Yes! I noticed this in the first listen but forgot to mention in my review! Her voice suddenly thickens (at 1 min and 42 secs) and kind of sounds like Cher.

Sounds like you and I are on exactly the same page when it comes to Celine fandom, so perhaps we're not that rare (or maybe it's just our Polish sensibilities ). Thanks for putting it so succinctly.

And I do think a lot of the "Celinaissance" in the last few years was driven by precisely this kind of fan. When you look a the various thought pieces written about her in those years, the fascination seems to be much more centered around her place as a cultural phenomenon than her music per se.

 

 

I see it exactly the same way. Céline is much more than an excellent singer. In addition Célinaissance was the movement led by those who did not think that her career was in crisis after the death of René. On the contrary - without taking anything away from René's intuition as a manager and gambler - we were fascinated by the maturation and liberation of Céline with her "I have nothing to prove" attitude. As if she wasn't afraid of not pleasing everyone anymore - long enough that she hadn't been; the classic example is the fact that the violent reaction of people traumatized her so much after she took a stand against the independence of Quebec in 1992. The opposite example: would she be engaged in Célinununu during René's lifetime? I was impatiently awaiting his choices and his positions which were no longer motivated by "what will people say". But it is true that she freed herself in the field of fashion much more than in music...

 

As for Polish roots, there are quite a few traits that bring us closer to Quebecers

Celine has been imitating Cher for years during sound checks for fun… she knows what’s she’s doing. She’s clearly attempting to sound like Cher. The songs sounds like Cher doing karaoke to Sia, with lyrics that subpar and really do sound like a toddler could’ve wrote them.

 

I don’t hate the song but I don’t like it that much either…. But I guarantee if it was any other singer we wouldn’t be sugar coating it.

Totally disagree. Celine was just not doing high notes and that’s what you are caught up with. You think it sounds weird.

 

I love Celine exploring and after a few listens it feels totally normal.

It's not like people don't know Celine's beat songs. I'm Alive, That's The way It Is, Incredible, FLying On My Own are publicly known. But people just love Celine's voice in ballads, like adele.

It’s not that Celine can’t sing an uptempo she has great uptempos…. The fact that “I’m Alive” is her most watched YouTube video and one of her highest streamed songs says that much… it’s just we want, sorry I’ll clarify (I WANT) her to sound like Celine when she sings them. I love how she delivers Vocals on “I’ll Be” but not soo much on “The Gift”, again it’s not a terrible song it’s just forgettable in my opinion. And trying too hard in my opinion. Tho not perfect, at least something like “The Hard Way” is more CELINE!

For me Love Of My Life is all this. She actually sounds like her normal self.

I became a fan because of the voice, later on its was her personality that struck me.

 

But it will always be the voice.

As for The Gift, I find it a fun song but if I want to hear these kind of songs all the time I would follow Katy Perry, Sia or all the new stuff thats out now.

 

Doesn't mean Celine can't have these kind of uptempo songs. She can, as long as she sounds like herself.

 

. I would personally expect some original ballads with careful productions, mature lyrics, a wide range of instruments (I would love to listen to songs featuring saxophones, or accordion, or violin, or acousitc guitar), and pure vocals - this does not mean I expect 10 seconds sustained belts, but rather her voice being captured in its more authentic form. Just my two cents really and food for thought.

Before anyone knows anything about the songs, gave us the lyrics to “The Gift” and I gave him or her a hard time… saying it can’t be true because the lyrics just don’t add up LOL… well I just want to say I’m sorry and like you said, “I’m eating my words”.

 

However, that person ALSO said they heard the song and Celine did a sample of “Believe” by Cher in the middle of the song….. nobody tell me she doesn’t intend like Cher sometimes, or Sia or Adele…. She’s been doing it for years now.

I totally agree.I honestly don't know how she was able to get through this song. She is not just singing it she means and feels it.Because we know the story we know who this is about.I like the part about the smile. Celine was always talking about Rene's smile and making him laugh.For sure my favorite.

The "Love Again" soundtrack album is currently #70 in the midweek UK Album Chart.

I am not surprised. Courage sold around 700k worldwide and there was some TV promo from Celine, a couple music videos, a tour and the ticket deal.

 

Now we have none of that. We should not expect this release to do anything more than 200k worldwide by the end of its run.

Yes, I know what you mean. Celine is the Queen of Power Ballads and that's her niche, there is no question about that.

Let's turn back the clock to 2003 and the One Heart album. What would have happened if they had released the single Reveal in summer 2003. Average people would have noticed that she is more than a ballad singer. I'm Alive and I Drove All Night were successful, so why not release a more modern Dance hit Reveal to the audience to show a modern/Dance Celine. But instead to take a little risk, they released the ballad Have You Ever Been In Love. Stupid mistake. Because a modern dance hit like Reveal would have opened the door for her other modern hits like Loved Me Back To Life, Somebody Loves Somebody etc.

But no, Celine and her Team are stuck in the 90s.

 

I agree with your take on “Reveal.” But I believe she was contractually obligated to release HYEBIL as a single.
