How come she didn't include her live singing voice in the obituary? :shifty:

Nice melody but the lyrics are so banal. Too pedestrian, too soap-operatic to have an effect on me. I guess not everyone can be as poetic about death as Jean-Jacques Goldman. Holy Mimi's low notes sounds good but the portion where she belts just grates on my nerves bec. of all the strain she's applying into her voice.

Anyway, if somebody as sales-centered as Mimi believes that such a serious song could work as a single, what's stopping the Sony nincompoops from releasing "This Time" as a single? :glare:

Mariah gets her expected 18th number one single this week. :D

Mariah, Madonna Make Billboard Chart Historyhttp://www.billboard.com/bbcom/images/spacer.gifSilvio Pietroluongo, N.Y.Two leading ladies, Mariah Carey and Madonna, leapfrog over Elvis Presley in the Billboard charts record book this week.

As expected, Mariah Carey moves past Elvis Presley and into sole possession of second place for most No. 1s in the rock era, as "Touch My Body" soars 15-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to become her 18th chart-topper. With her album "E=MC2" yet to hit retail, Carey might equal the Beatles' record of 20 No. 1s before her set runs its course.

"Body's" blast to No. 1 is fueled by a record-setting debut week digital tally of 286,000 downloads. That sum, good enough for the No. 1 slot on Hot Digital Songs, surpasses the 277,000 downloads labelmate Rihanna opened with in the June 9, 2007, issue with her summer smash "Umbrella."

Presley will also be nudged from his standing as the artist with the most top 10s in the rock era, as Madonna surpasses him with her 37th top 10, "4 Minutes." The track, which features Justin Timberlake, clocks a 68-3 jump. Previous to the establishment of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958, the industry standard chart was the Best Sellers in Stores tally, where Presley scored his first 12 top 10s.

Like Carey's "Touch," Madonna's Hot 100 jump is spurred by stupendous download sales. "4 Minutes" shifts 217,000 in its first week of wide release (it had been available as a Verizon exclusive) to enter Hot Digital Songs at No. 2.

This is the first time since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2003 that two titles debut simultaneously on Hot Digital Songs with more than 200,000 downloads each. The week also marks the best single-week digital tally in either artist's career.

Holy Mimi will top both album and single charts but guess where she will be in the Forbes Rich List next year. BELOW Vegas queen and world tour diva Celine Dion. :P :P :P

I'd rather see Céline high up in the Hot 100, rather than high in the Forbes Rich List...

I'm so glad for Mariah and Madonna! Breaking the records of Elvis! Way to go!

And Mariah is coming up with such a great album. All five songs I've heard so far are BRILLIANT!!!!

Love story - I'm that chick - Bye Bye - Touch my body - Migrate

Week Ending March 30, 2008: Roll Over Elvis (And Tell The Beatles The News)

Posted Wed. Apr 2, 3:11 PM ET by Paul Grein in Chart Watch

Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" debuts at #1 on the Hot Digital Songs chart and is set to jump to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, which will be finalized on Thursday. This will be Carey's 18th #1 single, which will put her in a tie with Elvis Presley for second place among artists with the most #1 singles in the rock era (1955 to the present). Only the Beatles have had more. They scored 20.

Carey first topped the Hot 100 in August 1990 with "Vision Of Love." Elvis first topped the Top 100 (the precursor to the Hot 100) in 1956 with "Heartbreak Hotel." He scored his last #1 in 1969 with "Suspicious Minds." The Beatles crammed their 20 #1 hits into a commercially and creatively unsurpassed 6-1/2 year stretch, from "I Want To Hold Your Hand" in 1964 to "The Long And Winding Road" in 1970.

Diana Ross is tied with Presley and Carey at 18 #1 hits, if you combine her 12 chart-toppers with the Supremes and the six from her solo career. Michael Jackson is a beat behind with 17, if you combine his four #1 hits fronting the Jackson 5 and the 13 from his solo career. Other artists with 10 or more #1 hits are: Madonna, 12; Whitney Houston, 11; and Janet Jackson and George Michael, 10 each.

"Touch My Body" registered 286,000 paid downloads this week--the fourth highest weekly total in digital history. (It's the highest total outside of Christmas week.)

But that's only half the story of Carey's dream week. She also becomes only the third artist--and the first woman--to top the 50 million mark in album sales, as measured by Nielsen/SoundScan. As of this week, she has sold 50,004,000 albums since the scanning service set up shop in May 1991. She trails Garth Brooks, who has sold 67,774,000 albums since that date, and the Beatles, whose tally in this period stands at 56,110,000.

Carey will not be the only 50-million selling woman for long. Celine Dion's career total stands at 49,951,000, which puts in her fourth place overall. Dion will top the 50 million mark in three or four weeks. Of course, by then Carey will have added significantly to her total with her new studio album, E=MC2, which is due on April 15. The opening week numbers for Carey to beat are 375,000 (the current record opening for 2008, held by Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static) and 404,000 (Carey's best opening week to date, set by her last album, The Emancipation Of Mimi).

This part is talking about the best selling artist of the soundscan era. It's talking about the soundscan sales in USA. Celine would sell over 50million album in the US soon. Soundscan doesn't count the sales of the music clubs.

^ yes but although celine is undercertified with RIAA (which does count club sales) her riaa total would still be a bit below mariah's.

Carey Discusses Her Single-Packed New Album, "E=MC2," And More In This Interview Expanded From The Billboard Cover Story

Ann Donahue, L.A.

On a recent Monday morning, Mariah Carey flew the red-eye from New York to Los Angeles, stopped by Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show to chat, recorded a background vocal track for the song "I Stay in Love" for her upcoming album, then went through hair and makeup and recorded a video for Wal-Mart's "Soundcheck" series, which will be used as bonus footage online and played in stores.

By the time all of this was done, it was just past noon. Her afternoon consisted of another radio interview on rhythmic KPWR (Power 106) Los Angeles, and then a return to the studio at night to work on mastering the album.

For Carey, "E=MC2"—due April 15 via Island Def Jam— is the representation of her formula for success, and it's one that requires an extreme expenditure of energy.

After the comeback success of 2005's "The Emancipation of Mimi," 38-year-old Carey is in overdrive to make "E=MC2" another hit. A multitude of promotional plans—from mobile initiatives to copious TV appearances—are designed to appeal to fans of the classic balladeer Carey and her current hip-hop incarnation.

Mariah Carey made time during her busy schedule to sit down with Billboard and chat about her new album, her Elizabeth Arden fragrance, voice maintenance and much more.

How do you come up with lyrics?

I do write down phrases or things that I'm thinking of and keep them in the book. I like to see that, OK, I was doodling and I was thinking of this. With "We Belong Together," I had written that down that phrase and when we were writing the song, it was right there and it was just very obvious.

Even "Migrate" on "E=MC2," we'll be at my apartment, and let's say it's getting a little bit light out, and we're upstairs in the Moroccan Room. I'll be working on something and we'll listen to it up there because I have a good sound system there [but then] I'll say, 'We have to migrate [to the] Mermaid Room!' It's a room that's inspired by water and sand, but it has blackout shades as opposed to the light of day, like a media room.

You write or co-write almost all your songs—what's your process? What inspires you to write?

For each album, I try to have a book that I write the whole thing in. This was a long time ago. I don't have birthdays, I only have anniversaries [laughs]. But actually, this was the last birthday party I had . . . I think it was my 21st birthday, even though I'm only 12. We had it in advance [laughs]. Cyndi Lauper came to the party and I've always been a big fan of hers since I was growing up. She gave me this book, and I wound up writing the whole "Music Box" album in this book, which I still have.

Jay-Z said something to me that was really interesting, and I don't even know if he really remembers this. He's known me for a long time, and he's like, "You need to use some of your phrases in your music." I have my own little slang that I make up and say stupid stuff just for laughs. [On] the song "O.O.C."— that's a Swizz Beatz track—it means, "Out of control." So me and my friends will say that to each other, like, "OK, you're a little O.O.C. right now, tone it on down." Da Brat, who's a really good, close friend of mine since we worked on "Always Be My Baby," we wrote the lyrics together and it was so fun. By saying [sings], "I get so O.O.C./So out of control, baby," we could explain it.

When somebody was helping me type up the lyrics, and they wrote "Out of Control" in parenthesis [next to the song title], I was like, "Get rid of that. It's 'O.O.C.'! Let them figure it out! It's not that tough! I say it in the next line!"

What's your ideal schedule?

I'm kind of a nocturnal person. I don't really go outside during the day much, because I'm usually sleeping; I need like 15 hours of sleep before I sing. I have to schedule in days off for vocal rest. A lot of people say, 'What do you mean she needs this day off for that?' And it's like, well, I do. My vocal chords are very different than most people's -- even though they're strong, they're different, because I actually have nodules that are actually helpful in hitting certain high notes. But they require maintenance, and that's why you'll talk to me, like today, on a not-that-much sleep day, and I don't know if I could hit any notes today [Laughs.]

What else do you do in terms of voice maintenance you've often called it 'your instrument.'

The days of rest are really it. I sit here with my throat sprays, and spraying water and drinking a lot of water is kind of the only thing I can do. A lot of people get obsessive with trying to take things for their throat it doesn't work the same for me. And I just got over the flu, so that can be something that will stop me in my tracks. But sometimes I'll sing better with a cold, as long as it's not in my throat. It's weird. My voice has a mind of it's own [Laughs]. You have to maintain it, and you have to have these vocal rest days. I'll be doing what you're doing, just writing notes instead of talking. It's total silence, and sometimes I'll whisper softly. It's not good to whisper for your voice, it's not good to stage whisper.

Have you thought about touring for this album?

It's come up, and I'm probably going to do it, but I don't know exactly how we're going to do it or when. I'm thinking probably September. But I think it's important to tour with this album, because there are so many songs that I really want to sing live, that I really enjoy. Fun songs, like "I'm That Chick" or "O.O.C.," and then the ballads, of course. I really want to do "I Wish You Well" and "I Stay in Love" and "Bye Bye."

Do you ever think about surpassing the Beatles with their 20 No. 1s?

I do, because people bring it up. [laughs] But it's not like I sit around thinking about that type of stuff while I'm creating something. I did write this record in terms of wanting it to be a lot of songs that could potentially be singles, because people like that.

What else do you have going on right now besides music?

I did a perfume, and that's something where I didn't just say "OK, do this for me." This was very much a creation and a collaborative moment with Elizabeth Arden and the people that worked there. It did take a little bit a lot of my time, and I'm very grateful 'cause it's by the grace of God, it's been a big success for me. It just got nominated for a Fifi Award! [by the Fragrance Foundation for best Women's Luxe fragrance.] It's a big deal!

It's like major, people. It's been really cool. But the point is, anything else that I want to do does take away from the old school get in the studio and make the album. Get to singin'!

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/feature/art...t_id=1003783899

with all honesty, if i will be given a chance to interview mariah, i would ask her MARIAH, ARE YOU AWARE THAT YOU LOST YOUR VOICE? YOU ARE ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR VOICE, BUT IS THIS THE RESULT OF ALL OF THIS? YOU CAN'T SING LIVE ANYMORE...

i love u mariah, but pls stop acting as if you are the greatest live singer alive. stop talking about your routines in taking care of your voice cause it annoys me! you have no voice now. just release your album and leave everyting to us. even us, your fans, know that you lost your voice long before your so-called 'emancipation'.

wow, this sounds like tough love coming from you, b/c it seems as if you really like Mariah...

i totally see what you're saying and its not just from this interview but all the ones that i have seen, she really comes across as if she is the greatest thing on earth, and that's what tee's me off...

she, for once, should take a step back to her humble beginning and realize what a gift she's got. she loves herself so much and it's not good for her. being proud is fine but she should shut her mouth if she'll only speak about her voice. she really thinks she has the greatest voice ever and it's killing me! i love her 'studio' voice on her albums, but she should not try to perform them live. and what are those routines she is talking about? mariah, stop it! i love you and will surely get your new album, but for God's sake, stop talking about how you take care of your voice pls! and is your live voice the result of your routine? i'd rather sound like Janet Jackson on live performances than sound like you mariah! surely janet can't hit big notes, but she sounds fine live and she never let fame gets in her head. I think Mariah is such a nice person! When people ask you about your voice, I think it's good she talks about it so openly. Céline has done the same in interviews and she seems to be a nice person as well.

The Mariah Carey we love here in Holland, is the Mariah who comes out of the hotel to talk to her fans, give autographs, go on pictures with the fans and even talks through their phones to say "hi" to their friends. Mariah has even asked friends of mine inside the hotel to have lunch with her. There are not many artists out there who would do the same.

well she always seems very genuine with her fans...so i gotta give her kudos for that ...she was on tv show here "the friday night project" and she co hosted it ...and she came across very well.....i just wish she would stop with the cutesy bimbo thing...she is worth more than that......and i will never forgive her for answering the door in her new vid in her bra and knickers...........that is so NOT taking care of your voice...lol

she mimed touch my body on the tv show...and it may be a number 1 .....but i dont like it...either lyrically or how its performed.......and if she were a lolly pop she would lick herself to death.....the ego is enormous!!!...lol

love doesn't ask why

speaks from the heart and never explains

dont you know that love doesn't think twice

it can come all at once or whisper from a distance

don't get me wrong i do believe she really loves her fans. i love her, but she should not talk about how she take care of her voice cause it's very obvious that she lost it.

i wonder how she will answer me if i ask her if she's aware that she lost her voice and it is at its worst now...
