Then what is the point? He said the lyrics are more meaningful and that non French speakers won't connect with it the same way as native speakers. And implying that non French speakers are only picking up on the beat and rhythm, not the message. And to that I argue you don't need to speak the language of a song in order to connect with it. Everyone has ears and can look up the lyrics and understand it. Good music is good music. Who cares is something sounds more "French" or "American" whatever that means.

No, he did not mean that people who do not speak French would not get the message. As you said, everyone can access translations. His comment was about the quality of the lyrics, their applicability and durability. And usually these are not criteria fans are concerned with as long as the beat and the vocals sound good. Especially fans in this forum, I will add. I will never forget how I organised the 'Survivor' game a few years back where each week members would vote to eliminate songs from Celine's catalogue - just about 30 to 40 members participated in the rounds focused on her English music, but when it came to her French music I ended up playing with just about 5 people. 😅 So the point Alex made was not about understanding the message of a specific song. He made a judgement based on contextual information as he has actually dived into Celine's French music. This has given him perspective to understand where BPM sits with the rest of her catalogue. And it is true that most members here lack this contextual information and I am not saying this to offend anyone. In my books, this is a well documented reality.

Also, there IS a theme in comments of French speaking fans that the song is bland and that Celine's enunciation is not good. The last point especially is not something we can disregard by saying 'who cares'. People do care and if you remember most complaints about the 'Courage' album related to poor enunciation - sometimes it was difficult to understand what Celine was saying. And I think, as fans, we should be having these discussions that go beyond whether we like or dislike a song.

To end this on a positive note, my mom heard the song and she said it's brilliant, like 9/10. So yes, many people like it and that's great. If it performs well, I'll be happy.

The song is NOT bland, its lyrics are simple, yes,but also deep and very spiritual.

If you have any knowledge of Gnosticism, you would understand its true meaning...

This is a dismissive oversimplification. Nobody critiqued fans for liking the song. Alex initiated a discussion about its lyrical content. You like what you like. This goes without saying. However, we should have the right to say that one song has more quality lyrics than another, without people getting all upset.

In your opinion.

You stating that “Dansons” is a higher quality song does not make it fact.

Others, like you say, have the right to disagree.

Not good at making arguments and debating? Just a sweeping generality, eh?

I find the English translation of BPM - (and how I feel it’s Celine talking directly to us, her fans) far more engaging and emotional than the ‘snowflakes on the horizon’ blandness of the snoozefest that is Dansons, but that’s just my opinion. I’m happy that some people prefer the JJG creation but it’s not for me.

Why do we always have to get so offended when someone has a different opinion?? Newsflash- offence is a choice.

The monolingual Brits are out in full force with this one! 😂  I guess a bonus of this track is that almost anyone can understand the meaning of the title.

I know that many fans on here want something they can dance to in a cage at a gay bar.  And that's great.  We all have our opinions. Even the most uninformed.

Bonjour Pardon and Merci to everyone.

Ah yeah, us fans who only know one language. What do we know eh? Our opinions must be uninformed.

Didn’t realise we operated a two tier fandom. Us non French speakers must keep our mouths shut on all things French!

We can’t have an opinion on a song being quality or not. My bad.

Let’s dance.

Sadly all of our Team Céline cards have been deactivated.   Though to be totally honest, mine had at least 3 errors in my name.

I just hope if this song is part of the Paris setlist that they keep her backing vocals in and only call on the beautiful voices for the choir section of the song.

Definitely my new favourite French song of hers ❤️

No, it seems that the ones who are not allowed to be having an opinion is me and Alex. This entire discussion takes place because Alex posted a negative opinion about BPM and people reacted to it. Literally, Alex posted that the quality of the lyrics is subpar and that some people probably never pay attention to the lyrics (which is true, in general).

Then we had three reactions, in that order:

1) Kevin said "you don't like the song, we get that", when Alex had said before that the song grew on him.

2) queenofvegas thought Alex implied one needed to be French to understand the message of the song.

3) You felt Alex had a problem with people liking the song and you found that absurd considering it's a pop record. I explained to you that this was not the case, that your response was dismissive, and that everyone can have an opinion as long as we stay on topic, and you chose again to respond to me in a dismissive, sarcastic manner, even reacting with a laughing emoji. Above everything else, this was all unnecessary considering that we co-exist in this forum for like 15 years and I had never, ever, responded to you like that.

Then stevo posts about respecting opposing opinions and you liked his post, moments after you had mocked mine. This is either hypocrisy or complete lack of self awareness. And now that Alex hit back, you run for the role of the victim. Poor you!

As much as people hate it, the opinion of a French teacher, who lives in Paris, and who is familiar not only with Celine's entire catalogue but contemporary francophone music in general IS an informed opinion. Does this mean we need to take it at face value? No! But to acknowledge where it comes from and how it was informed constitutes good practice and also indicates a certain level of self-security. To each their own, of course!

Over the past few days, I've been listening to French radio stations for hours every day, mainly Chante France and M Radio. Some other very popular stations, sorry to say, are simply unlistenable.

I've heard quite a few Céline songs (Les derniers seront les premiers, Prière païenne, On ne change pas, etc.), but I've only heard "Bonjour, pardon, merci" twice.

Has anyone else heard it on the radio? If so, on which station?

Luke, I am not going to get into a tit for tat argument with you or Alex over a song. It’s ludicrous. You, and he, can have the last word by replying to this again if you wish.

Alex, and you, are entitled to your opinions on the quality of a song, or on any issue, in any language, at any time.

Others, as you rightly say, are entitled to their opinions too.

The concept of the song is nice: we should greet people when we meet them, say sorry when we are in the wrong, thank people to show appreciation and say I love you to the people that matter.

On the other hand, the execution of that song and that 'poem' that consists of 3 or 4 words is lacking: the initial opening lyrics are sped up, you can't sort what she is talking about ( and no I am not going to slow the pitch down,  normally Celine or her manager should have noticed the error and fixed it prior to releasing it),  the constant vocalizing on every line of the song is tiring,  who told her to do that, and that person should have been fired, then she jumps and says that 'poem' that consists of 3 words needs a 4th verse I love you. We never know why should we say those 3 or 4 verse,  it just drags into endless vocalizing and repetition.

If you compare it to Parler a mon pere that is also a simplistic song, you can clearly see that PAMP has structure,  and much more meaning to it and a much better  chorus than BPM, which leaves you wanting more.

I think it’s a beautiful thing that people disagree on their favorites… we are all different.

I think the reason I prefer BPM over Dansons is purely because of Celine’s vocals… I do however understand that Dansons calls for a more subdued vocal so it made sense, I just missed the vocals from years ago that we haven’t had in awhile.

Celines vocals on BPM gives me that old school vibe from her best moments.

I think some people find this

Have you seen the comments on the YouTube video?  All overwhelmingly positive about BPM, and that can’t be said for Dansons.

I love both songs but for me BPM is more full and repayable.
