tonybower Posted July 7, 2019 at 05:31 PM Posted July 7, 2019 at 05:31 PM (edited) I must be a bad vocal fan but many of the examples of "INSANE vocals" in the beginning of the clip sounds to me quite strained and as she is running out of beath. No strain, just heavily compressed vocals. She never sounds good singing Im Alive or TTWII anymore. Her darker, froggier tone combined with lowered keys makes them unappealing and bad sounding to me. Imo TTWII would sound better in a higher key, as the higher the notes are the less she sounds dark and froggy. But from the IACBTMN rehersal clip onward it all sounds great to me On the whole... I love her vocal evolution. She has so much resonance and who knew songs like The Reason could sound as good today as they did 20 years ago (if not better)? I'm not a voice expert, but I feel Celine is in perfect control right in the middle and sounds better here than before. Sometimes her runs are not as super smooth as they were in the 90s, but her head voice is exquisite. However, I have to agree that *sometimes* I'm not as excited as most when I watch these 'amazing vocals' videos... Sometimes I hear screechiness, sometimes I feel she leaps to the higher register (because this is higher than ever) as though the journey to get there isn't so easy anymore. And when she performs songs like those you highlighted, she does so from a place of habit/comfort. She has been singing them for so long now that it's like auto-pilot, whether it's the best technique or not. And as for the electric guitar during Purple Rain, does anybody else feel it sometimes sounds like the monkey enclosure at the zoo?? I'm exaggerating, and I have read reviews of her shows were people go wild for it, but I don't get it... I love that people are (re)discovering Celine at this point in her career and the whole world seems to be fan-girling her right now, but I wish she'd had this recognition in the early 90s-2000s when vocally, she was an unparalleled genius. I kind of wish we could have this new Celine (richer, stronger, fuller voice with wider (?) range) mixed with a younger Celine (diamond precision, crystal clarity, technical perfection). I'm not trying to criticise - if I'm honest, there's so much about her current sound that I prefer when compared to her old sound. When I fear she might be losing her voice, I watch clips from the 2000s and compare with today and I'm left speechless - so much of it sounds so much better. I know that the voice naturally evolves as we age, but I saw Gladys Knight a few weeks ago and she sounds exactly she she did in the 60s. Do you ever wonder what Celine would sound like if she did not perform as much and obsessed about her vocal chords and technique as much as she did in her 20s? I'm not wishing this disciplined joyless lifestyle on her again - but just imagine what the result might be! tonybower Posted July 7, 2019 at 05:35 PM Posted July 7, 2019 at 05:35 PM Celine needs to leave PQTMQ alone, as it was When I first heard the changes she had made to PQTME I was horrified. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was like she wanted to sabotage the song. But then I saw it live in Vegas a few weeks ago, and it actually worked! I can't explain how, but it did. On Friday, some changes worked less well and people around me seemed confused as they tried to sing along, but on the whole I think it is okay. Having said that, it's such a classic that I don't think she should mess around with it too much. If she's tired of singing it, she should lay it to rest for a while. Maybe she will give it a break during the US leg of her world tour, and bring it out again in its intended fashion, once she is in Europe. scielle Posted July 7, 2019 at 05:45 PM Posted July 7, 2019 at 05:45 PM And as for the electric guitar, does anybody else feel it sometimes sounds like the monkey enclosure at the zoo?? I love it! It's the only reason I don't mind Purple Rain being in the set list. But it seems to be a very binary thing - people either love or hate it (I believe it was the only thing the Telegraphy review docked her a star for, actually.) I love it when she does her instrument imitations and improv in general. Wish she did more. Wish she'd scat more, too. It's so much better hearing these songs with her improv rather than straight - if you want that, go listen to the record. Her playing with these songs is the only thing that makes LCMM, RDMH, PQTME worthwhile at this point. So I say "the more, the better". 5 Quote
fred Posted July 7, 2019 at 06:32 PM Posted July 7, 2019 at 06:32 PM (edited) I keep on repeating myself (and will continue) about how superb The Reason has turned out to be lately. Starting from last year it has risen above anything it's been before. I've never thought it worked live before and frankly I was hoping for her to completely let it go or do some drastic changes (like building the choruses from a soft one in the beginning of the song to a full power one at the end). But somehow (and despite the cringy trumpets in the refrain - I'm not all against horns: I looooove the ones at the intro and outro). Can someone please help me put the finger on what has changed about The Reason. From being a boorefest it has become THE highlight of her current setlist (even when TT is around). On the whole... I love her vocal evolution. She has so much resonance and who knew songs like The Reason could sound as good today as they did 20 years ago (if not better)? EDIT:And on the "vocal debate" I am so glad she has left all the "screaming" from the TC tour behind her. I like very much how she sounds now, her runs at the end of IACBTM and in the beginning of Ashes for example are soooo dreamy. Edited July 7, 2019 at 06:35 PM by fred 1 Quote Peace and love to all.

She’s obviously fallen in love with the song, its evident when she loves or is new to a song she will put her all into it. We were all used to seeing her do songs which bored her, so she stopped putting effort in and became lazy, its been a long time since we’ve seen her enjoy a song this much and put vocal effort into it because she enjoys it. When she puts the effort in, her energy and the vocals themselves feed each other, making it an EXPERIENCE. 1 Quote
fred Posted July 7, 2019 at 06:45 PM Posted July 7, 2019 at 06:45 PM That's why I promt that she'd lay down the "common reportoire" at least for some concerts. If the hits needs to be there put them in a medley or use a remix (imagine of of the TLYM ones performed around FOMO) and do the rest of the show with only "inspired" songs. To me one offs shows like this could be an opportunity for it (hense why I'm disapointed when the same old gets performed in such events. And as much as I love live releases, there's really not much point in having tons of releases with the same songs. Hence why im dying for an Anti-Tour Quote Peace and love to all.

Listening doing her soundcheck and hear some tiny little different things is soooo much more worth than the same record played. Even BYLM and IACBTMN were great.
