I don't know if this has been covered before - frankly, going through 434 pages is a lengthy process - but I was wondering, does Celine have US citizenship? It would make sense, since she's been living in the States since, if not earlier, 2003.

I've always thought about this also? Who knows?

Well Celine's Unison album came out in 1990 which was her big break into the United States. Celine didn't really stay in Canada that much after the release of Unison. With tours and stuff.

I know she still had a house in Montreal that she bought for her parents and she lived there with them. I think she lived with her parents until she married Rene in 1994.

Since Celine released her first two English albums pretty close together and did tours for both albums, then went on to have many more successful albums and tours to follow, she would have been away from Canada for a long time.

When you are in the United States more then you are in Canada I think that would make you a US citizen, but I don't really know how that works. I think Celine must have dual citizenship, which makes her both Canadian and an American citizen, but I really don't know. I have kinda always wondered this myself.

If Celine did change her citizenship I think it would have been around 1991 - 1994.

This NYT article says she's a Canadian citizen, though I suppose she could be dual, or have some kind of permanent visa to be in the US. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/02/us/02bodyguard.html?_r=0.

It's an interesting article . . .I wonder, too, about the work visas for all the people from Quebec that they have working on the show in Vegas -- not to mention the legalities of taking their huge team around the world during the tours. They must have paid a lot of lawyers a lot of money.

She's not a US citizen. She's a permanent resident. Her kids are citizens.

You have to apply to be a citizen and do the oath. She hasn't done this.

Yeah the kiddos are automatic citizens because they were born here. If she did take the oath I would think there would of been some fanfare about it and some ridicule from some stating she was selling out. I mean look what happens to the poor woman when she talks politics.

What I wonder is how often she has to get a visa renewed or how does that work for entertainers.

it would be a scandal in Canada, and in Quebec also. Canadian would say that she is a traitor to the nation as many quebecers can be :giggle: and Quebecers would tell she's sold herself. . Right or not, she would not do this. But i think , that people in USA are great , i don't have the same regard for their governement

Every 10 years for PRs. And yes, there would be a big debate if she became a US citizen.

I do not know her legal status. No one on this board knows her status.

Becoming a citizen is more than an oath. There are requirements that must be met. None of this should be taken lightly. Consult a lawyer.

I do not want to write too many details, because I do not want anyone to rely on a thread they find on the Internet for legal information. Get a lawyer!

She may be a dual citizen by now. But, the choice is very individual and can depend on a myriad of factors.

I was going to add more information, but it all came off as being too specific. The short and best answer is: for any immigration question, consult a licensed attorney who practices immigration law. It is simply not possible to provide a generic answer to an immigration question (at least, not a helpful answer). For example, the above comment regarding lawful permanent resident status expiring is not exactly accurate. I would explain, but it requires too many details.

She is probably a resident of Canada or a dual citizen. But, that would depend. There are taxes to consider, so maintaining a Canadian citizenship or residence for tax purposes could be costly (as she is certainly taxed in the US on any money she earns both in the US and abroad).

Her children are American citizens by birth, but they are likely dual citizens.

A lot (I have no idea how many) of entertainers use O Visas; O Visas are nonimmigrant visas (again, leaving out details on purpose. Get a lawyer if you want an O Visa).

I find it kinda weird how she is staying at that specific place, because my cousin has been there by invitiationm before and he says there are no places to stay...it is just a golf club with a resteraunt and place to play golf of course haha.

Et je t'aime encore, comme dans les chansons banales...

I'm not sure anybody would try to take legal/immigration advice from a Celine Dion forum...

Haha you would be surprised! But, my bigger concern was not people on this forum per se, but more so people just doing a Google search on an immigration issues and finding this thread (hence why I was so insistent on people just getting a lawyer. The post was meant more as general information, but then I became concerned with who might stumble on the thread). Sadly, when people just need help, they tend to look anywhere. This is also why I avoided specifics. Immigration is an area of the law that really does require legal advice, from someone who practices immigration law (i.e. not just any lawyer who decides to take a random immigration case. But, someone with immigration law experience).

That is an interesting article. I remember reading it when it first came out. I wonder what happened with Nick's case? Obviously it all worked out because he is still working for Celine, but I wonder what he had to do to be able to stay, since the court didn't rule in his favor in the article?

Celine must have done something to get him to stay, but to my knowledge there were never any follow articles about his case. I'm so glad he was able to still work for Celine though. I love Nick. He is my favorite bodyguard that Celine has ever had.

I liked Eric to. I miss him. I would have been so sad if Nick ended up not working with Celine. All the Celine fans seem to know him by name and have a good connection with him. He always takes the time out to help the fans and he is such a nice guy. I wouldn't want anyone else protecting Celine.

Haha there're a few left yes. But don't make a trip for this cause you'll be very disapointed. Celine sold those restaurants looong time ago. They only kept the name, a few pics of Celine (but there are more of Elvis i think lol) and the famous celine dion chocolate cake, thats it.

Her Las Vegas contract sounds better and better.

Prior to embracing Las Vegas five nights a week, 40 weeks a year with her first show, "A New Day," Celine and Rene were based in Florida.

They were living in Florida. Then we built them that house. We built The Colosseum, but we also built them a house on Lake Vegas. Actually, we built the house three times. I won't go into that one.

So there's more then one Nickels restaurant, Is there still one located in Montreal? I still want to go there and try that Celine Dion chocolate cake. LOL.

I also want to see the pics they have of her in the restaurant. I'm curious to know if they are pics I have never seen before.

There appear to be 7 restaurants in the Montreal area, according to the official website http://nickelsdeli.com/sample-page-3/ :)

Ohhh, you guys are sooo fortunate that you can say, I'll have it next time. Look where I'm living, thousands of kilometers away, never see anything of her on our tv here, never able to see any shows of her. The only way I see ANYTHING of her is on this forum. So thanks very very much to everyone who uploads everything about Celine's shows and interviews etc, etc. I really do appreciate it a lot. You have no idea what it means to me. Thanks, love you guys.
