scielle Posted October 1, 2021 at 02:57 AM Posted October 1, 2021 at 02:57 AM While Irene seems like a very promising choice to helm this, it's concerning Celine & Sony went with a filmmaker who - as far as I can tell - doesn't speak French. How can she possibly tell a "definitive" Celine story, as they claim, if she can't understand half of it? How can she truly do research if she can't, say, read Rene's book, or understand Celine's family, or any of the early footage, the behind the scenes banter, etc, never mind understand the music? There really has got to be a French-speaking producer or co-director involved here. I also wonder how Irene got involved. Did someone at Sony see and love her last film and recruit her that way? Was it the work of her agent and she was brought in as a director-for-hire? Or did she conceive and actively pitch this? Who else was in the running? (That last one we'll never know....lol).From what I can tell she has (or had?) a development deal with HBO, and her company - Vermilion Films - seems to be basically a one-woman show. She produced for CBS news previously, but other than that, it seems she's been indie for years. Very curious to eventually hear how this came to be and what kind of research Irene did / is doing to prep. 2 Quote

Nmj Posted October 1, 2021 at 06:13 AM Posted October 1, 2021 at 06:13 AM So...in a few months? 34 days til Vegas begins. I don’t see it coming before that LOL. However, I have a feeling they have been working on this project for some time already… when they say “production has started” that doesn’t necessarily mean it just now began. Quote
ryba Posted October 1, 2021 at 06:35 AM Posted October 1, 2021 at 06:35 AM Yes, its good promo and showcases her legendary status. Do you think they might include the Spector debacle as a jucy element and Play some of the songs? Quote

I wonder if they will also bring up Rene's r*p* allegations as well from the early 2000s. Quote
comingback Posted October 1, 2021 at 07:16 AM Posted October 1, 2021 at 07:16 AM La Voix Du Bon Dieu was released in November 1981 (40 years ago). So maybe they will release the docu around the opening of the new Vegas show. I think they are already working on the docu. 1 Quote

Well the major benefit would be to launch it with the Vegas show opening day? So if they *are* planning a coordination, it should be a specific important date Quote

Popular Post scielle Posted October 1, 2021 at 11:10 AM Popular Post Posted October 1, 2021 at 11:10 AM (edited) We are in 2021, grandpa.. Google translator are there, she can easily translate it. Celine can give a translated version. No, she can’t. Not several multi-hundred-page books, or hundreds of conversations, decades of audio and video material, and certainly not the poetry of lyrics. Not to mention being able to meaningfully converse with those around Céline nor understand her in a language in which she can express herself much more freely and articulately. And “Céline can give a translated version” of what, exactly? Everything ever said or written about her? Everything she’s done in her life!? Who’s going to pay for all these translations and how many years are you prepared to wait for this doc while they happen? The bread and butter of a documentarian’s work is research, and without French, Irene’s cut off from half of it. Not to mention she can’t connect to Céline or anyone in her orbit at the same level as she would if she understood it. Google translating directions to the bathroom is a far cry from understanding the meaning, nuance and beauty of a language. Edited October 1, 2021 at 11:16 AM by scielle 8 Quote
scielle Posted October 1, 2021 at 11:22 AM Posted October 1, 2021 at 11:22 AM (edited) I hope she's got the freedom to deliver something truly different to all the documentaries we've had of Celine. Denise Bombardier got both full access and creative freedom, and came up with what I think is the best - certainly most objective - Céline book to date. (And no, that one isn’t available in English either). If we get something along these lines but in film form, I’d consider that a win. Edited October 1, 2021 at 11:24 AM by scielle Quote

Alex_Incognito Posted October 1, 2021 at 12:10 PM Posted October 1, 2021 at 12:10 PM Denise Bombardier would be an excellent resource for this film. I am right there with Scielle. Without a francophone producer or researcher, this project is garbage. Quote "People pay 20-25 dollars to see you."- Céline Dion, 1990
maki_Dion-er Posted October 1, 2021 at 02:21 PM Posted October 1, 2021 at 02:21 PM So we're already throwing this project under the bus without knowing anything about the research and preparation Irene has done? I don't speak much French and know all that is needed to know of Celine's French life and career. I'm sure an experienced documentarist like Irene will be able to deliver as much insight into Celine's French life/career as her English. And with Celine being fully involved and wanting this to be the definitive documentary on her life she will probably lend herself to as much as needed to portray that part of herself accurately. 5 Quote

Ah, but how do you know? How can you tell what you're missing? If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? But yes, agreed that if anyone is equipped to handle and appreciate communication barriers, it's Irene, who grew up with deaf parents, has a deaf son, and made several films on the subject of deafness and blindness. ehild Posted October 1, 2021 at 04:52 PM Posted October 1, 2021 at 04:52 PM If it's meant to be an English based doc to be distributed to all audiences I'm not surprised they chose someone who doesn't speak French. She doesn't need to when they can just intertwine things in her career and give an overview. I doubt this will be very career focused as we have a lot of those out there. Yes, it'll highlight a lot of stuff but it's hard to go into very many specific details that span 30-40 years of her life. If it's in response to the unofficial Aline movie, as that one article kinda makes it sound like, I wonder if we'll get more personal details about their story. And what her life is like now without Rene. Maybe that's what she means by a side we haven't seen of her?? If it's English based they'll have someone subtitle it I'm sure.
