guyddavies Posted September 23, 2013 at 04:53 PM Posted September 23, 2013 at 04:53 PM I can really not believe what is happening... How can this fantastic song be thrown to the pigs like that. The situation is just horrible. Celine releases her best single in over a decade, radio doesn't give her airplay, Sony messes everything up concerning a video I am so so frustrated. Even if she did a video where would it be played. Vh1 and mtv dont play them anymore and people would need to know there wss a song out via radio to go looking on youtube for a video, I dont see a music video being the injection of life some people hope, perhaps a think twice situation will happen, almost written off but then has a huge hit in europe. 1 Quote
Javito Posted September 23, 2013 at 04:54 PM Posted September 23, 2013 at 04:54 PM (edited) Only because ANDHC didn't sell what Sony executives expected it to sell in the US alone doesn't mean the album wasn't a smash hit in another level, because in Europe it certainly was. Fortunately, not all the planet is the USA, and not because an album isn't successful there that inmediately means that the album is not greatly successful for many other countries. Look what happened to Anastacia's career for example. None of her albums were ever successful in the US, but she conquered the European charts all the way with her first 3 albums, being "Not That Kind", "Freak of Nature" and "Anastacia" albums of the year every year of its release ANDHC was not the beggining of her downfall at all. Sorry but that makes me laugh . Of course its my opinion but I think that ANDHC was the beggining of an incredible new era of her career in which she conquered many new (and young) fans because of its fresh and modern style and she got the attention of all radios because she continued the great momentum she created with That's The Way It Is two years before. She was singing the songs that were appropriate to a woman of her age for the first time in her career. Until ANDHC, she rarely sang songs that couln't be sang by a woman of 40 or 50 years old (=ballads and other slow songs in her repertoire). What caused her downfall was clearly the start of her residency in Las Vegas, that's where all the problems with the promotion of her albums and the lack of commitment with Sony began, not before. In the past I would call several times, even faking other voices. I might give it another try. 2 Quote

I am so glad for her that she won Album of the year in 1997 and the music industry showedrespect towards her. The haters had to shut up. I miss those times.. I think in the 90s ballads scored much more then today, And downloading was not so much of a thing as now. You bought your cd and you did not know how it was gonna sound. It was a surprise. I remember having Deu'x as a Sinterklaas ( the dutch Santa) present and did not know any of the songs, except pour que tu'maimes encore. Those were the days.I can remember the radio dj being annoyed for having Celine on the 1st place with mhwgo for the umptheenth week. Here in Holland it was 12 weeks on number 1 position. I can remember them showing the videoclip and the VJ making a joke about wondering why she wasn't blown away from that iceberg. But at least she was in the top40, many times. Wita19 Posted September 23, 2013 at 05:26 PM Posted September 23, 2013 at 05:26 PM It is, quite frankly, a bit bizarre that all of a sudden after "I'm Alive" radio worldwide just seems to have dropped her pretty much completely. Is it linked to her going to Vegas? Is someone behind the scenes at Sony sabotaging her career? (A bit dramatic but after 13 years constant radio support then literally nothing is just bizarre) Has Celine said something or did something controversial that we've all missed? She didn't. That's the point. (BTW Thanks God she didn't!) You don't walk naked on the stage, you don't curse, you don't sing "I'm a sexy *CENSORED* and I know it",you don't have an affair with a younger boy = you don't exist in a music industry! They may mansion about you once or twice, cause you were a diva in the 90's. They can play MHWGO or BYLM and say "Remember? That's how they sang in the olden days." And then: "Now the new Britney's hit. WORK *CENSORED*!" 1 Quote The Best Is Yet To Come...

That late 90's pop style was not only over-saturated by a billion other acts, but it was already on the decline by 2002. The definition of passe. The title track was a mid-tempo ballad with soft instrumentation that brought to mind birthing babies. I'm alive was more uptempo (yet still oozed cheese and was tied to a children's movie about an anthropomorphic rat) and managed top 10 in a handful of countries..but to insinuate that it actually revolutionized Celine's sound or re-established her as a modern artist is delusional. She's had uptempo singles since her debut, some moderately successful, and while I'm alive did well it's certainly not one of her signature classics, and in the long run it won't be remembered as more than a blip when you consider her ultimate legacy as an artist, especially to the general public. ANDHC as a whole album wasn't much more uptempo or modern than the majority of her works. More of the tracks were midtempo as opposed to uptempo. Unison was far more young and fresh as a whole than ANDHC. In Celine's early English career many of the mid/uptempo songs were basically wannabe R&B-pop Whitney rejects (even though Celine just can't handle R&B, period). The only difference with ANDHC was that it leaned more towards bubblegum pop than R&B. That doesn't make it more or less "modern". Edited September 23, 2013 at 05:35 PM by Your_Su_Phu Quote

I know some of us are upset because of the slow way her single has been making its inroads, or the lack of promo, but I'm not apprehensive at all. Sure, I want to see her on the Hot 100, as I love music charts, but I'm not giving up on her and her ability to do it. Besides, there are many factors as we know that affect an artist's placement on any chart, and the Hot 100 is now a more difficult place to be since Billboard has changed its rules. I remember I was super furious when Think Twice only hit number 95 on the Hot 100, and Only One Road followed at 93. Of course, I was super happy that in Europe (especially the UK) they were super smashes. But first and foremost I was happy that I loved the songs. Sometimes I feel also kind of sad because of many choices that have been made, regardless of who made them, as well as some repetitious interviews that make me go, ok again? But then again I think that all that is secondary when I realize that even after all her success, money, etc., she is still recording and offering something new for us to enjoy. Quote

Same with my other friends who at that time is teenager too. But over all that album is not that succesful here. Compared with this song that is going to close LMBTL album in 2013, ANDHC sounds like a futuristic record to me With Celine's English career, Sony tried out many different images and styles to try and find Celine a niche in her early years. During the 2nd album, they even tried to market her as an R&B singer (they literally made Jay Leno introduce her as an upcoming R&B singer once...). As her Anglophone career progressed, they moved towards a more adult contemporary sound precisely because they realized it was her power ballads which were her biggest selling point (at least at the time), and so both FIY and LTAL were definitely more ballad-heavy. But it's inaccurate to claim ANDHC was breaking new ground for her, specifically because of her early albums.By the peak of her career, her image was far more rigidly controlled, from the press releases to how she was dressed. But in the beginning of her career she wore a transparent lace dress to the Grammy's with a thong, had a Madonna-inspired video with BDSM undertones (Did you give enough love?), and released several mid/uptempo songs with aspirations to R&B/soul, some of which could have easily been sung by Janet, Whitney or Madonna during her Bedtime stories era. Half of the Unison album was mid/uptempo with a strong 80's pop-rock influence. Your personal anecdote about hearing certain songs from the album being played for months on end doesn't really say much beyond..well, your personal experience. What's ironic is that we can hypothesize all we want about Celine's more upbeat songs such as "That's the way it is" bringing in younger fans...but the truth is, she had FAR more teenage girls screeching along to true international smashes such as My heart will go on and Because you loved me, even though they're both crusty ballads. Of course people is sacked when they don't meet the company's goal of sales, it happens everyday, not only in music business! But that doesn't mean the album was not successful, maybe that means that simply the company created surreal expectatives and they set the bar too high, in a year when (like you say), piracy was already striking the music sales worldwide. But it wasn't just Sony who had high expectations. Many fans were very disappointed in ANDHC's commercial performance, particularly in the US. Do you think no one is heavily anticipating how Adele's next album will do after 21 broke so many records? It is only a natural reaction to have high expectations after 2 diamond albums in a row, one of the best selling Xmas albums, and one of the best selling greatest hits compilations ever. Yet, as the press deemed, ANDHC could only manage to be a "middling hit".Sure, ultimately it did respectably, largely on hype. Note how I said it was the "beginning of the end", not that it was an outright flop. Edited September 23, 2013 at 06:44 PM by Your_Su_Phu Quote
