Really? I'd say the opposite. She always delivers 'when it's time'. High profile performances like God Bless America (9/11 tribute), Divas Live, her many Oscar performances..were all top notch.

You've seen most of Céline's performances (including less stellar ones) but probably only a handful of Whitney's/Mariah's more successful ones.

Some of Whitney's award perfornances weren't up to par either (her Grammy performances after the 80ies were usually a bit off for whatever reason).

Can't really speak on Mariah, but she's usually a bit meh live?

1995 American Music Awards she didn't nail the Power of Love highest notes

1997 Juno Awards she struggled a bit

1997 Grammys her high note was a bit of a mess

1998 Grammys her voice cracked and it was probably one of her worst MHWGO performances

1999 Oscars was a bit nasal without her best high notes

2001 9/11 tribute her voice cracked for L'amour Existe Encore and there was a ton of rasp in the God Bless America

2004 Grammys she had that whole fiasco but also didn't sing her fullest voice or as much power (the microphone didn't help)

2004 World Music Awards was an example of her worse vocal habits from her early residency, even though there were good moments

2010 Grammys she was a bit shaky on the high notes....she sounded WAY better in rehearsal

2015 BBMAs she was offkey

2016 Her return to Vegas after Rene's passing her first Barbra Streisand medley was vocally not her best by any means (the emotion obviously played a part)

Divas Live she was great, and iirc all of her Oscars performances...minus 1999...were pretty great too. And she's had a couple other awesome award show performances. So, I'm not saying all of them were horrible, but she very often didn't shine or give the caliber that did in her concerts.

Celine has sung a song without being able to hear herself, sang MHWGO at the last second cause Barbara couldn't make it to their duet, sang a song reading the lyrics on paper cause she was called on last minute. She can self correct vocal issues/mistakes on the spot. She can have technical difficulties/wardrobe issues and make a whole fun bit out of it.

If anyone of the trinity works best under pressure it's Celine.

She get nerves or has off days, it's only normal but more often than not she delivers great performances when she has to. In the past few years we've seen her deliver excellent performances at events like the Aretha and Bee Gees tributes, or the Covid special. Divas Live showed Celine being at the top of her game while performing next to one of her idols while Mariah struggled.

I wasn't talking about TV specials or tributes, as I dont think those come with a lot of pressure/viewership/etc. And she is human and has off days, no doubt, but I noticed a lot of her worst performances came during awards shows or other very high pressure situations.

I just think that if Celine had a few more knockout, showstopping performances at those global, high level events, she would probably get a lot more of the praise that she deserves. Before 2016-2017 Billboard Awards, her most memorable performance for the general public was probably 1998 Oscars where she really slayed it. And those 2016/2017 epic performances were lipped.

Can anyone tell me what was the significance of that hand after Rene's death,I don't know much about Celine from 2016 but I've seen that hand in so many places, interviews, backstage, it was also written, "touch the wood with Rene." Something like that.

I think Celine may be bad under pressure. Almost all of her high pressure moments have always had something go wrong with them vocally, at awards shows or tributes.

This is partly why I think in the popular wisdom she is a "worse" singer than Mariah and Whitney

I disagree. I think she is the best under pressure. Best example is the Dance With My Father Grammy performance. She couldn't hear herself, but she managed to deliver an amazing performance. And of course her Eurovision performance, the others Oscar and Grammy performances and the 9/11 tributes.

+ Of course, some of these performances were not perfect, because she was emotional or there were technical issues. But thank god she is a human and I love the emotional performances of the 9/11 tributes or the Dance With My Father performance. Edited by comingback

She is totally professional, but I am talking about vocal performance. The 2004 performance is a bit of a fluke because of the technical issues, but I listed 10+ other examples.

The 9/11 tributes her voice cracked! And Eurovision she did very well, but not as good as she did in rehearsals. She is very consistently better in rehearsals, which points to the idea that the pressure affects her vocal performance to make her do worse than she otherwise would. It's happened multiple times.

Do you guys know where to find full show bootleg of her residency show in las vegas back in 2013? Someone is requesting it on YouTube named as Alex Bodi.

Maybe Celine oracle/Puravida can help? :)

Rene and Celine were both a bit superstitious, and would very often touch wood. And Celine and Rene shared a hand gesture only between them as a couple, and in addition Celine would almost always touch the thumbs of her band/crew before a show for good luck and to shake off nerves...this included Rene. So she got a hand caste out of metal so that they could repeat the rituals after his passing.

But I think Celine explained it properly in an interview or two somewhere, but can't remember exactly.

That reminds me, she was also recently mentioned by drag queens in separate occassions on the internet. One of them was saying someone looked like a "healthy Celine Dion" .....

I have sometimes seen pictures that fans have posted online of Celine's early vinyl records inside record shops in Montreal. Does anyone have any good record shops to recommend? Also, would these shops sell Celine's Unison LP there too, or just her French catalogue? Any help would be appreciated for any future trips to Montreal! :)

Awesome question. Related to this, I was wondering if any forum members live in Montreal or Ottawa?

I completely agree. She did "good, when it was time to be good," like at the Tokyo and Eurovision Song Contests, and on some of the important early late night American TV shows. However, it's gone wrong plenty of times. Though, she has spent a long time in the spotlight.

Yeah, they've explained themselves plenty of times... but it's still kind of weird. I like when that old man Quebecer comedian who does satirical impressions of her included it in one of his skits. Anyone else remember that?

Much of my family lives in both areas, and I've often visited. In Montreal I always get the hot gossip on Celine. I remember my aunt showing me Celine's parent's old house in Rosemere. I think it was the one she lived in herself, in the 80s?

That old man comedian, what is his name? He has done some funny skits.

And the reason I ask is because if you or your family ever get the chance, I think a visit to the national archives of both Quebec/Canada and the CBC in Ottawa/Montreal are a great way to get Celine footage or content. I looked online in their directories and they have records of soooo much Celine stuff that we have never seen.

Never realised Celine released Unison in the United States on September 11th.

I wonder how much Celine spends. For all her massive wealth, she doesn't seem to splurge on luxurious vacations or restaurants (that we know of). I hope she gifts herself luxury spa stuff a lot.
