As morbid as it is to take advantage of this horrible situation, fact is big media companies like Netflix, Prime Video, AppleTV and HBO are going to be very interested in this doc now.

 

I find really sad that our icons need to live a hell of a drama or die to get the recognition they earn.

I think she was already seen as a living legend enough to command big interest. But you're right, this will intensify things -- depends what direction they decide to take with the documentary.

 

With Celine, I think she is constantly underrated and underappreciated. Yesterday was a huge coming together around her, which was wonderful to see.

Oh absolutely, only then.

I was just thinking of how Irene's best work is about people dealing with and overcoming physical limitations. She has literally already made a doc about a musical vitruoso losing his ability to do the thing that made him who he was.

 

Here and Now (Peabody Award) was about her parents, who were deaf, getting cochlear implants late in life and learning to hear.

Moonlight Sonata was about her son (also born deaf) getting his implant and learning to play piano (the titular piece, which of course Beethoven wrote while going deaf.)

Open Your Eyes was about providing cataract surgeries to those in the Himalayas who spent years without sight.

Final Inch (Oscar nominated) was a documenary short about the efforts to eradicate polio.

 

So she knows how to handle this kind of subject, I think. If Celine feels comfortable and is willing to share, I think this could be something quite compelling.

 

 

When was the documentary announced? It's almost too coincidental that Celine gets an award winning documentary filmmaker that has great experience in telling the stories of people with disabilities. It's either a coincidence or Celine was already with spasms and thought to document her journey to getting better not knowing it'd end in a 1 in a million diagnosis.

Oh, coincide, I think. Was announced in fall 2021, and they were hiring an associate producer earlier this year, for a ~9-month production (which I suspect is extended/ delayed).

 

There was a post on Twitter from one of her songwriters who said she was suffering some of these symptoms as early as 2014 though…

If we go back to the “Taking Chances” world tour, in 2009ish Celine also had spasms… we all saw it again after Rene passed by late 2016. Either she was just super prone to getting spasms in general or this disorder could have manifested years and years ago.

I can’t help but wonder if they had been discussing the next documentary BEFORE Céline got her initial diagnosis in Summer/Fall 2021, and then Sony brought Irene on board AFTER specifically because she’s adept at telling this kind of story.

 

Of course we don’t have proof, but I think it’s more than just a coincidence…

I can’t help but wonder if Céline & Sony brought her in *after* Céline got the initial diagnosis, *specifically* because she’s adept at telling this kind of story.

 

I wonder how long Celine has had this official diagnosis, I would bet it was fairly recent when the doctors officially diagnosed it. That’s just my thoughts.

The way it sounds to me at least, she needed time to absorb it but is ready to tell the world what has happened. Her last video announcement, I don’t think she knew. Otherwise she would’ve said something. But she was like I’m getting there but not quite back to 100% yet. She was so much more emotional this time, so I’m assuming they just discovered it and reality is starting to strike. I’m just glad they know what it is so they can target it specifically. And if she is having daily therapy they are certainly working very hard to get her back to somewhat of a normal place, whatever that is now.

Correct, but as someone observed in a different thread, when Sia tweeted that heartfelt message to Céline recently, that was obviously because she had been told the news… privately.

 

Who knows how long Céline herself had known the diagnosis before she was even comfortable enough to tell Sia. Weeks? Months?

 

How long have the doctors suspected a rare neurological disorder, but advised Céline to hold off on making an announcement until tests discovered & confirmed it? A year? It’s plausible at least!

I just wonder if her gearing up and rehearsing for the new show is what was the final straw. I know things like this don’t pop up out of nowhere, but I wonder if her getting back into the swing of things maybe was what brought on the first rounds of these mysterious spasms.

I think she probably had spasms occasionally, and thought nothing of it, as we all get that from time to time. They got worse, and she had to postpone all of these shows…. But somehow based off of the post where announces her disorder… it feels to me as if the diagnosis was very recent. I don’t think Celine ran to social media to tell us the next day, I have a feeling they probably found out a few weeks prior and since they pushed back instead of canceling many tour dates, they probably waited to have confirmation with the rescheduling of the venues for the 2024 dates… they probably wanted to come with all of the info all at once. I’d suppose we won’t hear anything else from Celine til April at earliest.

They could choose to shift the focus of the documentary from performing/touring/being in the limelight...to being a human going through a horrible diagnosis and trying to manage her future and legacy. I suppose it will take months/years to find out more information about this project

Now we know officially that her future is up in the air, I can’t imagine them releasing those anytime soon. We’ll see what 2023 brings, but if she isn’t able to resume performing in any capacity, then all that archive footage may be needed in the future for long-term releases/revenues.

Or on the contrary Sony Music may choose to start releasing a lot of good archival material sooner than expected, like the English version of the LTAL tour, the Millenium Concert, Celine Live in Las Vegas, the 2016-2018 tours. .. I want to believe that everything will work out for the best but Celine will hardly ever perform live like before. Hopefully she can continue to record and release many good albums of originals. Let's pray for Celine!

I believe Vital Vegas had reported that doubts on whether the residency would start/happen had been circulating since around August.

I remember not believing that when I read it but now I think it may have been true.

All the silence…

 

I was really hoping she was going to be okay and return to performing. Even with her long absence, I never anticipated something of this magnitude.

 

Before we knew the facts, I just thought everything she’s already been through had caught up with her… all the personal loss and taking on the business side of show business… thus causing the spasms … and she needed to bow out of the spotlight for a while.

 

And now… she’s facing a life-changing diagnosis. So soon after immense grief in her life.

Yeah, I honestly kind of thought she was just having weird leg spasms or something from dancing around in high heels all her life. It never even occurred to me that something serious could be going on.

The question is how long would one speculate she was actually diagnosed. Why would they wait so long to announce it if they knew the magnitude, why wouldn’t they clean her slate and cancel all foreseeable dates. There’s much more here than we understand.

 

I imagine she got the official diagnosis anywhere from 3 weeks ago to 3 months ago. Maybe they had narrowed it down to neurological stuff and were not sure exactly what it was. I don't know.

If Celine has decided to continue with this documentary, it’s going to be captivating considering all that’s happened. It could be something very special.

 

Whitney Houston is getting a lot of praise these days thanks to the film about her life. Celine deserves the same respect.

 

I hope Celine is finding some excellent treatment right now.

It’s also Christmas weekend. People are traveling, and shopping, and spending time with family, rather than going to the movies. It’s also the 6th night of Chanukah, and Shabbat starts on Friday at sun down. This was a stupid weekend to try and open a movie.

Also we had a massive storm that obliterated most of the country. But tbh, I didn’t know anyone anticipating watching. It would’ve done better in streaming format.
