So, how was it? the production? I really can't wait for the preview )

SA it's ok... Attendre, Si je n'ai rien de toi and Moi Quand Je Pleure are great... But... some others, like Que Toi Au Monde... Tacky, annoying, terible. When she sings "Mais qu’est-ce que t’as fait de tes deux bras" it's probably one of the worst lyrics ever.

 

For me, it's D'eux and 1F&4T <3

"Sans attendre" has several great songs that I always love to listen, but there are also few that ruin the final impression of the album. "Que toi au monde" is one of them. "L'amour peut prendre froid" as well.

I don't like it so much... I love si je n'ai rien de toi, but if I was the producer, i would make she re-record. It's kinda like Didn't know love. The song is great. I get it that she wanted to make the vocals kinda of fragile.. but....

The one I downloaded was - required a password.

 

In terms of "feeding the beast" which someone accused me of earlier - I would've purchased the album anyway. I make no apologies for wanting to hear it NOW - excitement!!

Weird. In the introduction, he says that this album is going to last but when he lists all the songs, he finds most of them not that good. haha

 

That's not true. The journalist only finds two songs a bit banal. There are a few others where he criticises a particular minor aspect while overall appreciating the song. And he is really impressed by 6 of them. So, on balance, a very good result, in line with the 4 stars awarded.

I always skip Que toi au monde (actually the only song I skip in Sans attendre, next with La mer et l'enfant). I think I have listened it in full only 3 times since the album was released. Can't believe this song came from Mr Luc Plamondon

He told us he was so struck by NMQP and he kept going on how Celine needed a song like that from herself and that he was going to write it. Either he can't write anymore, or the songs he proposed where sh!t in their eyes, and all they could think of was a cover of an old song (maybe Celine just recorded that one to keep him happy)

It all comes down to taste, and I kinda agree with the writer. I barely listen to SA. Except for maybe 2 songs... Most songs are good, but they don't really stand out... And album IMO is really good, if you can still listen to it/most songs years later. 1F&4T is far superior IMO, D'elles is better too..

 

Mathias, is there a big difference between booklets in LP and deluxe version?

Who writes that as a first sentence? Maybe to show he's unbiased, which could help Celine in a way haha

 

It's probably my least favourite french album.

Can't agree about Sans Attendre... I can't stand the duets, but almost every other song on it seems really great to me. IMO, Sans Attendre is on par with D'elles and both of them are just a bit less exciting than D'eux.

Hope EUS will be at least as good as SA

It's a matter of personal taste anyway. I am loyal to JNQTAM actually though it seems to be one of the least favorite songs on the forum from SA :-) what I skip on SA are: Le Miracle, The duets, Moi Quad Je Pleure and Les Petits Pieds de Lea. Everything else is fine. Anyway, for me it's quite hard to chose my favorite album: I adore D'eux, but D'elles is the one I feel the necessity to listen to much more frequently... SSDA has lots of fabulous songs, but I rarely play it from the beginning to the end. They are all too complex to choose only one.

I guess this topic has become a place to discuss all Celine's French material of the last two decades

I am surprised how many people skip that many songs on that many different albums. I may like less some song or even not like it but I listen to an album like an album, in full. I just never turn on L'eau again...

Definitely don't share the majority view here about Sans attendre being disappointing - I happen to think it's her second finest French album of all-time, ranking only behind S'il Suffisait D'aimer & slightly ahead of D'eux.

 

Her vocals are silky smooth and I love the melodies so much - I think I hold a soft spot for the era because I lived through three whole months of absolute chart slayage from the greatest singer of my lifetime, possibly of any lifetime. And it all felt so seamless.

 

If her new album is half as good as Sans attendre, I'll be elated - if her new era is half as successful as Sans attendre, I'll be elated.

 

2016 has probably been the roughest ever year for our Céline - I hope the new album reflects some of the pain and joy she's had this year and I hope that it becomes a seminal release for her. What we've heard so far certainly points towards a classic.

Well that's it then. Most of the enjoyment to love/hate a song comes when you understand the lyrics in full. I happened not to like some of her French songs when I was learning the language, and some melodies that said nothing to me before, came to be one of my favourite songs of her in French because of the message

 

Even today, not until I have the booklet in my hands and I'm translating the lyrics, I don't get the full enjoyment of the song, and that happened to me still with Sans attendre album. I'm not fluent in French but I can understand most of it if I can read it, so when I got to Attendre song for example, when the music said nothing to me inititally, I totally became in love with the song when I understood the lyrics

 

It depends on what you give more importance also. What weighs more, the music or the lyric? I used to think it was 70-80% the melody when I started listening to music, but now I would say lyrics are definitely very important too. So to me it's fifty-fifty now.

I would like to add that of course there's no need to understand French to enjoy her French songs, as with any other language.

 

However, trying to like/dislike her French material, or keeping some songs and ruling out others because of the language barrier, it's like trying to describe a painting without naming the colours. You only get half the experience and half the pleasure in my opinion

L'eau is one of my top favorite songs! It is interesting to read who skips which songs. I'll admit there are many Celine songs I don't often use on my playlists, but if I'm listening to the entire CD, I typically won't skip anything. There are always exceptions.

 

Regarding Le miracle, I do wish we could have a version sans children's choir.... I find the lyrics inspiring, and the tune is fun....

 

Who here likes children's choirs as part of Celine's tracks? Seriously, I'd really like to know if there are people who enjoy it - Le miracle, LTAL (although, it was nice how her team invited the school choirs to her perform in the concerts), I like the use of adult choirs though... Sorry this is so off topic!

I quite like SA. I don't understand French either but I always try and figure out the lyrics/English translations. One thing I love about her French albums is that I can listen to them the first time or several times and just concentrate on the music, melody, her voice, etc for a while then I figure out the translation.

Children's choirs tend to grate on my nerves. However, I don't mind it so much in LTAL.

Yes we got the lyric video today but it's nothing new... The video is nice but it's like a week away and we have heard nothing really....
