Thank you! I've been looking for that Oprah show forever - it had disappeared from YouTube for awhile. I think it's probably my favorite of her many Oprah appearances -- Celine and Rene both radiated such joy . .and when Rene brought RC on -- such a cute/sweet family! Love it!

I know! I couldn't find it...

Similar version to what I have

http://www.tudou.com...ew/ICEMhfahYMI/

All I get is writing in Chinese (sorry to offend the Chinese if that isn't Chinese writing :giggle: )

It won't work for me :(

It works for me...hmm :hmm:

I'll look again and if I can't find a better version, I'll upload my crappy version to youtube lol I don't even remember where I downloaded it from.

edit: I think I got it from lavoixdor, but that site has shut down.

NBC is notorious for pulling their videos off of YouTube. Especially if they didn't upload it themselves.

Anytime I read an excerpt from this book or something about it, it all reads to me like a jumble of bullshit. There's way too much going on with the way it's worded that it gives me a headache. It's like reading one of KareBear's posts.

I've read the whole book, and I think it's actually really interesting and well-written. He comes at it from a unique perspective -- usually people either (1) adore Celine and gush about how amazing she is or (2) they can't stand her, say she's horrible, and make fun of her without really thinking about it. Carl Wilson really does not like her music -- but he actively undertook trying to understand why other people love it.

Yes, there's a lot of theory in the book about the nature of taste, subjectivity, and the role of sentimentality in music (apparently it's a book that's used in college courses), but there's also a lot about Celine herself, and I found it fascinating. He places Celine in a social context, in terms of being a French-Canadian minority, how that affects the way she's viewed, and her place in the different streams of Quebec's music tradition. He talks about her appeal all around the world, and the different ways she's viewed in different countries; and he conducts in-depth interviews with fans about their perceptions of Celine. He acknowledges how good her French music is, discovers that he likes some of the English stuff (he realllly likes The Reason; even likes IACBTMN), and (to his own surprise) enjoys her Vegas concert when he goes to see her live.

But the biggest reason I like the book is that I love Celine the person even more than Celine the singer -- and I think that Carl, as someone who was most definitely not a fan of Celine's music, grew to like Celine the person as he learned more about her. One of my favorite parts of the book is the story about Elliott Smith, who also sang at the '98 Oscars. Smith couldn't stand Celine's music, and expected her to act like a big-shot star, but "she was really sweet . . . which has made it impossible for me to dislike Celine Dion." Celine was kind and encouraging to him, and gave him a big hug, which he said "was too human to be dismissed simply because I find her music trite." As I read this, I thought, "Yes! This is why I love Celine!"

I also heard Carl in a radio interview on the book (I'm pretty sure it's available on iTunes) . .the interviewer asked him what he would say if he ever met Celine, asking it in a somewhat snide, "wouldn't-that-be-terrible" tone . .and Carl said something to the effect that he had gotten fond of Celine over the course of this project . ..that she had somehow managed to retain a certain naturalness and little-sister-like persona despite her celebrity . ..which is both why she is targeted for jokes and why she is so lovable.

For a more intellectual exploration of why people love Celine, and her place in music, I think this is a really, really good book. Just my two cents.

Thanks for your review! I love reading about social theory, but I never read this book because I didn't want to read a book that just tore into a singer for the sake of selling a book. But, your review makes it sound more balanced that I had imagined. I might read it after all.

Celine's signed Lindt Gold Bunny sold for 1730.00 dollars on ebay (auction closed today). Last year, it sold for about 830.00 dollars. Based on the information that can be seen (as not all of it is viewable), I think the same person who bought it last year bought it this year. So, either a big fan or a person buying them to re-sell later? I would only buy it from the ebay auction, I am not sure I would trust it coming from anywhere else. Plus, the ebay auction gives money to charity.

I hope she signs another one next year!!! I didn't win this year, sadly. But, hopefully next year! I bet they ask her to sign another one at least. I am pretty sure her signed Lindt Gold Bunny raised the most amount of money this year.

Today at World Disney Resort,Florida

The girl's face in that picture is pricless, and honestly makes the photograph. I am not making fun-- I think I would look about the same if I just happened to run into Celine Dion in a place I didn't expect, haha. On second thought, I am certain I would be worse. I always tell myself when I go shopping in Vegas, that she might be there. So I feel prepared for that. But, just seeing her at Disney or some place else...yeah. I bet I would make an idiot of myself. Not by talking to her, I just mean my reaction in general. I would not actually go up to her if I happened to see her out. But, I don't think that would stop me from being that person she reenacted on Oprah that "oh my gosh, that's Celine Dion" person, you know, just in case she forgot who she was, haha.

On another note, I doubt anything is actually wrong if she is still taking the kids on Disney trips! So, good! People (including myself here) who were beginning to wonder what was up, I think the answer is: a vacation ^_^

I live near Celine's Jupiter home and I look for her everywhere I go. And I know people who have seen her around but I'm never one of those people. I would just stare and then run away if I saw her so I dunno why I care.

I saw that! I think if there was a Celine themed episode it would be super cool. Part of me doesn't necessarily want certain cast members to sing her songs but that's just me. It's so cute how much Lea loves her, I always love her covers of Celine's songs. :)

yeah i was wondering what was going on too w/ her & rene since they had been m.i.a. for a few months since the story about rene having cancer came out, then recently they dropped the price of her florida home which i also seen as a little bit odd & shocking for her to do, so i was thinking that something really bad has happened but celine & rene & her team just didnt want the media to know about it & all... but like u, im glad to see that since celine & rene & co. are @ disney world right now it shows that they are all doing well, especially rene who seems to be doing alot better since hes able to walk around disney world, which when i went there when i was a kid, the park was huge & massive, & that was back in the 1990s since i last visited there so who know how even bigger & massive disney world is now lol...

& i agree w/ u about reacting to seeing celine in public if that ever happened to me, most likely i wouldnt be able to say anything @ first either excep for maybe hello or something, since i would probably be too nervous to say much else lol... & i would be that way w/ any celebrity, not just celine, since i have never met any celebrities before & im not the most outgoing person ever, especially when it comes to talking to new people who i dont know that well... heck why do u think it took me over 2 years to get the courage to start using this forum lol... i mean i was reading the conversations on here for over 2 years but i didnt have the courage to write on here until much later because i was too shy & afraid to write on a public forum & chat w/ strangers, no offense to anybody lol... so if i ever did see celine or any other celeb, i would probably not say much either. i would be too stunned & nervous to say anything, i would most likely just stand up w/ my jaw dropped down to the floor, say hello then just walk away after standing in shock & looking @ her i guess lol...

I just saw a special on t.v. about Veronic. To be honest, she isn't that great. Veronic does some okay impressions of certain singers, but overall she doesn't really nail any of the artists voices. Veronic sounds a little like Celine in All By Myself, but she does this weird sound with her voice that Celine doesn't do.

I'm not saying Veronic isn't talented, she actually has a pretty good voice. When it comes to impressions though, I have heard other people do better.

Yep- she did MHWGO and to be honest it really didn't sound like Celine. She can sound like some people but to do 50 voices? I don't think that's the best idea.

Really off topic but..Ginette Reno sang the 'O Canada' tonight for the 3rd playoff game between the Habs and Lightning. She did a great job really blew the roof off the Bell Centre and was given a great reaction by those in attendance.
