"AEG Live Senior Vice President John Nelson recently told me what an avid fan of comedy was the late Rene Angelil, who engineered the deal that brought his wife, Celine Dion, to Caesars Palace. Angelil especially loved Dom DeLuise, and one night decades ago saw the great comic actor playing blackjack at the old MGM Grand (now Bally’s).

 

Angelil pulled a $100 bill from his wallet and a Sharpie from his pocket and, between hands, asked DeLuise to sign it. The actor tucked the $100 into his own wallet, pulled out a $1 bill, signed it and handed it back. A pricey autograph and a priceless tale."

To me Rene, was the man who discovered the goose that makes the golden eggs! I never thought there was true romance or passion between them, maybe just in the beginning of their relationship in the late 80s. To be clear, I believe that they loved each them, noone can doubt that, but I always had the feeling that it was mostly love between 2 people who understand and respect each other and have a perfect business relationship, because they needed each other. Celine's quotes nowadays 'about feeling free now', 'or being the boss of her life now' start making sense and proofing this belief I have. So to me, the legacy of R.A. is that he created the most famous singer Quebec will even know.

Well I would not say there were actors. I do believe there was love behind the closed doors of their home, but I always had a feeling that they had some sort of agreement between them and now Celine can do whatever she wants.

That’s crazy of course there was a romance and love between them. I think Celine gets lost in translation in what she says sometimes in English interviews, because it’s not the case in her French interviews. I think she means “free” in the way of her career not her personal life, I think this is also why we saw the departure of Aldo, I think Celine feels if Renè isn’t the manager of the career than nobody is good enough to make those decisions besides her. That’s how I read it at least.

 

Definitely means free in terms of her career. In my opinion she was happy to let him take the reins of her career because it's what she was used to since he became her manager. She might have felt awkward taking more control after they got married because then he'd have no power in their relationship and that can cause issues, especially since she has such a strong personality. Once he passed away maybe she felt there was no need for anyone to manage her career. She finally had the chance to do things as she wanted. I don't think it's a matter of no one else being good enough but more her wanting freedom and a team to support and help her as opposed to one person to manage/control her career.

I think Celine and Rene are the greatest love story of all time. Of course they had their struggles, as we all do. In my mind she loves him tremendously and he was/is/ will always be a huge part of her life. However, I think she's realized their age gap more in recent years than she did in the past. And that's what she means by finally feeling free. She's said recently he was a bit more conservative than she was....from a different era. Now we have her involvement with Celinununu, etc. She's finally able to make more business decisions. And to me....she never really experienced be a 20-something when she was in her 20's. She jumped right into a relationship, marriage, kids, etc. Now that she's not married she's getting to experience some of these things now. Hence we see her at Omnia in Vegas, dancing the night away, and at various concerts, etc. I get what she says now by saying her life has essentially started over. I think she will always love and respect Rene. Without him she may never have had the career she's had. But I have to say I'm loving this new era and seeing her evolve.

 

I think the end of Vegas is in a way the end of the Rene era. As she said, he will always remain, but we're now entering the Celine era and what she really wants to do. And there's definitely a bit of freedom in that for her.

And really sad about having missed the Marc Dupré episode of En direct de l'univers. They don't really replay these, do they... sigh.

 

Seems both Anthony and Stella performed on the show. (You can also see them at the piano with Garou, below).

 

This aired on Oct 5th so I wonder if Celine was meant to be there, since she was in Montreal at the time, but had to pull out because of her illness. If so, how sad. So many friends and family there.

Rene was the best manager. Do you think they can do what Rene can do. Watching AND secrets.. Rene was so strong, confident to gamble everything just to deliver a great show that it became the best residency show. I’m just amazed and having so much respect for him.
