"Courage" album - Official Topic

I am experiencing something with Courage that I never experienced before... I got into the music of Celine back in 2005 - I used to love songs from LTAL and ANDHC - but it was then, in 2005, that I became a fan. I immersed myself into her music: I would consume her songs non-stop, I would look for more, I would buy her albums, I would search info about them on Wikipedia, and once I knew her English catalog by heart, I moved on to explore her French music. And she became an even greater artist in my eyes! :)

In terms of me being a fan, Taking Chances was the first major release of Celine. I remember hating the album cover - still do - and several songs felt different to her previous recordings. I did not quite enjoy this record - only certain songs in it. I also remember checking the charts back in 2007 and 2008 and I was feeling somewhat sad that she was under-performing. Or at least this is how I felt. Disappointed. Pretty much the same happened with LMBTL. I disliked the album cover - still do - and only liked few songs that I listened for few months after the release. I barely listen to them now. Much like TC, I felt LMBTL was a mixed bag, crafted to appeal to a wide audience, but losing its artistic direction and coherence because of that. I have to say though that things were very different for me when it came to her French releases. Sans Attendre was an album I loved and years later she released Encore Un Soir which I loved even more. In the meantime, I discovered D'elles that despite certain flaws in terms of interpretation and production, still has a place in my heart.

Irrespective of her solid French records, I was still feeling that her English albums were lacking though. So I had higher expectations from Celine. I wanted her to deliver an English album that I would very much be proud of. So now with Courage, I am experiencing for the first time this happiness of being a Celine fan and consuming brand new material from her that I absolutely LOVE! I am embracing songs that were brought to life now! In the present moment! It is as if I am witnessing something big for her career. Dionaissance? For sure! She finally did it for me, guys! She delivered a modern album filled with meaningful songs! She stepped out of her comfort zone, which by definition means progress. This is not album made to appeal to an audience as broad as possible, it is an album crafted so that Celine re-invents herself and delivers the messages she wanted to deliver. IMO, Courage is a career milestone.

On a side note, my Top 5 songs at the moment are: Perfect Goodbye, Nobody's Watching, Change My Mind, Say Yes, Falling In Love Again. I am a happy fan!

the forum needs to make the haha button :w00t:

Attention Toronto fans! There is a release party on Nov 15:

https://www.gladston...on-dance-party/

That's not a release party. That's the Celine dance party which happens every year at around this time, and that I've been posting about here for 2 or 3 years now, as it's become a bigger deal ever since the Celinasiisanc and always gets quite a bit of coverage in Toronto's LGBT community. (See here or here for this year's edition.)

Nothing to do with the album or Team Celine / Sony, though this year's edition happens to coincide with the release date.

Seriously some of the most preposterous posts I’ve ever seen on this forum. Grow up. It’s far from profane.

I can’t believe how someone can find it offensive! People are so hypocrites!

Well so far those are more or less the same critics as 20 years ago 😌😁 Only pop, generic, messy, over done.

+ Le matin dimanche (Switzerland, and I made the picture ahahah, sorry because it's not very good. I will try to translate, but it's a good article, usually "Le matin dimanche" are not so kind with famous singers...)

On this FB page you can also vote for Imperfections VERSUS FOMO (we'll try to post "battles" about the album the next weeks, one more this week between Lying down VERSUS Courage, and from the 15th the news songs... if you have any idea how to put songs by 2, just tell me ^^)

***I speak French, sorry for my mistakes in English. I would be very happy if you write me a private message to tell me when I make mistakes, as I want to improve my English***

I do agree with the last part of that article. Courage is still not the great album that her discography misses in English. Like D Eux is for her French catalog. It can’t be as long as she she does not lock up in the studio to work with one small team from A to Z.

This being said this is finally her best attempt to realize an honest and modern pop album while remaining quite coherent and a bit adventurous. That s for sure her best material since FYI/LTAL.

I think the album would have benefit from having less songs. I haven't listened properly yet and I'm keeping the bonus tracks for Friday so I can't give a proper review yet, but I think the album would be much more cohesive without FOMO and Baby (even the title is so so). But having in mind the huge number of writers and producers, they have done a pretty good job, it is a solid record, just think without those two songs would be even better.

The critic of USA today said that Dion threw everything on the wall to see what sticks. Well... not that positive, is it?

You're picking one piece of the reviewing and running with it. Overall, look at the title of their review. It's a good review.

Well, it's a phrase used when you kind of do a bit of everything. I don't think it's that negative either since they enjoyed the album. Also can you really say she didn't do that? She did a few genres that were a bit not-so-fitting to the album and also did quite a lot of songs.

Honest, grandiose and endearingly messy, "Courage" is Dion throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. There's plenty here for new and longtime fans to latch onto, the most important takeaway being that after a trying few years, the ever-resilient Queen Celine will be OK.

Reading the entire last statement, it seems like they find it charming that it's sort of so honest and 'messy' due to the emotions that come with what she went through.

Among all these reviews, perhaps the closest to my own take of the album would have to be this:

https://www.journaldequebec.com/2019/11/11/une-bonne-dose-de-courage

This review also confirms that that lyrics in NW is indeed "party like a BELIEBER."

Another observation from all the reviews:

- most of them really hear James Bond in LND

- and these reviews explain why Sony or TeamCeline chose Imperections as the radio/first single: because they are unanimous in saying Imperfections is one of the best if not the best song in the album. TeamCeline obviously got advance copies of their reviews or surveyed the critics after, and found out that the praise for Imperfections was unanimous.

Regardless of that, they basically say "she's gonna be fine" with this effort. I would say it wasn't too glowing or anything but it's not like they hated the album. Just that it seemed a bit generic at times but really was stronger when she was more personal with songs.

Still this sentence sounds very negative to me.

No, it’s you who sound negative. Literally, the title of that review called the album ‘triumphant’.
