To me, European Portuguese sounds "strange and funny" hehehehe. 1 Quote

And "more pleasing" is just subjective. I personally really love when we can hear her québécois accent in her singing. You could hear it a lot more in the 80s in certain vowel sounds. On youtube you can find a lot of comparisons of the accents. I think a lot of people who speak France French are very harsh about the québécois accent, but that comes from not being exposed to it a lot (France doesn't import a lot of Québ media). I live in France, but I grew up not far from the Québec border and I really, really love québécois French. Edited July 2, 2026 at 02:18 PM by Els 1 1 Quote
jmiracle Posted July 2, 2026 at 02:20 PM Posted July 2, 2026 at 02:20 PM I love Québésois French. And I agree that some vowels int the song are pronounced in Québécois somehow (but not really). The strange feeling comes from the fact that in the same song, she "switches" from one prononciation to another. But I do love the song ! 1 Quote

I personally never minded her vocals there, but I’m still hearing what many here have complained about, and are now praising. I think the reality is that the throatiness (for lack of a better term -- maybe it's more of a glottal sound?) is part of her natural aging process. It stuck out on Courage because of the relative lack of anything else that resembled her technique. She still has that sound now, more or less when she's belting, but she also sounds like herself again vocally, so I think in hindsight that wasn't the actual issue people thought it was. Quote

AdrienneM Posted July 2, 2026 at 02:45 PM Posted July 2, 2026 at 02:45 PM Having listened to the longer minute and a half clip on Twitter, I do notice that tonally she sounds the same way that she herself found unacceptable and it definitely has more of the dark, froggy, throaty sound than Danson does. I’m in two minds about it- I do overall find (admittedly, only an excerpt) the song to be beautiful, as is usual for her French repertoire the song is not a huge bombastic high note fest, it’s a lot more intentional, and I enjoy the variations in cadence and the modern phrasing you’ll find in a lot of French music these days, but paired with a classical Celine arrangement. On the other hand while I personally don’t mind the way she’s singing, it’s exactly what she described as her “tunnel” voice sonically, and it does make me wonder if that’s something that with time she’s realised she’ll never really be able to shake if she’s singing in a full chest voice. Roll on midnight tho, and even more so, roll on September 12th!!! Quote

For me the way she sings is EXACTLY what she herself explained as being the tunnel voice related to her disease in Hoda’s interview illustrating it by singing some lines of the Power of love with the tunnel voice and the normal one. So maybe she is now in peace with that. At least she is back to being able to « amazingly » sing and certainly with higher potential than most of the people just that this is for me not always pretty in term of tone. Quote
stevo Posted July 2, 2026 at 02:53 PM Posted July 2, 2026 at 02:53 PM (edited) I just think it sounds like her 🤷🏻♂️ she has always been very stylised (lurrrrrverrrverrrverrve- love it or hate it) and even without what she’s gone through with SPS, her voice is maturing and changing and it’s amazing she can still do it and sound so great. Just think of that clip from the Doc of her recording Love Again….and listen to this and appreciate the wonder of Celine! Edited July 2, 2026 at 02:54 PM by stevo 6 Quote

In the second verse, I think it stands out in "on en manquera toujours". But maybe I'm not referencing the same aspect of her sound that other people are describing. But yeah, it's also definitely very Céline. Quote

Celine acknowledges, and I’m sure we all do, that at 58 her voice and her range will not be the same as it was at 28, 38 or even 48, and that even without SPS being in the picture that would still be the case. However, she also stated that she refused to accept a “new voice”, and that she wanted her own back at full capacity. Given the range of these two newest songs, being very deliberately arranged in the mid-fourth octave, it does make me wonder if she can still reliably access the fifth octave (in chest voice anyway), or if that area vocally is just not present for her anymore- and if it isn’t, how she will rearrange certain songs and interpret them in new ways (which is really what interests me most) Edited July 2, 2026 at 03:47 PM by AdrienneM 1 Quote

CelinesDIVO5 Posted July 2, 2026 at 03:48 PM Posted July 2, 2026 at 03:48 PM Some of you keep talking about the “tunnel voice” like it’s a technique. It’s not. She was simply explaining that she had to get creative and find the best channel to be able to project her voice when she felt herself tightening up. Celine wasn’t speaking of the sound of her voice more than she was explaining that she had to make a “tunnel” through her nose and use her head voice the majority of the time to get through a performance. She wasn’t speaking on it like it was a technique a vocalist uses. What she did could actually be rather harmful for the voice, but as we know, she had no choice. What some of you are describing as “tunnel voice” on this track, is not what Celine was explaining to Hoda. 5 Quote https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL54qnRGM2gMatthew Charles - "Fix You" - Live at The Stonewall InnStonewall Sensation - Season 15Originally written and performed by Coldplay
Ajax Posted July 2, 2026 at 03:54 PM Posted July 2, 2026 at 03:54 PM That s the way I understood it. But she also mentioned that the consequence was a specific sound coming from the nose. Used then some lines of Power of Love to show how it sounded. Deep nasal as a consequence of this tunnel. Quote

What some of you are describing as “tunnel voice” on this track, is not what Celine was explaining to Hoda. She audibly demonstrated how her voice sounded as a result of the different mechanisms she was using to project her voice and achieve a level of stability that her body wasn’t allowing her to normally, and then demonstrated more than once (in separate interviews) how she sounded whilst freeing up all that tension in her neck and projecting a fuller, less nasal and constricted sound. On this song she has the aforementioned sound and tone to her voice, it’s not about whether or not she’s actually still having to find a pathway in her throat/face to safely project her voice, it’s about the fact that she herself stated that she not only didn’t like how it sounded, but also that she wasn’t happy to continue that moving forward during her vocal rehabilitation. 1 Quote
