(You might recall Kevin Fallon and Rachel Handler have covered Céline in the past, including the premiere of Aline at Cannes.)

Lots of fawning over Céline in this article:

“This is a show that's all about celebrating Céline Dion as much as possible.”

[…]

"I literally act as if I am a quirky ingenue that has descended from a French Canadian planet," Mindelle, 37, tells PEOPLE, of how she channels Dion. "I pretend I'm in utter disbelief the entire time, but I'm incredibly grateful to be there. And I have this joie de vivre of a child who's discovering a world for the first time."

"What is so wonderful about Céline is that she's so passionate about life and she's so happy and so grateful to be living it," Mindelle says. "And so I really, really try to embody that as much as humanly possible."

Of course, there's also the iconic "Céline-isms" that Mindelle throws in every now and again, including her signature smirk and iconic chest-beat. The actress tells PEOPLE she studied videos of Dion — like her Live in Las Vegas: A New Day, or a fan-made competition clips called "Céline Dion Is Amazing" — and often repeats banter from the singer word for word.

"We quote actual lines Céline has said to the audience from her concerts, or things she's said in interviews," explains Mindelle, who co-created and wrote the musical with costar Constantine Rousouli and director Tye Blue. "We open Act Two with 'Who Let The Dogs Out' — something she randomly started singing in a backstage video we found. And I would say only one person in every show understands that reference, but it doesn't matter because we put that in there for that that one person."

"This is a show that's all about celebrating Céline as much as possible," Mindelle adds. "There are some very niche parts, but true fans of hers will appreciate them."

[…]

“ The thing that gives me the greatest anxiety with this entire thing is not acting it or the fact that I wrote it, but how I sound," Mindelle, a veteran of Broadway hits like Sister Act, tells PEOPLE. "It's Céline Dion, you know what I mean? She's the greatest singer in the world and I'm just a little musical theater girl from Pennsylvania who grew up idolizing her. She's my absolute icon... what if I didn't get it right?"

To get prepared for each show, Mindelle still watches videos of Dion. "It's like my meditation to get me into the show," Mindelle says, joking that clips of the Canadian songstress are "the only things" that pop up on her Instagram feed. "I'm listening to her constantly, all her riffs, all her interviews. I call it my daily 'Céline Inspiration.' And it's really helped me get over the fear of impersonating her, because I really was so scared of not doing her justice. It makes me so happy that it seems to be resonating with people."

[…]

Dion herself has yet to see the show, but her manager and publicist have attended, Mindelle says.

So what would Mindelle do if Dion does, in fact, show up one day? "Faint, probably," the actress jokes.

"It would be such a dream," Mindelle shares. "And I think that she would love it because she would see that it is such a celebration of her. I mean, we wrote it because we were literally obsessed with her and Titanic. I can't imagine she wouldn't feel the joy and love we have for her."

Can someone explain that show to me? What is this about? Are they singing Celine songs on the Titanic?

It starts with Céline barging into a Titanic museum tour and claiming she was actually on board the ship (or perhaps it was a dream from Covid fever?). Then she begins to set up the story & introduce the characters. From there, it is essentially a parody of the film’s plot that incorporates Céline’s songs during the most iconic scenes - which she’s always inserting herself into.

It’s a small cast, so there are a few people who portray multiple characters. For instance, Frankie Grande plays “Victor Garber as Thomas Andrews” but he also plays the Captain —who, while tripping on ecstasy and singing “I Drove All Night”, accidentally rams the ship into an iceberg played by “Tina Turner” who is singing “River Deep, Mountain High.”

If that doesn’t give you a clearer idea of the show, then I don’t know what will!

It's basically a Celine jukebox musical - all Celine songs (with the exception of Who Let the Dogs Out / Who Let Celine Out from...well, I think we all know :giggle: )

They've got the steamy hand-on-windshield scene, the ship breaking in half & guy falling on propeller scene (with super low-budget, cast-made props! :-D ), Leo changing his name to Rene and learning poker, fun Celine signage (see my post from back in June when I saw it). Excellent singing & an audience sing-along. The writers, producers & cast clearly all worship Celine (and post about her on their socials all the time), and it shows.

It's gotten lots of word-of-mouth praise and some big names coming out to see it (like Andrew Lloyd Webber or the actual Victor Garber last week - fun, because he's a character in the show, played by Frankie Grande).

I feel that now that it's been extended through Feb 19th, if Celine is well enough to reemerge and participate in It's All Coming Back to Me movie promo, she may well be in NYC in Feb and if so, I wouldn't be surprised if she went to see it. Many on her team have (Pepe and David Foster loved it, her publicist and management reportedly, too).

Song list is: A New Day, All by Myself, Beauty & the Beast, I Drove All Night, I Surrender, I'm Alive, If You Asked Me To, MHWGO, River Deep Mountain High, Seduces Me, Taking Chances, Tell Him, The Prayer, To Love You More, You and I, Where Does My Heart Beat Now, Who Let the Dogs Out.

P.S. This interview with the stars & co-writers pretty much sums it up:

& Juliet is now on Broadway.

(As a reminder, this is the Max Martin jukebox musical that features TTWII.)

Reviews are starting to come in for & Juliet, and many call out TTWII. From NYT:

"Indeed, it’s Anne [Hathaway] who provides most of the wit, not just verbal but philosophical. And it’s [betsy] Wolfe’s performance — capped with a roof-raising rendition of the Celine Dion hit “That’s the Way It Is” — that gives the show its heart, an organ too often unheard from in musicals entirely focused on the ear."

Meanwhile, Titanique transferring to its new, fancy home on Nov 20th. A lot of the cast has turned over, but Marla, Constantine and Frankie still there.

Yet more Titanique coverage, in another lengthy interview with the creators.

“How Céline Dion Musical ‘Titanique’ Became the Hottest Show in New York”

Lots of Céline love throughout, like -

“Beyond her singing, fans love her for her kookiness and her open-hearted, that signature Céline personality. How much was that part of your vocabulary?

Blue: It’s huge. What I tell to people who are coming to the show, is that this character is an alien who has been gifted to this planet with supersonic powers coming out of her throat, which is what machinates this entire experience into existence. She’s so kind. She’s so humble and has the biggest heart. We’ve leaned on that in how we present this, because we want it to be a love letter to her and how she behaves. I feel like we’re like brand ambassadors. I want it to feel like it would feel if she was in the show. No cruelty.“

Not Céline-related this time, but her contemporaries are all over Broadway at the moment as well. Mariah is now a producer and there’s a Britney musical in the making.

I never noticed just how many producers are tacked on to film and theatrical works. Titanique should hire Celine as a producer :-D

I mean… in many cases you can get a producer credit just by providing some funds towards a production.

In one of my prior jobs, one of our clients did just that. She “produced” a number of films, but all she really did was minority fund them and read the scripts (and that’s how I got to see a bunch of scripts, including the one for that Callas movie Céline was attached to - because she had her advisors (i.e. me) read the scripts and provide script notes for her 😄)

Seems like a way to shoehorn people into recieving a boost for their CV...and/or to get a nomination for award :giggle:

Titanique has its “re-opening night” at the new theatre tonight. Calling it a Céline-ebration.

Sad Céline will likely never get to see this.

Oh, and I don’t recall anymore if I posted this (think so, in another thread?) but this is from Thursday.

I wonder if this is still a dream of her. To play that role.

I wonder how far they were into this dream.

Well, Angelina is the latest actress attached to it so maybe it’ll finally see the light of day?

“But Titanique is more than just a joke. The show is a beautiful tribute to Dion and the immeasurable impact her catalogue of songs has made on music.

Hits like "Taking Chances," "The Prayer," "Tell Him," "Beauty and the Beast," "I Drove All Night," "To Love You More," "A New Day Has Come," "All By Myself," "Because You Loved Me" — and yes, "My Heart Will Go On" — pop up throughout the evening, each fittingly nudging the story along while reminding fans of just how great of an artist Dion is.”

I had seen it once but didn’t realize large chunks of it are improvised. Need to go again!

“Part of the appeal, said Ty Hanes, 29, a musical theater actor who has gone 13 times, is that no two performances are the same. He looks forward to seeing what Mindelle will do in the five-minute scene between Rose and Jack that she improvises every night (some of his favorites: a bit about a toenail falling off and a riff on Spam, the tinned pork product).

[…]

The musical, which announced its fourth extension last week and continues to sell out a majority of its performances, is set to close May 14, but Mindelle said an even longer run may be in the cards.“
