I don't quite recall which album from a main artist has been leaked recently (the last 2 / 3 years) so much in advance (2 weeks) : Taylor Swift, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Bruce Springsteen, Eminen... ?

 

People stating this is usual now are just trying to find an (invalid) excuse.

 

Is it quite the opposite, albums don't leak so early anymore, maybe one, two days before the release (which is fine). To be honest this was totally unexpected to me, why has this happened to Celine only? I guess we'll never know, but reading how happy fans seem about the fact it got leaked and how some of her fan communities haven't stopped sharing the news since then I wouldn't be surprised it was even a fan who did it.

Actually I'm not sure that the fans are happy that the album leaked. I am not. When I heard the news, I was first very sad (and surprised). But of course we are happy to listen to new Céline's songs, just as we were when Lying down, Courage and Imperfections were released. It's complicated to explain those feelings.

But I'm very depressed these days in my life, so hearing new songs last Sunday, when I was lonely at my place, was of course a good moment for me, even though I felt sad about the fact that the album leaked.

I kinda wish they didn't use LP's, Maty Noyes', Sia's (and so on) background vocals so that we could hear even more of Celine

Didn't expect album to leak that early. I want to wait still until the official release, so far I listened only to Heart of Glass and why oh why Celine pronounces the word 'glass' like this . I don't like much Sia mumbling the words, but with Celine it sounds even less natural. I hope it's not a trend for this album, though I know I will enjoy it nonetheless

Plus, theres nothing we can do at this point (besides not sharing the actual links)

Actually on day one I also thought it hadn't reached the general public but on day 2, it was a completely different story. I got links from two friends who are not Celine fans. It doesn't take long to spread to anyone who has a minimum of interest in music.

These friends would have listened to the new album out of curiosity on Spotify but now I don't think they will even bother.

Since none of my celine's fans friend gonna buy this album (at least they said so), so I won't pretend this leak won't hurt album sales. But I believe if this album succeed and got the praise from critics they will take a second chance to listen. I remember when Adele hasn't famous yet, my friends doesn't even like her songs, but after she got famous and had so much exposure they started to give her song a chance and in the end they like her songs.

I really love this album, I can't stop listening to most of the songs, I even play on repeat Perfect Goodbye for an hour right now, I wish other people can see the beauty of this album.

Just to clarify, I have not spread the leak to anyone. The reason I say this hasn't reached the general public is because the general public are her casual fans who will buy a physical copy of the album. They do not go on the celine dion forums, they dont have twitter fan accounts and dont follow fan pages. They don't know about the leak. You can even see the comments of the latest posts on celines social media, none are mentioning the leaks (and they weren't deleted because I remember seeing the comments roll in as posts were made).

 

Yes this isn't what we wanted AT ALL, but it could be worse, madonnas leaked album was covered by billboard and was much more known - yet it still sold over a million copies!. The best we can do is not share the leak and to stream extra hard when the album releases (or buy an extra copy). Lets just be positive!!

Anyway, I think this is by far her best album this century. Very coherent, each song has great production as well. Also, it's clear she probably doesn't want to do power ballads that much more, and thats fine. She has evolved as an artist and is still making quality music. Heres my quick review of the songs in standard edition

 

SPOILERS!!!! (Not sure how to add spoiler tag :/

 

Flying on my own - 7/10: Dated production, but a fun song to get your mood pumping

Lovers Never Die - 10/10: This has grown on me so much. The way she adds a little twang to her voice is amazing, plus its extremely catchy!

Falling in Love again - 9/10: BEAUTIFUL lyrics, love how the song has a soft and patient ending

Lying down - 7.5/10 : Great power ballad and vocals, could use a bridge as the ending gets a little repetitive

Courage - 9/10: Another beautiful ballad with personal lyrics, inspiring

Imperfections - 8.5/10 : Very slick production, a nice song to chill to

Change my mind - 9/10 : Surprisingly, I like the verses just as much as the chorus. The climax pushes this to a 9

Say yes - 10/10 : Breathtaking, the production is amazing. Also has grown a lot on me

Nobody's Watching - 10/10 : Again, production is amazing, love how you can click along to this song. This song literally makes me want to dance like nobodies watching, hence a 10/10

The Chase - 10/10: I promise I'm not just giving 10's for the sake of it. This has so much substance, can listen on repeat forever

For the lover that I lost - 7.5/10 : Production is amazing, melody too. Her pronunciation is a little distracting, and wish the song had more 'oomph' deserved something a climax or something

Baby - 6.5/10 : This song isnt bad by any means, but is a little too generic for me. I like the ending though

I will be stronger - 9/10 : Didn't know where the song was going during the first verse, but once the chorus hit, wow! Beautiful lyrics as well

How did you get here - 10/10: Love the instrumentals. This style suits her very well!!

Look at us now - 10/10: I give this a 10 for the same reason as 'How did you get here'. Extremely catchy

Perfect Goodbye - 9.5/10: Great song to finish off with, lyrics are very touching. Only thing holding it from a 10 is her closed pronunciation which took some time getting used to

 

Overall, a beautiful album. I wouldnt be surprised if its her favourite album too, I HOPE she performs some of these songs live, they are too good to not be performed!

That's the whole point. The leak won't have such a big financial impact, as it won't make a huge different selling 100K or 120K, but 2K less can mean debuting at #1 or #5 nowadays. We were all worried because a November release would mean tougher competition, but she has been lucky enough to not having any big names against her on Nov 15 (unless Adele does a surprise release). A #1 album means also free publicity as all news would report it "Celine Dion first number 1 since 2002..." and this would help to keep the momentum in the second week. If a person takes the effort to actually search the leaked album that person has an interest on the album, so without the leak that would have probably meant a new stream on Friday 15. Also fans, even though they claim they will stream the album on the 15 it won't be at the same level as many have been listening to it for two weeks already. And this also kills their strategy. They had planned listening parties. Fans would go and then they would give her reviews, building anticipation, what's the point now? To me is really annoying, but maybe is only me that really want this album to do well (which of course would mean more videos, more cool writers and producers wanting to work with her in the future. etc etc)

Just one said in French "it's a bit different from what we have the habit to listen" but I thought it could be understood as ""Flying on my own" is special" ahah. I hope it will help Céline. I like all the songs but maybe 5 songs need to grow on me which are... I Will Be Stronger, How Did You Get Here, Look at Us Now, The Chase, Lovers Never Die

 

I know we keep on about it but Play Me Like A Love Song would have fit so well on Courage, I wish Irit would make a comment about it, I can only imagine it will be used for a soundtrack surely?
