Good news.

 

I still wonder by what criteria they chose just Irene. She didn't seem interested in show business. Did Sony suggest this project or did she contact them? Obviously there was something in Céline's story that she found inspiring.

 

I really appreciate her work and can't wait to see the document. Plus it's comforting to know that Céline, usually hassled to this day by lacklustre journalists or third-rate writers, has finally found the attentive, empathetic speaker she deserves...

Wonderful news! I think there will be a lot of interest in a Celine documentary... There's a lot of interest in Celine right now, considering all she's faced with the loss of Rene and her sickness. So many people would watch this documentary not only for the music career highlights but also because of her personal hardships. This could be the beginning of Celine getting a new wave of appreciation and recognition.

 

Even before her sickness, she was becoming a more fascinating figure to a lot of people. With her fashion, etc.

This is fantastic news. So happy to know it’s still moving forward. I think a beautifully-done documentary is exactly what Celine’s public image needs right now — and it should get a lot of attention once it’s released… not only because it will showcase Celine’s massive career but also because of her diagnosis and all the loss she’s faced over the past few years.

 

I hope it introduces Celine’s music and talents to many more new fans… brings back some old fans… and changes the minds of naysayers who maybe wrote Celine off without understanding what an international, layered, intricate and fascinating music career she’s had.

 

I have a pretty tall order for this documentary. I’m sure Celine’s condition and the loss of Rene will be a huge part of it — but I also hope it shines light on her amazing achievements in music (breaking records in French and English album sales, reinventing Vegas, countless awards, etc) and highlights some rare moments like the Phil Spector sessions. Those nuggets will bring in fans of music who maybe aren’t fans of Celine.

 

And of course, I hope it all leads to Celine being healthy and well enough to enjoy her day-to-day life — and engage in her career again in some capacity. That would be a lovely ending to the documentary.

 

It’s great that this project is in the hands of such an esteemed filmmaker. It should be very special with a real point of view — and I can only imagine she’s inspired to do right by Celine.

I can understand your expectations, probably shared by most of the fandom and invigorated by the announcement that the film "will commemorate the Canadian songstress' incredible life story and career accomplishments" (I'm just wondering if this is an official announcement or if the Céline website is the source), but personally I have some doubts. I've seen most of Irene Taylor Brodsky's work and none of it was lavish, flashy, commercial or "big" in the sense of, say, René Rather, they are intimate, thoughtful, quite frugal in form and pared-down in style.

 

What's more, of the directors mentioned in the text (Asif Kapadia, Alison Ellwood, Dawn Porter), Irene is perhaps the only one who has never made a typical biopic. Admittedly, it sometimes tells the story of someone's career, but never once has it been a classic tribute film. The role of music in some of her creations is sometimes important, but what ITB puts at the center of the project is always something more existential than the achievements of her heroes; examples: « Homeless : The Soundtrack », 2018 (« Years after being taken away from her birth parents by the state, placed in the foster care system, then adopted out at age four, singer songwriter Jenni Alpert ("Cami") went searching for her birth father. How did Céline and Irene's paths cross? Perhaps it was "One Last Hug: Three Days at Grief Camp" (2014), which recounts the experience of grieving children after the death of a loved one? ITB knows perfectly how to tell the story of "a life with problems" (the way she shows her father succumbing to Alzheimer's is one of the most poignant I've seen in a documentary) without ever slipping into a soapy aesthetic or an emotional banality of the happy ending. I hope we'll get a fascinating portrait of a previously unseen Céline. But will it have the bite and momentum to serve as a promotional tool for the general public? I'm not sure.

I hope the documentary is designed in a way that impresses even non-Celine fans... with additions of interesting chapters in her career like the Phil Spector sessions, etc. While also covering the amazing highlights and achievements in her career.

 

The fact that she's dealt with this very rare illness... in addition to losing her husband/manager will bring in more of an audience too. So many people have been fascinated to see how she's doing/coping with all she's faced.

 

And she's one of the biggest pop singers of all time. Words like "icon" and "legend" are overused these days. But Celine Dion actually is a pop music icon.

 

This documentary will hopefully educate/remind people why she's so amazing. Celine deserves her flowers... like Mariah has gotten in recent years.

I’ve worked on countless deals that never closed. Doesn’t mean I can’t put them on my resume if it’s relevant experience (and it always is).
