Am I the only one who really doesn't want to see Céline act?! I'm happy to see her get more exposure and really hopeful we might get a new track out of the soundtrack, but I'm pre-cringing already. I just don't think she has that talent - she's a born performer, not an actress. Her personality is too outsized for her to fit herself into a different character (many hugely successful musicians have this problem, e.g., Madonna - but she keeps trying, bless her heart), and subtlety is not exactly her forte. Céline was at a very different point in her global success (i.e., she didn't have it yet) when she did Des Fleurs Sur La Neige - her presence has only grown exponentially since then.

I'll happily be proven wrong, but I just don't see it. I doubt I'll even believe her when she's playing herself... :-D

Agreed with all of the above - the "acting" in most of her music videos leaves much to be desired - but I do think there are some things she could pull off very well. Like a movie musical. Something like a Chicago, Moulin Rouge, La La Land- type thing, that's more "magic realism" than serious dramatic acting. If not a triple threat, we know she is at the very least a double one, now that she has taken up dancing! I seriously think she can pull it off with the right role, coaching and direction. Who says Mamma Mia 3 can't have a kooky French aunt?

I think she can act quite well, she has done well imho up to now, and that is without extensive training.

I think she should do acting classes and especialy dialect classes. Her voice is the biggest thing holding her back, ironically.

I understand why we may see her accent as an issue but there are plenty of actors that have accents (other than English accents) and it hasn't affected their ability to portray emotions. In the latest Marvel movie for instance which has an all Chinese cast, only two of them don't have accents, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and some other movies she's done (including voice acting). As long as she is able to fix some diction problems like saying "Hhhonestly" or "usband" she shouldn't have a problem.

I think she'd be a good actress. The little scene at the end of the Ashes mv was well delivered by her. The commercial for Celinununu. These are but little glimpses of what she may be capable of and imo, there isn't an absence of talent. I won't say she's excellent because we've seen too little but I can see potential.

I believe in her :)

Oof, we can agree to disagree!

I've cringed every time I've seen Céline attempt to "act" - including the Ashes video. It has nothing to do with her accent; it's to do with her ability to convey any recognizably human emotion or experience with credibility. She over-acts everything - she can't help but exaggerate and give "pained emote-face" in everything she does. It's part of why along with her many accolades, she's also always been made fun of throughout her career - think SNL, etc.

It's partly a function of her complete lack of guile or irony, and the teasing is often done with great affection, but she's an easy target, nonetheless. None of that bothers me too much as a fan when it's related to her music career and associated performances/interviews, but it's a death-blow for acting a character other than "Céline Dion" (which, let's face it, is as much of a role as anything else).

Again, I'm fully willing to be completely wrong and be blown away by a future acting performance, but I'm not holding my breath. :)

Am I the only one who thinks she'd make a great VILLAIN?

You know what? I could kind of see that - as long as it's in a self-aware spoof kind of movie (Austin Powers, Johnny English or the like). Céline's brand of over-the-top kookiness could actually work well for a scenery-chewing, more-is-more kind of megalomaniacal uber-villain trying for world domination. No need to worry about her going too far in a role that's intentionally over-the-top to its core. :)

No, I would love that. She could be the next Bond villain, or in a Marvel/DC movie, or Deadpool 3. Imagine Deadpool making a reference about how she looks just like this singer he loves 😆

I can also see her easily fitting within period movies. She has a very classical look.

Well, we’ll see how good her acting in this movie.

Yes definitely ! Even Celine says she'd be perfect for a 'older vilain' type of character. I would totally see her in an evil fairy like Maleficient . You can tell she is really made for that type of role and every halloween she goes for it

Ah, so a villain in a period piece musical then! 😆

Think the Helena Bonham Carter character in Sweeney Todd.

I don't make the rules in Hollywod or claim it is a fair or just place. Just stating how things have historically gone. Music is much less gate-kept, but international opportunities and fame--particularly in the realm of serious dramatic acting roles--has been very rare for Quebec natives, especially French-accented ones. For whatever reason.

Celine's predicament in that it is quite hard to not think of her voice as her the person. That's why I said an acting/dialect coach is so needed.

Celine would be brilliant with the right project… like a John Waters / camp film.

Just imagine if John Waters took her under his wing and taught her everything about camp (that she doesn’t instinctively know already). Would we get “Serial Mom 2”? Or an original character? That would be wild! And it would be nearly impossible for critics to call it “bad acting” since it’s already campy by nature :-D

Some amazing acting performances have been given over the years from "non-serious" or "comedic" actors who really showed their true talent and range:

Like Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, Robin Williams acting career, and right now an actor from the Scary Movie film franchise is receiving big aclaim for his acting in the upcoming film Red Rocket. Jim Carrey, Monique, Cloris Leachman are also names that come to mind.

I’d love to see her as a heroine addict, or a really rough, down on her luck type in a movie. Awful greasy ragged hair, no make up- shock people through the visual to make her ‘not Celine Dion’. I think only then will she be taken seriously. If it’s a woman in a dress/gown, it’s My Heart Will Go On and it can’t be believable.

Because it can be either intentional OR unintentional, camp is a very, very hard word to define. Usually in Céline‘s case, it’s unintentional. Like, AND was very campy – especially the first couple of years (see photo). But the backwards tux is sort of intentionally campy. The “Miracle” album photo shoot is camp ( I’m going to call it unintentional?).

When something or someone is trying to pass as serious, but it is actually funny, THAT is camp. “It’s so bad, it’s good!” As almost a rule, anything melodramatic is camp. Eurovision is camp. Drag queens are camp. Joan Crawford, Liz Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Judy, Marlene, and nearly any gay icon has done something campy, if not made a career out of it. I can’t really think of any straight men who exemplify camp, but if anyone else can, please share!

If you’re still confused, here are some items I checked out from the local library to help further illustrate the concept:

Robbie Williams comes to mind - he's very knowingly played up his gay appeal and indulged in camp throughout his career. But his brand of camp is entirely intentional rather than the oblivious or so-bad-it's-good type.

He's also played with insecurity/bluster/ego/wounded/addiction/player/father/family man... his brand image is kind of fascinating in its variety - and all those facets have successfully co-existed to make up his public persona for 30 years.

This is from his Vegas show in 2019 - I went to the opening week and it was an uber-camp explosion - with a gigantic wink - while simultaneously very securely masculine. :)

There is an Instagram I really recommend people follow: Camporama. They featured Celine on it a few times recently. They post a lot of great stuff. And it would help to understand the concept.

For me, camp is glamour and/or theatrics done in a way that is not 100% literal and serious. But instead, to put on airs, for catharsis, drama, expression or entertainment. I think loud, bright, colours and genderplay are heavily interwoven into what camp is. BUT I am no authority.

Interestingly enough there is Quebec word relating to Celine a bit that is also kind of hard to define; quetaine.

This movie has potential to get popular. You guys really don't know how popular Priyanka is in India, if sue attends even one comedy show or talk show for this movie, a lot of people will at least hear this movie's name. And Celine... everyone knows who she is.

At this rate we might see her on screen before we see her on stage!

This is likely to get released around either Christmas or Valentine's right? So before she goes back to touring, and if last few months are any indication, before she shows her face in public.

Or perhaps they'll recruit her to do some film promo? Do we know if her role is substantial enough for that?
