An immense career and only 5 grammy awards is hard to believe, especially when the last one delivered to Celine is already 20 years old...

celine deserves more than any awards

...and she got a lot of flak for winning Album of the Year for FYI over Odelay, The Score and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

A lot of people point to that as the moment The Grammys jumped the shark.

Don't get me started on the Grammy's. It's insane they simply ignored her since her break in 2000! :ranting:

The least they could have done, was give a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for A New Day Has Come, I mean look at 2003: SERIOUSLY Britney best pop vocal!? They are looking more at to what is popular, than actual quality:

2003 Norah Jones "Don't Know Why" (winner)

Sheryl Crow — "Soak Up the Sun"

Avril Lavigne — "Complicated"

Pink — "Get the Party Started"

Britney Spears — "Overprotected"

And it's embarrassing that P!nk and Madonna have the same amount of best pop vocals nominations as Céline  But you know that once Fergie was nominated this category is one big joke! And actually winning one for MHWGO, while that song does not match TPOL (Sheryl Crow won then with "All I Wanna Do") is kinda a slap in the face. I've said it before, I'll say it again, if Céline was American, she would have had much more nominations and wins! :glare:

Um, is that supposed to illustrate that Norah Jones was not a worthy winner that year? :wtf:

Because if so - um, sorry, but the other 4 don't come close. Norah was head and shoulders above the others and more than deserving.

No, I didn't say that :wtf:

I said that there were nominees that year that weren't worthy. AKA Pink, Avril & Britney  don't twist my words.

I don’t remember any of this...she was actually rather celebrated when she won that award. She gave a memorable performance of ABM, and she was met with thunderous ovation when she won Album of the Year.

Yeah I only remember complaints that 2 Canadian artists won the award in a row (Alanis and Céline)

Oh, it was written up a lot, and still is.

I mean, in just 2 seconds I found this, and just barely the tip of the iceberg:

"The Most Ridiculous 'Album of the Year' Winners in Grammy History

Winner: Celine Dion, Falling Into You Why it won: Despite being written off by critics as formulaic schmaltz, Dion was an unstoppable force. Falling Into You sold 32 million copies worldwide. What should have won: Take your pick from the other nominees: Beck's Odelay (too weird for Grammy voters), Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (too messy for Grammy voters) and The Fugees' The Score (too... hip hop, a genre which wouldn't take Album of the Year until Lauryn Hill won in 1999)."

10 Terrible Grammy Album of the Year Snubs

"4. Celine Dion’s Falling Into You over Beck’s Odelay and The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Easily the most infamous instance of the Grammys rewarding album sales over artistic integrity came in 1997 when Celine Dion’s collection of 16 future American Idol songs beat out two genre-defining classics."

The Grammy Awards' Dumbest Decisions of the Past 30 Years

In 1997, Celine Dion won Album of the Year for Falling Into You. She beat Beck's Odelay, the Fugees' The Score, Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack.

The Greatest Grammys Snubs of All Time

"The bummer about Céline Dion’s absolutely massive Falling Into You taking the ’97 Grammy for Album of the Year is that it’s quite possibly the most popular but least impactful album from that year’s entire crop of nominations. Beck’s Odelay was a collage of stoned slacker funk that still sounds innovative today, the Smashing Pumpkins’ Melancholy & the Infinite Sadness was a wistful, achingly beautiful double album that unapologetically cranked the angst dial to 19, the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack was both a showcase of Babyface’s writing skills, and an unimpeachable soundtrack packed with instant classics, and the Fugees’ The Score introduced the world at large (see: everyone who was not already a rap fan) to Lauryn Hill, with a collection of lyrical Jersey rap tinged with just the right amount of pop sensibility. Compared to all of these, Falling Into You was as boring as it could possibly get."

The Grammy Awards' 13 worst Album of the Year mistakes

"Don't let anyone tell you this isn't Dion's best album, but its competition was off the scale that year: Beck's "Odelay," the Fugees' "The Score," Smashing Pumpkins opus "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," and Babyface's "Waiting to Exhale" soundtrack. As both Beck and the Fugees' Lauryn Hill went on to win later, we'd give the edge on this one to the Pumpkins."

...and many, many more like it.

It was more the industry people that weren't too happy that a best-selling pop album (and by a Canadian) won for Best Album.

After that, no wonder why the Grammys stayed away from anything Celine. But time to get over it and nominate Celine again! :)

Interesting. I never knew there was so much upset over this win. I don’t think the album is “not artistic.” I think it’s actually her most coherent album, next to her self titled. Her vocals and interpretation were on point. Wow.

Yep. And this, just filed yesterday -

All 60 Grammy Album of the Year winners ranked from worst to best

"60. Celine Dion - 'Falling Into You' (1997) It had massive hits and huge sales, but Celine Dion’s “Falling Into You” seems more like a punch line these days, especially since it beat out landmark albums from Beck, The Fugees and Smashing Pumpkins in 1997."

...so yeah... they just ranked it dead last.

Hope she makes a redemption record and proves 'em all wrong!

(And by the way, I think the industry is more receptive of her as an artist than ever - critics are giving her renewed respect lately, especially as an entirely new generation of artists is now citing her as a major influence. The industry is realizing that, 'hey, there really was something there... these songs stood the test of time'.

So actually, I think she's in better position than ever to get critical & award recognition. You could see early stages of that with Ashes - it was generally very well received, and not just for the video.)

Nah, no prejudice against Canadians. Alanis picked up every award in sight. Sarah McLachlan Diana Krall, Shania all did great around that time, too.

So no, it was Celine and her "Hallmark card" songs.

She was always celebrated for her vocals, but derided for her choice of material (and in many cases, rightfully so.)

And yes, all those other nominees that year were absolutely genre defining, seminal records. So I'm not surprised the industry had a meltdown when Celine won over Beck, The Fugees, Pumpkins et al.

i think that Celine is as genre defining as anybody. It was a great record. Just an opinion.

but let’s face it - Ashes is the biggest track on that album and well known now. A shame the song was not nominated but if deadpool wins we can say Celine won!

yes it´s a shame big time and I hope that deadpool wins, but we can´t say ashes isn´t/wasn´t successfull, even if it´s not nominated. Alone the fact that it´s well known by the general public is a big success in my opinion

I wish she'd make the flight down to surprise us and present something... keep the momentum going from these last few weeks.

Alas, doubt it's going to happen.

FIY deserved "Album of the year 1996" . Come on, everyone remember it. The Score from the Fugees was also great, but I glad Celine won :).
