L.A. Reid at Epic: His First Week on the Job

The "X Factor" judge and seasoned music executive has yet to be formally announced as the new head of Epic Label Group, but he's already mulling big ideas, like what it would take to bring Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez back into the Sony fold.

Doug Morris has yet to actually occupy his newly minted seat as CEO of Sony Music Entertainment (word is he's in Europe until the 15th), but he's made his presence known via an introductory memo sent to staff on July 6 promising to "begin a new and important chapter in the history of our great company."

Conversely, new Epic Label Group head Antonio "L.A." Reid has been almost a regular fixture around the halls of midtown Manhattan's 550 Madison Ave., but as of end of day Monday July 11, a formal announcement of his arrival had yet to be made.

That's not to say Reid didn't have a busy first week. The longtime record executive, who left Island Def Jam in March to join Simon Cowell's The X Factor as a judge, has been tending to the decor of his office, which will no doubt incorporate the warm colors and clean lines that adorned his previous suites, taking meetings and getting "his people" situated, however unofficially, according to a Sony insider.

And there's already been talk of big plans, like possibly bringing Mariah Carey (a Columbia artist from 1990 to 1999) and Jennifer Lopez (signed in 1999, "parted ways" with Epic in 2010) back into the Sony fold. Both were among Reid's pet projects at IDJ, the former selling upwards of seven million albums under his watch, and the latter riding a comeback wave that began with her RedOne-produced single, "On The Floor" (a judging gig on American Idol didn't hurt).

Of course, getting these pop divas out of their respective deals would likely prove a tricky endeavor, but not an impossible one. After all, Morris' post-Universal Music Group "no poaching" clause applies to staff, not artists, although where the former is concerned, there are plenty of Reid loyalists eager to make the jump to Epic.

Kinda ironic that he wants Mariah and JLo back :giggle:

The guy can kinda sing ...and he totally sounds like MC with whisper notes  !!!

BUT... i dont know what to think of this. its annoying enough to listen to female philippino singers tryin to sing Mariah & Celine verging on sounding pageantine & murdering their songs  . im not sure how flattering is it to listen to a guy wanting to sound like a clone of MC. its not like he's got a naturally high voice; his talking voice sounds like that of a 20 yr old guy. so what is he tryin to be? singer? or ...mimicry artist? impersonator?

it was kinda surprising & interesting to hear him sound like Mariah though :flowers:

Mariah #28 on Billboard's Biggest AC Artists Ever

"The 50 Biggest Adult Contemporary Artists Ever"

Obviously, people mock Adult Contemporary radio. It's called "vanilla" and bland. Tedious. Monotonic. Strictly for the elevator. We beg to differ: AC is absolutely captivating. And to celebrate the chart's 50th anniversary, we've ranked its 50 biggest stars.

Aside from being one of the most successful formats in the histories of recorded music and commercial radio, our AC chart is home to hall of famers, big-betters and hard rockers. Home to soulful sweethearts and songwriting superstars. AC isn't a place songs go to die. As radio folks, songwriters and fans well know - AC is the place where stars go to live forever.

28 Mariah Carey

Just 20 years old when she arrived in 1990, Carey scored three AC No. 1s from her self-titled debut album: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." Now mother of twins, she collected her seventh and most recent leader with "Oh Santa!" last winter.

My thoughts exactly. I mean it's very impressive the way he sings but if you listen to him more than 2 mins it becomes annoying. And you are right enough wannabes already.

He's trying to be gayer than he already is. Being able to sing like Holy Mimi is the Holy Grail in gaylandia! :kissbye: :kissbye:

im ok with people being gay. maybe he's doing this bcoz of the 15mins attention he's getting ...umm... for now!! i mean, the girls went totally berserk ...probably bcoz of the surprise factor; the guy does sound like Mariah!! but hello gay or straight i wish he found his own sound. this kinda singing (i think) works only at drag shows. but people are different; maybe his audience dig him.

i dont understand philippino language so i cant talk about the whole video. but i didnt like one of the judge askin him 'r u gay or straight?' [i understood that part coz she asked in English] i dont think that should be a matter of discussion. :pinch:

It was more off-key than Taylor Swift at her worst.

the guy has a good voice, but he sure as hell doesnt know how to use it.

That was impressive for the first 30 seconds but not my cup of tea.

As far as a guy having a high pitch voice & sounding like a girl this guy blows me away. Before you click it's an Adele cover.

He also does this disney medley & it's really cool & it's called "One Man Show".

But getting back on topic Mariah would probably be flattered if she asaw that :)

Pilipinas Got Talent is not for legitimate musical talents who want to get noticed. :whistling: The show gravitates more toward shock/gimmick acts. Consider: the winner of the previous season was a man who wailed like Regine (remember her? lol) and whose performance in the final was switching bet. male and female voices in a self-duet of "The Prayer". :whistling:

Da Brat Touched by Mariah's Prison Visit

Posted by Lynn on Thursday, 21-Jul-2011, 1:22AM EDT

Da Brat, whose real name is Shawntae Harris, has served her time and says she is a new woman. She recently spoke with CNN about her hopes for a reality show, reviving her music career and how Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon shocked her while she was incarcerated.

CNN: You have very close family and friends, so who surprised you by coming to visit you in prison?

Da Brat: (Laughing) Mariah (Mariah Carey -- Da Brat and Carey appeared together in Carey's film "Glitter.") Yeah, Mariah and Nick (Nick Cannon, Carey's husband).

It was a shocker because the whole place was in an uproar. They must have called ahead because all of the officers and the warden knew. The whole compound put on their uniforms and it was a down day when we didn't have inspection or anything.

They called me and told me I had a visitor and I hadn't requested a special visitor so I was like "Huh?" Mind you, the person who came to get me was a lieutenant who up until then had been a complete a**hole towards me, but she was being all nice.

They told me to go into the warden's conference room and when I came around the corner I saw Mariah's manager. My knees buckled and I almost passed out. I couldn't believe she had come to see me.

She found a private airport that I didn't even know existed, flew her G5 in and came to see her BFF. I was really touched by that.

X Factor: Mariah Will Appear – But Not as a Judge

It's official – Mariah Carey will appear on this fall's buzzy new talent competition, The X Factor, a source close to the show tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Carey won't be a judge, but rather a guest of a judge – in this case Simon Cowell, who hinted recently the diva was interested in joining the show.

"Mariah is definitely confirmed to be a part of X Factor," the source says. "She is confirmed to tape something with Simon Cowell at the judge's homes."

And Carey won't be the only celeb guest, the source adds.

"Each of the judges will tape something with mentors they have selected and Simon has selected Mariah to do that with him. The judge's mentor the talent they pick and she will be working with them," says the source.

Simon Cowell Hails Mariah Carey

Posted by Lynn on Friday, 02-Sep-2011, 3:13PM EDT

The X Factor USA judge joined fellow panelists Paula Abdul, LA Reid and Nicole Scherzinger in discussing their favorite artists for a Fox All Access radio special.

"Mariah is everything you want a diva to be," Cowell said during The X Factor: The Judges' Ultimate Picks. "To me if you look in the dictionary under diva it says see Mariah Carey.

"She gets it and it's everything a star should be. Great, great, great singer, unbelievable songwriter and I just adore her."

Cowell, who will be aided by Carey during the Judges' Houses stage of the competition, continued: "I absolutely love her, I love everything about her and she is a kind person but she is also very competitive and I like that and that's what makes her special."

The X Factor USA's two-night premiere kicks off on Wednesday, September 21 and Thursday, September 22 at 8pm ET on Fox.

Love this album

i can't believe Music Box is actually her most successful album, commercially. i always thought it's one of her weaker albums. she was at her peak (vocally) when she made this album, but the overall production was just too boring for my taste. Edited by Black Kitten

I don't like 'Music Box' either. For me, the order of her studio albums is Butterfly > Daydream > MOAIA > E=MC2 > TEOM > rest of the albums > Rainbow

Honestly, me too !!!! :giggle:

i mean, i loved the albm when i first heard it... unlike a lot of her albms which were rather "growers", Music Box became my favorite instantly coz the melodies were so great & catchy. but then after a couple of spins (i overplayed it a lot!!) it started to get a little boring ...ballad after ballad after ballad... no wonder Mariah described "Hero" as too schmaltzy!! i wouldnt say that, I dont like Music Box ...but it is one of Mariah's albms i least listen to!!!

for me, Butterfly still reigns!!!

Butterfly> Daydream> The Emancipation Of Mimi> Mariah Carey> Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel> Rainbow> rest of her albums> Charmbracelet
