The René Angélil legacy

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

An article I just read said "The back of the program featured a candid throwback shot of Dion and Angélil looking happy together"

Do we know what shot this was?

The article goes on -

'It [the program] also included a heartfelt letter from Stéphane Laporte, the director of Dion’s Las Vegas show.

“René doesn’t demand respect. He does better than that, he offers it,” he wrote. “Because the most respected man of show business is the one who respects others the most. His genius is to think of everything, to never forget anyone.”

Laporte also spoke about the incredible bond Angélil shared with Dion.

“Never did one single love matter more in the world than that of René’s for Céline,” Laporte wrote. “And Céline’s for René. The lover is no longer. But the love is always there. In her. In his kids. In everything this man loved. His love is everywhere.”'

It was my favorite picture from TC tour book. Celine hugging Rene with that black brace on her hand

Who was the person in the wheelchair?

It was a relative of Rene and Celine who was the ring barer for them 21 years ago at their wedding. I don't remember the name, but I am sure someone will help me out here.

Seeing that burial plot photo... wow, so ... final. Sad.

I wonder if Celine will truly stay in Vegas until 2019 now. It was always Rene's thing. He's always loved it there, the gambling, "le showbizness" there, as he would say. But how strong is Celine's connection to it going to be, now that he's gone? It'll be so lonely. I know she has her people there now, and Michel and Linda, but still - it's so far from home. And so far from where Rene now is... I wonder if she'll keep the Montreal home after all. And move back there in a few years. Or at least visit far more often.

Also, I realized how Rene picked songs from all 3 of Celine's major French-language collaborators - 3:20 (Eddy), L'amour existe encore (Luc) and PQTME (JJG). Ever thoughtful, to make everyone feel important.

My guess is Celine will move back to Canada, when her Vegas contract ends. I just see that happening.

Ok I'm gonna sound selfish but I know Rene wanted her to go till 2019 in Vegas but honestly if I was her I would just go till the initial contract ended (what was it 2017?) film the show release it on dvd and then do the summer tour and then go on a break. That's what I'd suggest right now. But who am I to say? I'm just forming my opinion based on the last two days

WOW seeing this just wow really made it feel real

I wouldn't normally paste an entire article - but this one's sweet. From Toronto Star.

Celine Dion’s heartbreak: If only the public could share it

They came to bid farewell to Rene Angelil, but the hundreds who lined the barricades at the basilica in Montreal also came to offer love to their dear Celine Dion.

MONTREAL— No love is eternal. This is why all love is tragic.

So while they lined the barricades around Notre-Dame Basilica in Old Montreal by the hundreds on Friday afternoon and on into the evening to mourn the loss of one of Québec’s most successful entertainment impresarios, they were also there to mourn the end of the very public love story shared for more than two decades by René Angelil and Céline Dion.

The heartbreak on Dion’s face as she finally exited the funeral service for her husband of 21 years—the husband she wed in that very same cathedral in December of 1994—was tangible enough to reduce the most hardened and cynical reporter to jelly. She’s known Angelil, who died on Jan. 14 at age 73 after a long fight with throat cancer, since she was a teenager and built one of the most lucrative and globally popular careers in modern pop music with his help well before she married and had three children with him, and she’s never made any secret of her devotion to him.

So, yes, they came to bid farewell to Angelil on Friday, but they also came to look in on their beloved Céline — also reeling from the death of her brother, Daniel Dion, a mere two days after Angelil’s passing — and offer her the best approximation of a group hug they could. Because everyone can relate to the loss of a love. All the wealth and celebrity in the world can’t save you from love’s final, brute irony.

“It’s very sad. I remember watching documentaries and shows when I was in my teens, I guess, because she’s not much older than me and I just remember the love they had,” observed Krista Scott, who wandered up to the basilica with her daughter while in Montreal from Ottawa. “It was pretty amazing. I’m not the hugest fan, but something like this is just sad. I don’t know. It’s just a Canadian thing, I guess.”

Cecilia Kenny and a couple of friends were pressed against a fence overlooking the black-suited comings and goings on the Notre Dame steps a good hour before the service began at 3 p.m., huddled against a cold that was reasonably manageable while the sun shone, but was starting to numb the extremities when the funeral procession eventually emerged from the church some two-and-a-half hours later.

The ladies had come hoping to catch “a beautiful mass” on the big screen parked to the left of the cathedral entrance and to hear a few Céline Dion tunes piped out over the external P.A., but also to show their respect for a man who did a lot to support Québecois arts and culture over the years. As Kenny pointed out, even Angelil’s state funeral was employing a lot of people from Québec on Friday. Not bad for a chap who built a fortune for himself and his bride from the ground up.

“Maybe he was not perfect, but we look at him like he’s perfect,” said Anna D’Olimpio, squashed in next to Kenny at the front of the crowd. “We see the glamour. They started from zero, both of them.”

“He didn’t have it easy, you know? Nor did Céline. Don’t forget, as a baby she was sleeping in a drawer,” added Kenny. “It’s a sad end, but on the other hand, she’s had a good life and now she has a career and she can sing if she wants to or she can stay home and be with the kids or whatever. She’ll never be out on the street. Money is not a problem, which is good when you have a family. Of course, her heart is broken. But she’s young. She might meet somebody else. She can have a second chance. And why not? She took good care of him.”

Marcel Bergeron was easily visible amidst the crowd, standing as he was beneath a Fleur de Lis flag that he’d brought along to the basilica. His reasons for being there were slightly less sentimental, but still rooted in love.

“René Angelil and his wife loved Québec, and Céline Dion is known internationally but she was born in Québec,” he said. “This is important because Québec exists and there are people who love it and recognize it, and I think it’s important to underline that.”

As Dion, flanked by her sons René-Charles, Eddy and Nelson, appeared at the top of the basilica steps with Angelil’s casket, the sun setting in the west, applause broke out from three directions. It was probably the toughest applause she’s ever had to face, and maybe applause wasn’t entirely appropriate in that situation. But people wanted to help their Céline and that was the best they could do.

Ok, please come on... there won't be a DVD!!!! :o

Not of the funeral!!!! Of the "Celebration of life"-concert ... maybe ...

And it's not what I want ... just what I assumed that COULD be ...

I'm sure they will take the right decisions - or René defined that too.

This is Jacques Dion, brother of Celine. Born 1955. He composed the melody for "Ce n'était qu'un rêve"

His son is Jimmy, who carried their rings 1994 and yesterday.

Do we know any details of the "Celebration of Life" event? Are we sure it's going to be a concert and not just a reception with someone speaking about Rene? If it's going to be on February 3rd, that's not much time to plan, sell tickets, etc...

As far as I know nothing offical had been published yet. Some (unreliable) sources say it would be a tribute concert. Others say it will be a "gathering".

The only thing I'm sure is, that they have already the plan of it - or maybe René also planned that too.

the word 'unfinished' that she used in that note makes me think that maybe she will do everything that is planned for a present moment and then I'm not 100% sure she will continue, like for real, I cant imagine right now her singning any song

I can't see her stop singing, never. It's not what Rene would want her to do. He wants her to carry on, that's why he said she must go back last August. Celine will do it for him, after all these years of them working to where she is today, she loves singing way to much.

he thanked everyone for being there and also those who was watching around the world and shared their grief. Then he said that he was lucky to be born in a family where there is a lot of love. he finished french part of his speech with: "with my mom and with you, Dad, I have learned what matters most in life: the family" :innocent:

Thank you :)
