nuts2you Posted March 6, 2013 at 03:17 PM Posted March 6, 2013 at 03:17 PM Celine Dion talks 10th anniversary of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage/DeniseTruscello.net It’s difficult to believe that 10 years ago this month, Celine Dion opened The Colosseum at Caesars Palace to premiere her first Las Vegas residency. The doors were unlocked on March 25, 2003, and I was there opening night when Celine lost her shoes at one point and had to go onstage barefoot to sing.It proved to be good luck, and the star-studded audience that included Siegfried and Roy, Dick Clark, Justin Timberlake and David Foster gave her the first of what are now hundreds of standing ovations. It was a huge gamble: Caesars executives gave the go-ahead for a $100 million investment converting the Magical Empire building into a spectacular, large yet intimate performance theater. AEG, the entertainment-production conglomerate, put up an additional $150 million to stage Celine’s show “A New Day.”Naysayers said it was a gamble destined to fail. It was just four days after the Iraq war began, and people feared Las Vegas would suffer a tourist turndown. Nobody believed a solo French-Canadian singer could fill 4,000 seats night after night and make the building a big success.Incredibly, the same was said for Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart and now Shania Twain. All are still performing, all are selling out the theater, and The Colosseum is busier than ever. 3/15/11: Celine Dion at The Colosseum As an AEG spokesman said: “No one could have envisioned how the show and venue would forever raise the bar for Las Vegas entertainment and how it would set the stage for the biggest entertainers in the world to call The Colosseum and Las Vegas home.”Celine’s “A New Day” set box office records. She took a Las Vegas hiatus for the world tour of “A New Day” and then to give birth to her twin sons. Now she’s about to start the third year of her second residency show and has agreed to a two-year contract extension. When that runs its course, she will have celebrated 10 years of shows in the theater. For the next three weeks, we’ll share memories -- and secrets -- of The Colosseum’s first decade. Next week, our interview with AEG chief John Meglen and the following week with two of the theater staff who have been there since Day 1 and never missed a show.We start today with Celine since the building was created for her. The bestselling female artist of all time is probably also the world’s only entertainer to have a building built for her and her artistic vision. She agreed to a Q+A with AEG, and she talks about her role in the design and construction of the building and what makes The Colosseum a performer’s dream. Shania Twain: 'Still the One' Opening Night Ten years ago, The Colosseum was built for you. Patrick Berge, president of Sceno Plus, said that the main goal was to create a building you feel comfortable singing in every night and one that helps you develop a stronger connection with your audience. How did you work with the development team/architects to accomplish this?Well, first of all, I have to say that I love performing in this theater. Ten years later, it feels as warm and intimate as it did when we did our very first show. We’re performing in front of 4,000 people, and it feels like we’re in my living room. I can see their faces, I can hear them talking to me in between songs, and I can even shake their hands (not all of them!).Patrick and his team at Sceno Plus worked very closely with Franco Dragone’s team and our team to make sure that the acoustics and the sightlines were perfect, and they did an amazing job. The giant screen allows us to present incredible visuals for the audiences to enjoy. On top of this, they created built-in humidifiers on our stage to keep the air moist for my vocal chords. This is amazing!I’ve played at hundreds of wonderful venues around the world, but I think The Colosseum is the best of them all. I know everyone’s used this expression, but it’s true -- there’s not a bad seat in the house! Elton John's The Million Dollar Piano at Caesars Palace What is your favorite memory/moment at The Colosseum? We’ve had so many memorable moments at The Colosseum, but since we’re talking about the 10th anniversary, how about something that happened on the very first show 10 years ago on March 25, 2003? We had all the media and VIPs in attendance for this premiere. ... Obviously, it was a very big night.Somehow, during a costume change, my shoes went missing. It was like do I leave the audience waiting, or do I go out in my bare feet? You can’t keep the people waiting, especially on opening night, so I started the song shoeless ... and just as I was starting to sing, my brother Michel came onstage with the missing shoes!I think that moment set the tone for every show since then. We’re “live,” and that means no show is ever exactly the same as another. There’s something different and unique about every performance. Sometimes it makes our hearts beat a little faster, but it also makes it very exciting. By the way, so far no more problems with shoes not showing up on time! There are now additional resident artists joining you during the year in The Colosseum’s roster (Elton John, Rod Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld and Shania Twain). Have you given them any suggestions or tips about performing at The Colosseum? 11/6/10: Rod Stewart at The Colosseum I haven’t really given any of them advice. They’re all great artists with a lot of experience. The only thing I learned from my very own experience was to not do too many shows in one year. We started out doing 200 shows a year, and that was a little tough. Now we do 70 shows a year, and it’s working out great.Do you have a “Happy Anniversary” message for the team at The Colosseum?Yes! I’d like to say a very Happy 10th Birthday to the team at The Colosseum, and more than this, I want to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication, whether they’ve been there for the entire 10 years, or they’ve joined along the way. It’s a great place for an artist to call home, and this is because of the great teams that we have at Caesars, AEG, as well as my musicians and our team at CDA.Last but not least, I want to thank the fans for coming to see our show over the years. They make it all happen!Next week, our interview with John Meglen, the man who bet the bank and went out on a limb for the $150 million to bankroll those first shows.Robin Leach has been a journalist for more than 50 years and has spent the past decade giving readers the inside scoop on Las Vegas, the world’s premier platinum playground.Follow Robin Leach on Twitter at Twitter.com/Robin_Leach.Follow Vegas DeLuxe on Twitter at Twitter.com/vegasdeluxe.Follow VDLX Editor Don Chareunsy on Twitter at Twitter.com/VDLXEditorDon.Link Share Thishttp://media.vegasdeluxe.com/assets/images/icons/share/email.pngE-mailhttp://media.vegasdeluxe.com/assets/images/icons/share/digg.pngdigghttp://media.vegasdeluxe.com/assets/images/icons/share/facebook.pngFacebook Quote

Timster Posted March 7, 2013 at 09:19 AM Posted March 7, 2013 at 09:19 AM Yes, but so is Elvis, and that didn't stop them . . The Elvis performance was not a true hologram. They used a body double for all the shots showing his whole body. You'll notice that the actual clips of Elvis standing next to Celine just show him from the waist up, and they had to keep changing the camera angles to match the original Elvis video. He was never "on stage" next to Celine, it was all edited in after the performance. There is no way they'd be able to do a proper hologram of Elvis, how many performances are there of him taken from just one camera showing his whole body?? Besides, I think they used lots of special cameras when filming Celine's hologram so that it would look right from every angle in the Colosseum. Quote

A shrine? Well maybe not a shrine, but lots of ppl are obsessed with R. Kelly and might be more willing to buy tickets to the show if it had an R. Kelly hologram; it would just be a funny thing to have in the show, which a lot of people would really appreciate! Quote

guyddavies Posted March 10, 2013 at 11:02 PM Posted March 10, 2013 at 11:02 PM Review of Feb. 26th and 27th. (I wasn't sure where to post this)I was sitting in FORCH 3 DD on Tues and FORCH 4 EE on Wed. ( went for the 250.00 tickets SOOOO worth it !! :whee: ) She walks down between 3 and 4 during HDYKTMP and actually stays for a while. YES I touched her hand for 2 secs!!! (lol I counted) She also stays at the front row and touches peoples hands! If you reach for her. Let me start by saying again Utube doesn't do the show any justice! On Tuesday she was greeted with a standing ovation and she was truely gratefull however on Wed. no standing O when she appeared. Her speech started off with her saying she had the flu and was sorry for missing the shows. However after that she does not deviate! I will say though that on Wed the audience laughed louder at her speech then on Tues. so I guess I see why she doesn't change it. It just must be a drag to say it over and over and for the band to hear it over and over! There were no changes to the shows material or costume. She does tend to gravitate to the part of the audience that vies for her attention! So sing and dance with her and she will be there more. She is very expressive and engaging to all though! I got a picture with Mego and with Marc! The band members have to walk out of the Colessium before hand, I guess to change, so if you can catch them they are more than happy to take a picture w/ you. I just missed Andre! Mr. Paganini was out of this world! The runs she does are fantastic! (I guess you would call it scatting) It really was the musical highlight of both evenings for me! You can tell she enjoys performing this number Yes I will have to admit I even enjoyed MHWGO. Wed. nights adience got really excited when they heard the opening. The water feature is cool and puts off a nice breeze. To be honest all the numbers were wonderful. Well Overjoyed is one I could do without. It doesn't really get that much reaction either. She could easily replace it with another duet here! The only little disappointment I had was with LCMM and RDMH, these numbers are way toooo rushed! It's a shame beause it gets the audience up! To all the Adele fans ( I love her too) RITD has been Dionized! She does a great job and you can tell she enjoys it. It's a good number because it has a good tempo and people are clapping along. She looked absolutely fantastic. Nothing like China where she looked tired. She must have removed some extentions because her hair looked wonderful. She definitely knows how to work the dresses! Because she uses the slits to their full advantage! She looked beautiful with a little weight on her. It's nice to see a little "jiggle"!!!AAAA++++ show. I know there was another member of the forum that went so it'll be interesting to hear his take on the show! I thought my ears were burning lmao yeah I was there on the 26th in the rear orchestra 3, and on the 27th in the front orchestra 4 seat 404 i think it was facing the stage, my brother got front orchestra 3 seat 303 where celine stops, sings, sits for at seventeen, at first i was a little annoyed at ticket master, they have this stupid policy thatyou cant leave an empty seat, so in the front orchestra 3 there are only 3 seats on the row, so they wouldnt let us sit together even though we were paying $1375 dollars a seat!!!! but it worked out well in the end, as in my seat when celine came onto the stage i was the first person she saw and she winked at me and smiled, at first i knew she winked at me, but after a few minutes I was thinking nah it must have been in general to the audience, but a few people including my brother said OMG celine winked at you!!!! then during HDYKTMP she held my brothers hand and then walked down the front and the rest of the people on the front row were boring, no offence if any were you but they didnt stand up once during the show, one of them yawned half of it, so i put my hand out to hold celines and she went for mine and then looked shocked when the rest of the row then stuck their hands out, i think celine could tell i was a real fan as she only tapped each of them for a fraction of a second, but when she got to me she held my hand for a good few seconds before moving on. during RDMH and LCMM my brother dancing as only a gay lad can got celines attention and she went over to his side and danced on the stage in front of him for a second, and then as the backing singers left the stage prior to MHWGO they pointed at him and laughed and waved, we he was made up about!!! the entire show was amazing, ive read people say a few times that they wouldnt travel to vegas to see such a boring setlist, or that celine should vary her speeches and its getting repetitive, but i didnt get that at all, ithink its a show you have to see live, its soooooooo much better than AND, from the moment she comes on stage, to the moment you leave she takes you through so many emotions, and I have to agree the only song they should cut is overjoyed, yet i dont think its boring and its certainly well done, it just stands out in a show that is so good on so many levels. if for example they had put the show into AND to replace the stevie wonder song there it would have been great, it might have fit AND better, but i think with "celine" it stands out too much as not being as good as the rest. as for her speeches unfortunately I think that is a vegas curse thing, cher did the same, bette midler did the same, they are only allowed to do 90 minutes, it leaves all of about 5 minutes in total for talking, and as an artist it would be easy for celine to start talking and go over the 90 mins, because of that, and even though caesers is one big group they have different divisions, the casino, the entertainment, the hotel, for example you cant use total rewards to get money off at the bars in the Colosseum because they say technically they arent owned by the hotel. i dont understand it fully but i know the casinos get upset if a show goes on too long, for them the singer is a way to get people in the casino, thats what we were told, for example the fountains at the belagio cost $18 000 a day to run, but it gets people in, same with the free drinks when people are gambling, caesers dont employ celine and shania to be the entertainment venue of the world, they do it so that before and after the show people will eat drink and gamble in the casino. hence celine as big as she is is set to 90 minutes, on top of that most people only get to the concert once, they dont download the bootlegs, so why change the show night after night when the audience changes night after night??? sure it may get boring for celine, but im sure keep getting her hands slapped for going over 90 mins would grate on her even more lol anyway the shows were fantastic, we saw her again on the 5th before we came home on front orchestra 4 row DD on the 2 aisle seats and got to hold her hand again!!! unbelievable!! and yeah I hate to say it but MHWGO should never be cut, the audience loves it, its a spectacle in itself, this show brings new life to her classics, the way she goes from IACBTM to TPOL is just breath taking, her riffs in mr pacinini make your mouth hang open kind of wow!!! and lullaby is beautiful, i think for anyone who hasnt been to vegas its a set list that on paper looks like hmmmm why should I go there are hardly any celine songs, but its not until your there that your like OMG wow they are all celine songs, these are songs that show what celine can do and they belong in the show, i know not everyone can afford to go, but to critisise the show without seeing it is like saying im not trying that cake its awful without tasting it, never judge a book and all that!!! lol but seriously I think it is one of the best shows of her career, i just hope the eventual DVD does it justice, but i dont think it could ever capture the intimate atmosphere that you feel sitting there, so totally different than AND or the TC tour, its like sitting in her living room, i dont know if anyone else has felt this but its not so much a feeling of being at a show as it is a feeling of her inviting you over to sing some songs to you. the only downside was someone broke into our room and stole a few things which can be replaced, but they also took our celine dion VIP gift bags that we paid the money for, i know its only a travel bag and a pen and the for keeps book etc, but the only reason I could personally afford to go was because last year my dad died and we used some of his money to go and see celine, so in a way it was the last thing he paid for us to do, and someone stole a large part of it, ive written to caesers and hope they can replace it, but other than that the entire 9 days were so amazing, oh and if anyone is going to vegas I cant recommend V the variety show highly enough at planet Hollywood, i thought id hate it, but i laughed none stop, and it was like watching americas got talent live, magicians, acrobats, comedians etc, and it was only about $30 each, just a tip if ever your in vegas and its a night celine isnt on. 2 Quote

Love the part about Celine being pregnant and making lunch for both of them. Also I find it interesting about the Sigfreid and Roy advice! I guess she took their advice to heart. Davey84 Posted April 4, 2013 at 01:57 PM Posted April 4, 2013 at 01:57 PM I don't like how this guy sings, but the music is really nice! It would be a nice change to the music they have been using for forever now, especially with the big orchestra now! Though I'd make the climax a bit more explosive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScOjPCZP8M4 Quote http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/daveyh84/incognito198701_zpsaaootxh1.jpgRick, ik hou van jou voor altijd!A New Day... has come 28/29 April & 2/3 May 07Antwerpen 13 et 14 mai,Paris 24 et 25 mai, Amsterdam 2 juinet Arras 7 juillet Chances Taken!!!How Do You Keep The Music Playing? - Celine Opening Night March 15th, March 16th

I don't like his voice at all...yuk..And about the arrangement, yes it is more challenging and sounds interesting. What the main problem is in the Vegas show, is that the original band overplays the orchestral parts of the orchestra. The drums and guitars are too loud and overplay the other instruments. You would think that with a huge orchestra like this, there are far more things you can do with the arrangement. I do understand though that a change of the arrangement probably means that Celine has to rerecord her prerecorded vocals ;-) But once that is done, she can start with a fresh new arrangement of this song;-) I rather hear this arrangement.. so beautiful ( not the live version because the studiorecording sounds even better: Quote <iframe width="640" height="390" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hl2XkxnYljg" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
