René Angélil, husband of Céline Dion, has died, his rep confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE on Thursday.

 

"Rene Angelil, 73, passed away this morning as his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer," the rep said in a statement. "The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time."

René Angélil, husband of Céline Dion, has died, his rep confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE on Thursday.

 

"Rene Angelil, 73, passed away this morning as his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer," the rep said in a statement. "The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time."

 

Angélil, who guided Dion's career as her manager and mentor, is survived by the couple's three children – René-Charles, 14, and5-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy – and his adult children from a previous relationship, Anne-Marie, Patrick and Jean-Pierre.

Angélil battled three bouts of cancer.

 

"We have asked [doctors] many times, how long does he have, three weeks, three months? René wants to know," Dion said in a candid interview with theUSA TODAY" in August. "But they say they don't know."

 

The "My Heart Will Go On" singer added that she promised to keep Angélil's dying wish.

 

"I'll say, 'You're scared? I understand. Talk to me about it' … And René says to me, 'I want to die in your arms.' Okay, fine, I'll be there, you'll die in my arms.

And the singer said she would keep a brave face until the end.

 

"You can have your shaking knees at the end, but when someone you love falls and needs help, it's not time to cry," she said. "Afterwards, sure. But not yet."

We all knew this day would come, but with Celine on such a high in Vegas, I think we all assumed things must have been more stable behind the scenes than they actually were. She fooled us all and saved us from the pain she was living.

 

RIP Rene, you are a hero in our eyes. You will never be forgotten.

 

 

 

I assume the 2 remaining shows of this leg, on 16th & 17th, will be cancelled. We will have to wait and see.

My condolences to Céline and the family. I had a chance to meet René (and Céline) in Nice, France during the TC tour and I will never forget it. A real gentleman! RIP René.

Even when we know the end is near, it is never any easier when the end arrives. I'm lost for words. As much as Celine has been a part of our lives, so has Rene. We connected with them on a personal level because they wanted to share their lives with us, the fans. Just as Celine was with Rene until the very end, so have us, the fans, in spirit.
