She's not a respected artist. She has been mostly critisized a lot by various people. I don't know why. I'm happy shes been in the game for 30 years. But I Bet they fear the fact that if she were to kick things into 100% hear, she would dominate everything like she did in the 90s. But we don't know the behind the scenes of the music industry. For all we know, they might not want her to succeed anymore??? idk.

I never said she was a respected artist, I said she was a respected vocalist - world of difference.

Céline Dion, music's greatest ever singer, the biggest-selling Canadian artist of all-time and most successful female live act ever - what's not to love?

Posted (edited)

I'll be ecstatic if she somehow manages 100k. LOL, and a month ago I was praying for 300k

Wayne, i'm confused about that HMV Canada chart article. It says it's the chart ending Nov 9th, but....we haven't come to Nov 9th yet, so is it in progress?

Is it possible the airing of Access Illimite will raise her sales in Quebec for tonight and tomorrow and thus she might overtake Eminem?

Why Eminem's figures are so high? Sorry but if Celine wasn't releasing an album now and I wouldn't read it hear, I wouldn't know that he is releasing something new... And more surprisingly why it's 700k+? IT's strange...

Eminem is big in the US and always has been. This album will sell a lot to especially since he is going back moreso towards how he rapped during the early slim shady era in his earlier albums. I listened to it last night and while it's a good album and had a few tracks I really liked it all sounded the same to me and I couldn't really tell when one track stopped and another started with some of the songs.

Dion's mainly columbia/sony. Marshal Mathers owns Shady records, and his albums also supported by two other labels. So technically its 3 to 1 ratio. If Celine owned like Sony for example? I think Renee would be having a media blitz at the moment.

Eminem has sold over 90m albums in the last 14 years - he's MASSIVE.

And rap audiences tend to be very loyal, hence the big opening weeks of Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, Lil Wayne etc. Eminem however has the added bonus of cross-cultural appeal and he seemingly appeals to fans of pop, rock, rap, hip-hop, R&B etc.

One could say his career paralleled Celines. Both started off in poor household and fought they way to the top. The 90s was dominated by pop and ballads, But the 00-13 its about rap. Celine has done a good job, shes the 2nd biggest selling touring artist and biggest sellling artist overall in the decade so far. Because she stays in vegas, her margains of revenue is higher. I really wish he sould consider a dion-eminem collaboration. The best rapper of the decade with the best voice. Music is an experiment right? lol

Her success of today rests on the success she achieved before year 2000. In the decade of 2003-2013, her most acclaimed success has been to be quoted as having a show in Las Vegas which lasted 5 years and had 3 million spectators, but if we talk in terms of the music and what she has achieved with that new music, we can say very little sorry . Her performing career has gone into one direction in this decade but her recording career has gone into a completely different way (thank God). Her concerts since 2003 are but an imitation of what she achieved between 1990-1999. The truth is that since 2003, she has barely brought new hits to her concerts, except those achieved in 2002 and the first single of 2003. Other than that, the "most successful and long career in music history" you speak of is the illusion of the career she built before 2000, because little efforts they've done to keep that career growing since 2003, and by her own merits (not the merits of the pre-2002 "My Heart Will Go On" singer).

Careful Davey, you're going into swampy fields with facts that not every fan here is ready to admit :innocent:

You know what I think of her Vegas adventure. To her it may be a chapter of her career that has provided stability and balance to her personal life. For the media and non-fans out there may be the dream project that every artist would love to achieve, having a successful show opening for consecutive years. But for a hard-die fan like me, who has followed her career for a decade and watched how she reached (and had all the requisites to keep at that top without much effort), Las Vegas is just a stain in the pages of her career. It has completely ruined her international career today.

That is not a drastic statement of me made from night to day.

In 2003, her arrival to the Colosseum of Caesars Palace was incredible. The world had the eyes on her, and it was exciting.

In 2004, after almost two hundred concerts in only one year, her voice began to suffer, and the playback story began. It was ok. She was young and she could handle it.

In 2006, people began to wonder where Celine Dion was, as the show was each time more and more time consuming and the news about her became scarce. She began to get sick with an inusual frequence never seen on her career before.

In 2007, it wasn't fun anymore. By the end of the show she was extremely skinny and she was tired, you could see that on her face. But the girl was happy because she was touring the world, she had a new album to promote and that would allow her to get some fresh air.

2011. Who knows what led her to go back to Las Vegas. I don't think the family balance was the only reason. Only God knows how much Caesars Palace has payed her to return with them. But a second show in the same place, and extended until 2019? That's going to kill her international career (if its not in its last steps).

But she wanted it. She wanted this to happen this way. She didn't want to tour with A New Day Has Come and show the world that she wasn't only the singer of cheesy ballads that everyone is labelling her today to be like. She didn't want to promote ANDHC and One Heart albums the way they deserved, because those albums HAD the material to put her on the spot through the main gate, but she didn't bet on that fresh material back then, and Sony's bad promotion didn't help either. She has closed too many doors staying in Vegas, and many wrong choices had been made since 2003, and some other important deals have been cancelled because of Vegas.

But she wanted it this way. That's the way it is!

All I hope now is that she keeps her passion for recording new music in the studio the more time the better, because only new albums can save her career from stagnation, since her concerts are in a deadlock to me (since years).

In my opinion, Celine's "decision" to stay in Vegas for so long (I use quotes because I think these things are to some degree decided ahead of time considering there are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake) is less about family and stability and more about maintaining a certain lifestyle without the creative risk that comes along with releasing new albums and then touring in support of them. That is, after all, her job. In total, during the 90's, she must have generated somewhere close to 2 billion dollars in gross album sales alone, and it is certainly true that she has made more money than any other entertainer on the planet over the past 10 years. This is the game Celine and Rene play - it is not about the fans, it is not about the music, it is about money. So long as she still makes tens of millions of dollars every year, they are doing something right. But Celine's integrity has vanished in the process. She is no longer respected as a great artist, she is looked upon as a brand, and brand value can and does diminish over time since it feeds off of creative integrity. The sad thing is, Celine has enough money now that she could literally retire and focus on writing songs, or she could dabble in any number of creative endeavors that would positively impact the quality of her music. She could also be resting her voice so that the millions of fans she has who cannot afford to come to Vegas get to hear her at her best when she releases albums. But she chooses not to. Why? It is at once because she is addicted to applause and to adoration and fame and everything that goes along with it, but it is also because she is fiercely competitive and refuses to "bow out" and no longer be a chart contender. It's just that the chart that mattered used to be the Hot 100, whereas now it is about ticket sales and the occasional album or fragrance. But let's not forget that Celine is a multibillion dollar industry and as such creative risks, of the sort that most serious artists take when they are creating music and perfecting their craft, have financial consequences; while the first Vegas show was a gamble, this one wasn't. And while this album seems like a risk, it is actually her most commercial album ever and seems to lack a coherent concept or sensibility. Everyone agrees that this album is her best in over a decade, and perhaps her coolest ever, but still, it is commercial, overproduced, uneven, rushed, lacking a coherent or compelling concept, and it only seems so good because her last few albums have honestly been terrible when measured against most other contemporary music. Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Lady Gaga will be more successful than Celine not because they got naked on TV, they are successful because they actually care about the music they are releasing. They are actively engaged in the creative process. Celine is not, and thus she does not deserve the level of success she hopes to achieve. Celine has been calling herself an artist for 30 years now; it's time she took that seriously. She needs to have a concept, she needs to say something, and it makes me sad that she would rather sing the same songs over and over again and get paid $250,000 a show than take risks on a daring and unconventional album that might not seem destined for #1. She talks about her songs as if she no longer cares about training her voice and just sings blah whatever and everyone says it's brilliant. Well, I'll be the first to say that while Celine seems to criticize the industry as a "yes place," she is actually surrounded by yes people who care more about royalties and sales figures and profit than the preservation of Celine's integrity as an artist. With this album she has tried to have it all, going in all directions simultaneously, and while it works remarkably well, it is not a creative strategy I respect, because it is no longer about the music, it's all just one perpetual promo campaign for a billion dollar enterprise that refuses to take true risks. She pandered to the new mainstream and failed, now what? When you choose to say nothing, you should not be surprised when nobody listens. Celine needs to listen to more music, personally reach out to songwriters, and curate her albums in response to a specific set of inspirations. She needs time to become inspired and explore her sense of self, what she finds beautiful and compelling in music. She does not win anyone's respect when she says she doesn't listen to anything besides Adele and Rihanna; she only further validates the false impression most people have of Celine's music, that she is a mindless puppet who sings whatever the corporate people want her to sing and says the same things in every interview and is maybe the least interesting and most boring person in the world, etc.

I quote celine's recent interview: actually im paraphrasing because my memory sucks......

"the music industry is YES PLACE!, It's like a drug that you can get high off us. Many years ago, I decided to sheild myself from that!"

She does write, but not for herself. I could see her as a producer for sure. She knows how to collaborate and she knows what to do! I think that she is great about it too. She'll stillbe singing by the time shes 60.s

is she a good singer? i think you don't understand what is Celine strenght. You want an Indie artist who seems to be inspired by world problems, choose someone else. But i 'll tell you this, indie doesn't care more than Celine, she just think she cares. Would she care, she would do something else.

I don't think the chart that mattered was the Hot 100. She racked up hits because people were interested in her music and bought the singles. Besides, several singles had limited availability and were deleted soon in their chart lives because the label made sure people bought the albums instead.

She has always stated that she didn't want a hit, she wanted a career.

Yes, I know that Las Vegas has made her a more stagnant artist, but she keeps putting out records, and they are still successful. Not mega selling diamond records as in the 90s, but in respectable numbers, which I think this new album can achieve as well.

True, I'd love for her to record every single year, tour the world constantly, etc. etc. But I also see that things have changed enormously for her: she had children and problems conceiving, her husband had a health scare, she had the loss of family members, her husband and dear mother are aging...

She chose life over several other things she could do in the 90s... I frankly don't think that's a bad thing to do.

Céline Dion, music's greatest ever singer, the biggest-selling Canadian artist of all-time and most successful female live act ever - what's not to love?

Posted

Well those radio stations have a point - I mean how disgusted can one feel, I mean she's only Céline Dion right...

1. The biggest-selling act in music of the last 25 years

2. The highest-grossing female artist of the 90's and second highest-grossing female of the 00's

3. The most respected female vocalist in music of the last 20 years

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID, FICKLE, IDIOTIC US radio stations. I hate the politics that go on behind the scenes of the US music industry.

Good to see you are ranting now ! This will give a big slap to Sony, but hey , hope they do learn and do better for the next Celine album

@Divaslive98 - If you think the pop divas you mentioned aren't a business/brand, you are seriously kidding yourself. Most of those big commercial artists do it for the money/fame. And if Céline debuts at #2 or #10 in the US next week, I'll be happy either way because I'm enjoying the new album very much. And I'm pretty sure Céline won't loose sleep over it. :D

So, I have been working on an iTunes map for Top 10 showings for the album, and I want to show it to you. Its first data was taken from Kworb.net on 11/7 at 18:50. I know that this info is very sensitive as it constantly changes. I wonder if it looks too cluttered, and I don't know if it's too much work to update it every day. Maybe I can make later one map with the opening numbers for all countries. :P
