Beg to disagree.

By definition, cannibalization refers to a drop in the sales of one product as a result of concurrent introduction of similar product with an overlapping target customer base, thus resulting in a reduced combined market share. Would not be a good move for Sony from a sales perspective. And while many on here would disagree, their audience bases do overlap (albeit certainly not in my case!)

 

In any case, on further research it seems that this Mariah record is actually coming out on her own label, so not a Sony release. Thus my initial point is moot anyway.

 

I know what cannibalization is, but in the music bizz, it's not really that big of a deal (not like in the movie or tv industry), especially with only a handful of major labels. When EUS was released, Sony also released Barbra's new album and Britney's (and more). It wouldn't be good if Sony had only 1 big artist in the top 10, it makes a whole lot of difference if all 10 would be Sony's. Especially these days. It's also the same with singles...artists used to release one every few months (otherwise they would cannibalize each other, but now a lot of artists release singles one after the other or even 2 at the same time.

 

Btw, Mariah has her own label, but she has signed a joint partnership with Epic (which is a Sony Music label). So her new album will still be released/distributed by (in the end) Sony.

Mariah hasn't been with Sony since 2001.

I don't know man. I assumed she was with Sony given the Tommy Mottola connection, but it's not like I follow her so that may have since changed. But I saw an article today saying she's got a new manager and her next record is coming out on her own label. Don't know how reliable that is and I truly don't care enough to dig in to corroborate and find out.

The thing with this new Mariah's song is that is not her first single. Just a buzz... and with a video, that's why is so simple. Good or bad, at least she is doing something.

At this point i would be happy with Celine doing anything, even laying down in a lingerie trying too hard to be sexy. (I rather not, though).

Mariah has been with Epic/Sony since 2015,when she released the greatest hits album #1 To Infinity, to promote her show in Vegas. Every release (singles) since then had been under Epic label. Last year she created a label of her own with her ex manager, but it's still under Epic and Sony Music.
