It's hard to believe it's been a month since Rene passed. Hoping that Celine, the boys, and Rene's older children and grandchildren are doing the best they can.

I'm reading this book about how what we eat affects our health, specifically what causes cancer to develop. It's T. Colin Campbell's The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health.

 

I'm at the part where Campbell talks about the meat preservative sodium nitrite and how animal testing has shown that the rats that have been given higher levels of this cancer-causing preservative used in meat all of them have died from throat cancer.

 

I can't help but link Rene-Charles mentioning in his eulogy how he enjoyed smoked meat with Rene and the fact that Rene died from throat cancer. I wish Rene and Celine have read this book before anything happened. The more you know...

 

That aside, I'm really impressed with how Rene organized every detail of his memorial service, just like he organized Celine's career. Also impressed with Celine and how she handled herself during these awful times for her. I'll never regret having been her fan, she's just a good person, fit for a role model to anyone (unlike so many other artists who are a mess in real life).

Yeah, foods play a big role but I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere a long time ago that Rene used to be a heavy cigarette smoker but stopped smoking after he had his heart attack in 1992.

 

Now, I can't find any information about whether or not he really was a cigarette smoker so the whole ''heavy smoker'' thing could just have been a rumor and not an actual fact, but if Rene really used to be a cigarettes smoker, this is what most likely caused his throat cancer.

Maybe they began to use the sign back then. It was the first time in which René couldn't be with her all the time. Just guessing...

I think the LV was more of a way to show their secret love for each other. Remember, in 1992 their love was still very secret and since they couldn't go couch-jumping proclaiming their love a la Tom Cruise, this was their only way to publicly acknowledge it. It's so romantic... I'm determined to see if I can't find her flashing it even earlier than 1992

I just watched the Behind the Scenes before the 1991 Wintergarden show and it shows Céline and René doing their little ritual handshake, but no LV.... so they must have started it sometime between March 1991 and May 1992 when she appeared on Regis and Kathie Lee.

Not necessarily. Doubt they'd have done it in front of the cameras to each other. But celine doing it down the camera lens is different. They wouldn't have aroused suspicion lol

But this wasn't really "in front of the cameras," a lot of her behind the scenes stuff was filmed for news programs, etc. At this point I doubt if she even noticed when the cameras were on her. We all know how superstitious Céline was... I doubt she would've not done the LV just because the camera was there. She's standing there touching thumbs with everyone, no one would've batted an eye at a quick hand gesture after she shook her manager's hand.

That's a good point, I guess I was thinking more about the cameras noticing, not the band and the other crew members around them. I wonder when they added the LV to her pre-show ritual? I don't think there's any right or wrong here... all just speculation. It's just fun to try and piece together the beginning of their romance since we're all such big fans of their love story

I've read the same thing, in the book The Complete Biography, that she wanted to stay with him but he didnt let her because of her career. So maybe it was then it all started!

Exactly. That's grief for you. Loads of people at work said the same thing to me. I just said "you only see me here. You have no idea how I am when I go home to an empty house and close the door." But celine is lucky in a way. Like she says, Rene wouldn't want her to hide away etc. Incentive 1 for her right there. She's lucky she has family with her most of the time. Incentive 2. And the boys are incentive 3. Especially the twins because they will make her laugh regularly!

We all know what incentive 4 is - yep US! Her audiences.
