Got my copy of the Canadian Deluxe Edition today and there's an error in the bonus 2013 calendar. The month of December follows the month of July. LOL

Anybody else have that?

I'm finally ready to give a thorough review of this album. I think that artistically speaking, it's one of her best French albums ever, behind D'eux and S'il Suffisait D'aimer. It's certainly better than 1fqt or D'elles.

I'll admit, when I first heard most of the songs the whole way through, I was quite underwhelmed. One of the biggest problems is that I'm not a French speaker. Although I can look up the translation of a song and subsequently get a better understanding and appreciation for it, my initial reaction is based pretty solely on the catchiness of the melody and the vocal performance.

But I IMPLORE you all, before deciding whether or not you like this album, you MUST have the English translations to the songs on the side. I think this is possibly Celine's most cohesively personal album ever. They really put care into constructing every bit, even down to the album art. I'm not saying the end result is perfect, but the attention to detail in terms of the album's conception is brilliant.

One of my friends (Tal) wrote a really poignant review of this album where she made the oft-noted point that artists are often thought to produce their best work when they're suffering. It's hard to write deep and powerful songs when you're living a boring, blissful life. Critics seem to want to hear mostly about heartbreak, suffering, or the overcoming of obstacles. It just so happens that Celine's life for as long as we can remember has been picture-perfect, and that in a sense makes for boring songwriting. You won't get any songs about domestic abuse or drug-use here  BUT every song is 100 percent honest to Celine as a person. Of course there have been songs written about Celine before which have been personal and tapped into her yearnings and fears, but this is the first time that we get an entire album of songs which all relate to Celine the woman as we know her today. The album could've easily been called "Celine".

She still doesn't write her own songs, so this isn't the artistic pinnacle of her career (I hope), but it's the closest thing we've got.

A review by the Montreal Gazette also noted something really interesting. Although Celine's life is pretty rosy and perfect, they tried their best to make the material as dark and interesting as possible. In fact over half of the songs have relatively dark themes despite mostly being about her relationships with Rene, her children, her late father, her mother. Even the songs which may not seem at first glance to connect with Celine - kind of do, in my opinion. Ne Me Quitte Pas must have special significance to Celine considering how old Rene is in comparison (and how young their children are..). I know that literally the lyrics are actually the cries of a jilted lover and so it wouldn't directly translate to Celine-Rene, but I'm talking about the general idea of the lover who is "left behind". I'm sure Celine thinks about the future..

Also, while the song about "Lea" is the songwriter's personal tragedy, Celine herself lost a girl triplet, as we all remember.

Another interesting thing is how incredibly restrained Celine is vocally here. It's as if she really listened to her critics all these years. :P Now most of us would love to hear endless vocal acrobatics from her, but it's nice to hear her explore other layers of her voice as well. I really like how we hear more of the lower and middle parts of her voice on this album. This (as well as most of the songs' pretty simple melodies) may make the album boring for some, and that's understandable, but I personally can look past that towards the poetry of the lyrics and the stories Celine and the songwriters are trying to tell here.

Also some extra notes:

- Qui peu vivre sans amour: I actually don't like this song so much anymore. It's funny because when I first heard the snippets, this was my favorite. I think I was so bored with the sleepiness and restraint of most of the other songs, and this sounded so modern and fresh in comparison. But now that we have the whole track, the chorus itself is pretty tedious imo and it's also out-of-place thematically and musically from the rest of the album. I also don't like her vocalizations at the end.

- Que toi au monde: Luc Plamondon is a genius at writing melancholy love songs with haunting melodies. I love the simple yet poignant lyrics. She could have ripped it up at the end but decided to remain soft and subtle.

- NMQP : Some of the live performances were better, more passionate, but it's nice to have an official recording with the studio polish.

- Moi quand je pleure: One of the most unique tracks she's ever done, musically speaking. And the lyrics are incredibly true about the kind of person Celine is. I relate :P

-I actually enjoy all 3 duets on here, especially the one with Hallyday and Ferland. You know, it's funny people complain about her singing with crusty old dudes, but in a way I find it is meant to mirror her relationship with Rene! It really fits!

8/10.

Wow that's pretty harsh. This is the way I look at it. If critics pan it, then it generally good! They often do the same for movies and guess what? They are usually full of it!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Did we read the same review? lol I don't think he panned it at all. He gave it an "OK" rating, 2.5/5, but he had quite a lot of positive things to say in the actual review. They have to leave room, I mean for one Celine doesn't write any of her own songs

All of the professional reviews I've read so far have been pretty positive, especially considering that Celine is usually flat out panned

I got my deluxe version yesterday and immediately hopped in my car to drive around while listening to the whole thing. And just as I thought, this album is without a doubt one of my top 3 favorite albums. She sounds so amazing, and I love the old-time French feel it has (especially on MQJP) I really can't pick a favorite song, but I will say my least favorite are Tant de Temps and Que Toi Au Monde. But that being said, after a few listens they've already started growing on me.

My absolute favorites are: Lea, Jours, Pleure, Attendre, Tout Appris and Miracle. But I really love them all, which is very rare for me as there are usually at least a few on every album that I ALWAYS skip. I just don't have that with SA.

She really really delivered. I'm so head over heels in love with her and this album.

When PAMP first came out I didn't like it at all, but after hearing how it fits in with the album as a whole I adore it. I don't think I got the concept of it initially. But this album is full of SO MUCH emotion, there are multiple songs that have made me cry. And NMQP was never a favorite of mine, until I heard it with the full album. So beautiful.

I'm just in awe, as I'm sure most of you are.

Also, to those who don't like Lea. Give it another listen, read through the lyrics, it is such a powerful song. It might be my favorite from the whole album, but I just can't officially decide that quite yet.

Anyways, LOVE LOVE LOVE it. So excited to see more live performances from her, the special was amazing. She sounds so great and strong! (To Celine's team: this is what she needs and we, the fans, need... REAL LIVE PERFORMANCES that show us just what that beautiful voice can do!)

I'm just on a total Celine high! :whee: :whee: :whee:

Ok, back to watching election results and listening to Celine!

You are right, lyrics are very important so we can appreciate the album. I myself was surprised how personal it is all. It made me love it even more.

Well, it may be true that artists produce better creations at hard times. or maybe it's just our/the critics' overestimating of such material (heartbreak, suffering, overcoming of obstacles) and underestimating of the themes of love, peace, friends&family, happy times... Maybe it's just our mistake since we are used to think that 'real life' is full of misfortune and pain while happiness is just a dream that never comes true. Well, actually, it does sometimes. It did for Celine now that she has her children. But she hasn't always had good times. She's suffered throughout her life. What's more, not every single song on this album is a happy song. No, most are not. They are true, heartfelt and pretty serious since they are about the loss of her father, her mother getting old and maybe near the end of her lifetime, and so on.

You know, it's funny people complain about her singing with crusty old dudes, but in a way I find it is meant to mirror her relationship with Rene! It really fits!

I never thought about this but it makes sense, you might be right.

Is it just me, or does every man on this album sound exactly the same?

Sorry, I think it's just you. They don't sound the same at all.

Johnny, for example, although I'm not a fan, but his voice stands out, you recognise it the first second you hear it. You never wonder who's the guy singing, you always know it's Johnny. I've never heard Henri Salvador before but on this song he sounds to me very gentle and relaxing so I like his voice. But Ferland is definitely my favourite of all three.

Fifiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!

I agree with you to some extent. it's great that the concept was to present a more fragile Celine, with more profound song ideas instead of the usual saccarine songs (although in her recent french albums, it isn't so dominant). Nevertheless, some of these songs are good in intention but lack in performance, such is for example "Parler a mon pere" who has no line (excapt the title line) that has any relation to her father. it is unrelated musically and lyrically to any emotional profoundness regarding the loss of her father. I think that's a shame and it's not the only song on the album where i find this lyrical dissapointment.

for the love songs i expect less so i am less dissapointed.

i think the only two lyrical and musical altogether great acts are moi quand je pleure and attendre.. they both capture the lyrics and music and combine them to something that makes sense together..

Guys, could you, please, explain the difference between an ordinary "Sans attendre" CD and "Sans attendre" Deluxe Edition? It's like 14 tracks on CD and 16 on Deluxe Edition? Is a calendar 2013 included in DE?

Thanks!

It isn't possible to express my attitude to you, CELINE... There's no suitable words in any language to describe what I feel for you...

the difference is : deluxe version is a digipack release (paper) - it has 16 songs instead of 14, it has a calendar included. That's it.

That's because it wasn't released in the USA. D'elles wasn't released here either, ONCP was released on the same date as most of the rest of the western world, and 1F4T was released a few months late.

My deluxe copy arrived today as I was told it would!!! I am so happy to finally have it in my hands. I love all of the songs. I enjoy each one, because each song has its own unique sound and message. I didn't think that I would like the duets with the older guys, but actually I think that they sound nice together. That's one thing that I found surprising. I think that it's a lovely album! I am thrilled with it, and I'm hoping that the new English album is just as awesome!

I received an e-mail with the tracking info also.
