have on in the background as they prep the turkey :-)

I don't quite understand how Billboard calculates all of that, for example do albums that are keep being sold

on Amazon are taken into acount for this #55 spot on billboard?

Yes. Amazon (both physical and digital), iTunes, their various offshoots, in-store retail, TEAs (track-equivalent albums; 10 track downloads = 1 album), SEAs (streaming equivalent albums; 1,250 subscription streams = 1 album, 3,750 ad-supported streams = 1 album, 3,750 video streams = 1 album).

And it's not Billboard, technically. They use SoundScan, Nielsen's data and analytics division, which they're in the process of acquiring. (Well, actually, Billboard owner Valence Media is, but in any case, once the transaction is closed SoundScan will effectively be Billboard.)

RollingStone uses a different data source (BuzzAngle), but a similar methodology.

Bundles dont count in Canada

I'm confused. If the tour bundle doesn't count for Canada why would they offer it? By offering a tour bundle that doesn't count towards the sale numbers is in fact counter productive as chances are most people won't go out and buy it since they know one will be mailed.

One thing that sony failed this time is actually to include songs that featured another young rising artist, like a duet with shawn mendes or sam smith. She alone can't survive. She needs to expand her fan base by including fans from other artists. She used to have lots of duets single. With josh groban, r kelly, etc.

Pure physical album sales is no longer the way to go.

I think one of their goals with this album was to have the focus on Celine. They could have easily had her duet with Sam Smith or Sia, but they didn't. I think that was on purpose and I appreciate that.

I'd like a few more duets in the future though.

Yes, that's my thinking as well. I certainly want one in the future, and from a purely commercial perspective, it would be a wise move, but this wasn't the forum for it. This needed to be her.

There’s always a millennial cry baby whining when she releases an album.

When it’s not Daniel Merriwhatever, it’s Tory Lanez.

Ok guys, we have to be mentally ready for what is coming next chart wise in the USA. She might not be in the top 100 next week, according to Rolling Stone. Considering her absence on the streaming platforms, she can't hold on. People just don't buy physical CD anymore. That's just the way it is, Edited by Philippe

It's quite embarrassing to be honest. She is low in streaming, that is pretty telling noone actually cares about any of her new music.

In my opinion, her Vegas run kills her career. Like throughout her setlist in Vegas, she sang very little on the songs from taking chances and loved me back to life. People only know her of her 90s hits. She played safe all the time

"I was living in a heart of glass. Until now." God I love this song!

I love when she says “I can breathe now” right after that. It’s so haunting! But it’s in a good way. I absolutely love this song :throb: I think with low lighting and her going between the arms into the audience... what a stunner it could be on tour making the focus on the lyrical content.

I think promo has a lot to do with this. And a viral campaign. I think the album’s material is worthy of lots of success. She needs to embrace the Dionassance label and not be so humble.

She drove her own tour bus in the promo video and that had a lot energy...but where did that energy go?

During her Good Morning America (or was it Today Show?) appearance, they didn’t even play any music off of the album in the background!!! People don’t care if they can’t hear the music...we don’t want another question about Rene.

But then again, is there anyone of her age doing as well as she is?

For one mariah know how to capitalize her christmas song and mariah is very good in social media, participating in tiktok, glitter campaign, and with fans as well.

Why celine can't be more active with the youngsters and she does not even know what binge is. Sigh....

Anyway, her team needs to make her more viral. Cher for example is quite active on twitter. You can tell Cher write her quotes personally, not through a personal assistant!

I’m not sure the world is ready for Céline tweets 😬

I have the feeling they’d be a lot more banal than her interviews. Love her, but a lot of what she shares with people is quite mundane.

Here is the thing, if she is strong in pyshical sales, why sony does not stock more on the retailers

We can't expect her to sell loads of CDs. There are less and less stores selling CDs now.

In the US, what is there? Walmart, Target and a few independent stores?

In Canada, the only stores I can think of are small independent record stores, and Archambault in Quebec.

I have to say that her team actually made a good effort promoting Courage on streaming services. But she is not on the popular playlists which are important. Very few casual fans are going to search for the album and listen to the whole thing. Most people who stream music just pick a playlist and play it.

I think it's time to us to realize that this has nothing to do with Vegas, or promotion, or videos, or setlist, or whatever anyone wants to blame on it.

Celine's english career it's from early 90's. No one from that time has good streaming numbers with new material. Radio, charts, streaming are for the youngers. That's just the way it is and there's nothing she could possibly do to change that.

We should be thankful she's still a active artist, dropping new material, touring almost every year, to a large number a people that worship her like the icon she is. A lot of her fellow friends didn't get that lucky. Not even Mariah, who struggles to get even small places full and is seen more as a funny diva character then the great artist she actually is.

Util people accept that, every single Celine's release will feel like a failure.

It's actually because younger audiences simply don't care about veteran acts. No amount of promo will help that unless she has an album full of soundtracks for block buster movies :sofunny:

Im sad they didnt do a promo blitz for this, we may have seen her remain in the top 40 in her second week if that was the case, but alas

But on a darker note - hate to be bearer of bad news, but album is currently sitting at #55 on Billboard Daily Top 200, with just 4.9k STEAs through end-of-day Monday.

Where’s the promo, Team Celine?!

Actually is there any promotion going on? Printed ads? Billboards? Commercials on TV, spots on the radio?! It seems Sony Music isn't doing that at all! Even if you don't do like performances on a TV show, surely an ad can be made easily with the Courage and Imperfections videos!?

Sony Music NL said they'd only do radio ads. Which is so stupid and a paradox! The radio doesn't play Céline!! A TV commercial would have been better IMO.

Said it before, this album deserves a proper TV Special! And Oprah

Where are all those interviews she did over those two days? Are they all binned? I think we only saw a fragment of them!

She drove her own tour bus in the promo video and that had a lot energy...but where did that energy go?

That energy all got drained due to the current setlist! :giggle:
