Nice words from Celine Dion about Madonna and the upcoming superbowl performance..
Posted

After watching some of the videos again, I noticed that Celine had issues with her ear monitor during many of the songs she performed … within 30 seconds of IDAL Celine is signaling her audio engineer.

Questions, how crucial are the ear monitors for singers when performing a live venue such as this one (speaker setup, audio feedback, etc.)? What impact would it have on a singer if the ear monitor failed altogether while trying to sing live?

If there was a major malfunction with Celine’s ear monitors, it would explain to me the uneasiness I observed during some of her performances.

Whew, first time EVER posting my thoughts here on the Forum and my hands are sweating like crazy. (Run Bubba Runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!)

Awh, it's too bad some people feel anxious posting in here. Not everyone is hostile tho. Post away!

I would imagine it would be very difficult, they wouldn't know know their cues. Don't know for sure tho.

I noticed that too that she was having trouble with her ear thing. and normally her brother is in her ear if she forgets a word. But but she did an amazing job. I wuld never ever say anything bad about her. Nothing. And

The ear monitor makes it so a performer can hear themselves sing. Back in the day, performers did not have ear monitors, but instead big speakers facing them on stage so they could hear. Now they have the ear monitor. In a setting such as Vegas, Celine could probably could get away a failing ear monitor since it is not very loud. Actually, if you go back to the Grammy Nominations Concert from 2004 where she sang Dance With My Father, they had a ton of problems, one of which was a failing ear monitor, which she took out. She then sang the song without it.

At this particular concert, the crowd had about as much energy as the previous 2000 concerts put together. Lol. The crowd was HOT and loud, and singing along with her. Honestly this was probably the worst event for her to have a problem with the ear monitor because she definitely would not have been able to hear herself with as loud as the crowd is.

Thank you so much for the information, really appreciate it. :flowers:

As Tyler said, this wasn't the venue to have ear monitor trouble. Think of it as this way, you are singing along with "I Drove All Night," with Celine singing in your ear, with it you know how long to hold a note, when the song starts, etc. Now imagine singing just an instrumental without her voice just you and the music, it's difficult because you don't know when to come in, and you will also "doubt" yourself to an extent. The ear piece is also used as a communication tool, again another example take her T.C. tour and when she walks around the stage with I drove all night, she crosses the platforms her musicians are on. In one show, I think in Montreal the bassist (His name has left my mind at the moment.) platform didn't work so she passed by and didn't step on his platform. It's a very vital and helpful tool to have, and like she said on the LTAL tour Rene would have his own microphone and he would talk to her and comment on her stage presence.

Didn't she also have microphone trouble in this show also? Wish she would go back to the corded mic so she wouldn't have this problem, plus the sound was way better with the cord microphone.

and that tackles the whole issue we are having here...it's the earmonitors! She sounded amazing on that soundtrack, and a very big part of the concert still sounds completely live to me so the earmonitors were the problem... Edited by browseceline

Yeah, I don't think she lipped THLAL. I think she gets excited when she has not sang a song for a long time lol. But that's just from my perspective. Edited by celine_rox

They're similar to having headphones in, except that they have foam that expands (like sleeping ear plugs) to block out most of the outside noise.

Celine has lots and lots of problems with her ear monitors it seems. She was having a really hard time getting things to sound how she wanted during TCWT (I remember there being a big meeting about how they weren't working well at one point in the tour) and you can see how stressed she before and during the Sur Les Plaines DVD (she also constantly plays with them during that concert. I'd imagine it's hard to get things to work perfectly when you're on the road vs. in the same venue every night, like in Vegas, where you don't have to hook up all of the sound equipment and test it that day. And like lots have already said...the Jamaica concert was definitely not the place to take out the ear monitor because it would just make it almost impossible for her to hear what's going on.

I don't think she really had ear monitor problems, rather, the volume wasn't loud enough with the crowd, hence, she couldn't hear the playback playing. I think normally, when singing live, you hear yourself singing. But when she's lipping, she hears the playback instead.

But at this concert, she didn't just take out the ear piece, or fool around with it, she specifically motioned for them to turn it UP. Meaning, the crowd was probably so loud, that she simply couldn't hear the playback all the way.

Now, for songs like IDAN and MHWGO etc, her not hearing it perfectly is fine since she has lipped those songs hundreds of times. But for THLAL, she really needed the volume louder because she didn't have the song memorized as well as she should have, or just got nervous when everything was going down hill and forgot it all.

So, I don't think it was a technical problem ear-piece wise, rather, more of a volume problem.

Most likely it is not loud, the ear buds are made out of foam, that you pinch together and then place in your ear, once in your ear the foam expands and blocks nearly all of the sound. You can buy head phones like this. The volume isn't very loud, and I think she can control it, just like she turns it on and off. I had to create my own makeshift one for a concert in the local harvest festival, it's a physcological effect, if you can't hear yourself you just concentrate on how your voice is connecting with the notes where as if I hear myself sing, I think it's horrible when people have continuoisly told me I'm not.

On the Red Heads facebook page there is a video of the rehearsal. It's audio only with photos 6.42 mins long. Most of it is already on youtube but it's still worth listening to.

The video isn't on youtube and I can't copy it off the facebook page. I'm sure someone could though :)

It almost sounds like in this video at around 4:45 when Celine starts the bridge that her and Diana had originally planned on splitting that up, maybe each of them singing a line then the other one singing the next.

But yeah around that time the words I can pick out make it sounds like that.

Rehearsal of THLAL was live

Maybe something went wrong during the rehearsal that made them use playback. (watch 4:08)

I do not mean any disrespect, but what is wrong with people?! How can you say THLAL was lipped? Use your heads! First of all, its in a lower key than the record. It is lower that the 98 CD. So what is she lipping from? A different live recording where they happened to also lower the key? Also, do you realize how loud that stage is with all those instruments? There is no way she can hear herself sing without a monitor, and she wears in-ear monitors. She was signaling to a sound man to turn something up...maybe her own voice to hear herself better. It could have been the whole mix for all we know. Also... how the hell can someone lip sync to scat and ad libbed vocals that she does THROUGHOUT THE SONG? We are supposed to believe that she rehearsed so long that she remembers every little nuance that she did from a live performance long ago that was in a lower key? ALSO....when she sings live she tends to hold the mic to the side of her mouth...she is doing that because SHE IS SINGING IT LIVE. I am not in denial. I know she has lipped many times. This song was not lipped. Use your heads. She told that other singer that "tonight I'll do this verse" or something like that. Suddenly last minute she decided she was going to lip the song in a lower key from some other live performance???? USE YOUR HEADS!
