"Ashes" - from Deadpool 2 - Official Topic

FIY deserved "Album of the year 1996" . Come on, everyone remember it. The Score from the Fugees was also great, but I glad Celine won :).

I can't say I agree.

Yes, it certainly has some iconic, standout tracks that have proven to stand the test of time and be more than worthy, even more so with the benefit of hindsight.

But it also has some terrible formulaic pap on there, too, and the album as a whole is nowhere near the level or artistic originality that was so apparent on Odelay or Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

This was clearly a case of Grammys going for what's popular - and fair enough. Not doing so is what The Oscars are increasingly being criticized for - should they reward truly original arthouse films that break boundaries but barely make a dent at the office? Or the billion-selling generic blockbusters? Hence the new Popular Film category - which was announced... and then shot down.

Valid arguments on both sides. And therein lies the dilemma. Our film & music consumption has become so fragmented, these awards have become increasingly irrelevant. They are no longer the monoculture moments they used to be - and in a way that's a great thing; we all have access to so much more great content now, and artists from all over the world, from all cultures and languages, finally get to shine. But it's sad in a way, too, because there aren't really any truly generation-defining works of art anymore. There are plenty of people these days who've never seen any of the Oscar-nominated films, and plenty who've never heard the Grammy-nominated albums/ artists.

We're never going to have another "Beatles on Ed Sullivan" moment ever again.

P.S. Anyways, The Grammys still apologizing to Beck! :giggle:

Well, it was the best-selling album of the year -

The Greatest Showman tops list of biggest selling albums of 2018

"Film soundtrack broke a record previously held by Adele by spending more weeks at number one in the UK than any other album."

‘The Greatest Showman’ Soundtrack Was the Highest-Selling Album of 2018 by Far

""A Star Is Born" came in second, but only sold half as many copies."

‘Greatest Showman’ Rules the Soundtracks Chart for 2018… And All Album Sales, Period

"The two top selling albums in any genre were the "Greatest Showman” and “Star Is Born” soundtracks."

Anyone who had a pulse on soundtracks for this year’s GRAMMYS would have known “The Greatest Showman” was going to win. It even had a “Reimagined” version released. The “Deadpool 2” soundtrack was good, but nowhere near mindblowing.

Just to add to my earlier post - I think the non-televised aspect of these shows is still hugely important. What happens before the big TV show - often for weeks - is where the industry truly lives.

In Canada, for instance, there's an entire Juno Week, with songwriters circles, conferences, workshops, educational & industry events where artists can meet, collaborate, shake hands with people who can advance their careers, be recognized by the industry.

Same for the Grammys - the pre-televised show going on right now and the artists it celebrates, and the events leading up to it - all these things are hugely important for actual working, middle-class musicians of all genres.

But for the "big awards" and the televised spectacle, it's much more about campaigning, timing, industry politics, and all sorts of factors extraneous to the music itself.

And the show itself, as we've witnessed once again with the Ariana / Ken Ehrlich drama this week (or Lorde last year), is another can of worms.

And then of course the entire thing loses legitimacy when top-selling artists don't even bother submitting their work or don't bother showing up when they win - like Drake, who didn't submit More Life for the Grammys a few years ago, and didn't submit Scorpion for the Junos this year.

Anyway, I do think there are more awards in Celine's future - the industry is seeing her as more of an artist now than merely a vocal acrobat packaged by industry execs to reach the broadest possible audience. I think in recent years she has done some of her best and most inspired work, and I get the sense she's not afraid to take risks, which bodes well.

And neither was the greatest showman....

All its success was based off of one song (This is Me) the actual movie was panned and every other song got like no attention

I disagree it has at least three great songs - this is me, never enough and the endsong. for that I understand it won. The movie is full with great music.

Of course it will win. All songs from that album are original compared to Deadpool 2 soundtrack. Only one and that’s Céline Dion’s Ashes

Maybe in your town? But I have heard quite a few different songs off the album on the radio, and have also heard them in various TV programs from different countries.

Never Enough is more well known in my Country. Anyway I think TGS deserves to Win, I love Ashes, but the album soundtrack itself is like an ordinary compilation album.

Do you have facts to back up your statement? "Based off pf one song?" Sure This Is Me was it's biggest hit and biggest driver of its success, much the same way as MHWGO was for the Titanoc soundtrack. But a quick google search would reveal TGS soundtrack produced a couple hits of varying degrees of success. Aside from this is me, 3 other songs entered the Billboard Hot 100 (Neither of Deadpools 2 new songs - including Ashes - even entered much less make a dent on that chart). And lets not talk about in other countries were it set and broke numerous records (including the long-standing one by the Beates in the UK). So commercially, the album easily beats the 4 other nominated albums.

How about criticially? Yes the movie was panned (but mainly for its story). If you really sift through all the reviews and read them till the end, you'll notice they will slam the movie but almost always make an exception and say the only good thing about the film was the music. Critics loved the soundtrack (again lets not confuse this with the movie itself) and this is me was nominated for numerous awards, Oscars, Grammys, and Golden Globe (which it won). So check also on the "criticial" front.

So basically, a commercial and critical favorite. The four other nominated albums might have achieved the same but not in the same level that TGS was able to achieve.

Like most of you guys here, Im the biggest Celine fan but lets give credit where it is due. The Greatest Showman was simply superior to The Deadpool Soundtrack and he three other nominees. Just accept that.

(And lets not even go the "movement" that the album and This Is Me got started, with the song evolving into an anthem of empowerment for a lot of people and sectors. Lets admit it its something Ashes and neither of the songs in the 3 other nominated albums were able to pull off.)

You said it all... And it only takes just one great song to lead a movie to win the award, and The Greatest Showman with This Is Me got all the ingredients. Besides the lyrics having a component of anthem, Ashes was nowhere near the buzz this song has made everywhere :) Edited by Javito

I didn't know This Is Me was a hit, because the only hits here from TGS is only Never Enough, it reminds me that not every US #1 billboard is well known outside US

Yes, it was huge. It was particularly huge in the UK, US, Japan, Australia (all major music markets). It's 2018's biggest-selling album in the UK and the US (pure album sales)... And in the UK, eight of the 11 songs from the soundtrack entered the singles chart. That's 8 out of 11, that's basically the entire album!

More than a year since its release in late 2017, the album is still inside the UK Top 10 all those consecutive weeks -- 28 of those weeks at No. 1. Just 2 weeks ago, it was still No. 1. And according to estimates, it could return to No. 1 again next week. It's so big in the UK, they have asked Hugh Jackman to open the Brit Awards even if the album was not nominated in any of the categories.

Anyway, i'm going off topic. All this to say that the success of The Greatest Showman should not be underestimated. I love both TGS and the Deadpool albums anyway.

I think it's quite different when a song is "performed" in a movie. Imagine if the Ashes video would be an actual scene in the movie. It would have been a monster hit!! :D Let's hope Ryan includes Celine in the next movie! Edited by Xpresso

I think this is very unlikely to happen ... but it would be absolutely brilliant.
