Never saw this before . .the press conference right after Eurovision song contest. Super interesting. Celine openly admitting that she wanted to win, that she wants to be popular internationally . . .for so many years, she's downplayed her ambition, talking about being a mom and picking her own tomatoes or whatever -- it's so interesting to see how openly ambitious she was when she was young. And so interesting to watch Rene defend her . .having to explain how popular she was in Canada, why it was legit for her to be representing Switzerland, etc. I also think his French accent was a lot stronger then than it was later on.

Of course, we all know what happened later that night.

I've realised Celine is really great in that upper humming register. Can't describe any better. Like the ending of Call the man. The tone is so great.

Many talk about how high/low an artist sing but I find that pretty uninteresting. I think the tone is more important. Many artist probably sing better, better technique, wider range and whatever than Celine but without a great tone it doesn't matter. In that aspect Celine trumps many other artists. Imho. ;)

I'm alive @2:50 where is that performance from?

This is from a larger video, recently released as far as I know, where you can see a whole "home video" of the entire night, even leading up to Celine and Rene waiting for the elevator at the hotel after the whole evening. I remember thinking it was funny we now can see them just minutes before their first kiss that started it all.

She is the only artist who I've heard use humming successfully and beautifully, especially in such a dynamic way...no matter how high or low. But you're right, her tone is amazing. I think her amazing control is what sets her apart too....all of the parts are working simultaneously in her voice, under her command.

That’s why no one can do that titaning humming at the end better. Only Céline but she’s playing with it now since 2015. I prefer the original humming. Way more emotional and beautiful.

i prefer this (original)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCn2Fj3rpNE

especially, this one (the dynamics of this is amazing. Controlling the volume of her humming)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Mmuht0chbs

and not like this (i hate it! I think the only thing she needs to do is bark at the end)

Awesome thanks! :)

I remember thinking it was really weird for Celine to be at a jazz festival. I can't think of any song that is anywhere near jazz.

Here is the full performance if anyone want. ;)

Haha "bark"! :-D

But yeah I agree prefer the original. The last one is a miss. It sounds weird. I can see her doing it that way to mix things up. For herself after singing the song for +20 years and for the audience to hear something different. But it doesn't work. Some things should remain as or close to the original. I think the same goes for The prayer on Courage tour. The last part isn't as "remixed" as MHWGO but it's a slight difference which is fine but still would be way better if it stayed as the original. As she did on the earlier shows on the Courage tour.

I mean, sometimes she can make it great (playing with the notes by humming) but mostly, NOPE! So, i think she should just go with the original humming so the emotions will be consistent, so people will say "it was good! it was so good!" :)

It's probably just me but I can't help but hearing a scream. As with most if not all the audition shows out there like American idol etc. Sure I'm biased in this case but with big hits it's hard not to compare. They might be good singers but there is nothing to it. I feel they just sing the songs not performing. Like the phillipino guy who made it with The prayer. I didn't think it was THAT spectacular as everyone thinks. Although I thought it was great that the song in itself got exposure as with all Celine covers. Sorry.

Yup agree! Either it's really great or really not nothing in between. And most times close to the original is the best.

I don’t mind the creative humming at the end of MHWGO, sometimes it’s quite beautiful. What does drives me mad is how she changes PQTME. That’s a song that she should not touch one bit. If she’s too bored of singing it 100% like the original, she should lip it. All JJG songs are perfect when performed EXACTLY the way he intended them to be performed. The slightest note change can ruin everything.

Well, in that very first English interview she did with the CBC at 15 or so, she explicitly said she wants to be an international star. That was as direct as it gets. Her English was so basic then she didn’t have the vocabulary or grammar to diplomatically dress up her ambition!

But yes, I think that ambition is partly what made Rene go to bat for her so much. He knew she’s dedicated and wasn’t going to flake. I recall some quote from him sayings something to the effect of how Ginette Reno has other priorities - she wanted a family, a life, etc., whereas Celine (at the time) was singularly focused and extremely driven.

I think MHWGO is a perfect song to play around with...the chance for melodies is endless. The harmonies on the video entrance she has for it on the Courage Tour are soooo mesmerizing. Although I do find the original good when she does an extremely long fading out hum, but she hasn't always recreated that live anyway. She has shortened it---the original is an 18 second continuous note! Edited by PuraVida

I said something similar about another interview, but she was a bit older. I'll quote myself (lol):

"I guess if one was to ever criticize Celine, it's that all she ever wanted was fame! :giggle: This interview is the closest one gets to seeing that she really did want to be famous and internationally successful above all else--granted, in her chosen field of singing.

Also, so bold of her to consciously compare herself to Whitney and Barbra at her young age. We know she is outwardly so humble most of the time, but I think inside of her she really knew she was as good as any of them."

I think she plays around great in the verses. But that original last bit fits so great with song and as an ending.

Oh is the original 18 sec. long. Have never really thought about the length only the way she sing it. Can you link or name a show where she does the full length or at least close to full length. Also can you name one example where she shortens it?

Would be appreciated since I've never thought about it I want to compare how it sounds. :)

Agree sometimes small things can have big overall impact of a song.

You don't like it as she sings it now or recently compared to say Live in Paris?

Live in Paris.

Hyde park.

Courage tour.

Yeah you're right and after some digging on Youtube I found Columbus also.

From memory I thought it was more shows she did that but it wasn't.

By original I meant in the studio version, she doesn't take a breath between the full hum. I don't mind if she takes a breath, but I want her to do the full 18 seconds of humming in pretty much the exact way it was sung. At least, that's how it sounds best to me. Here is the original for now where humming starts at 4:12

Here at the CBS special you can see her shorten it starting at 2:35...
