In your dreams. All music videos must be shot in front of a green screen with Celine alone twirling around by herself mouthing the lyrics. It must be void of any creativity and story line, as per Sony stipulations.

This list just shows how underrated Celine is in the US imo. But at the same time she is one of 2 international/bilingual singers on that list.

 

Mariah and Janet may be in the top 3 but I don't know any of their songs (maybe 2 of Mariah). Idk, they may have had big hits but being number one for a couple of weeks doesn't mean their music is as well known. Maybe it's just me but I name at least 8 of Celine's songs even before I was a hardcore fan, back when I was a "oh yeah Celine Dion, she's really good" type fan.

If Celine were a US-American (like Madonna,WH and MC), they would treat her like her queen. Believe me.

Talking about looks and expectations for the album photoshoot, every time I see this TV commercial she did in 2002 gives me chills, not only for the amazing and inspiring landscape (looks like taken straight from the ANDHC album cover), but also for Céline's natural beauty here

 

Why she has to dress up like a model and overdo her image so much in her last album photoshoots, when she can look incredible just wearing jeans, a long blouse and loose hair?

 

And walking by the beach... the most beautiful setting and the most cheap photoshoot at the same time! It's all advantages!

Actually it has in some extent. Celine not being American (and non-English native on top of that) has surely affected her sales there, I'm sure of that. It's only natural that you are more loved as an artist in your own country, and it's probably harder to enter a market that being there already. If she was American I'm pretty sure she would have sold more in USA and probably had more hit singles there (giving all the other factors in her career would have remained the same). But in any case, she did pretty well there, top seller of the 90s and second best female seller of SoundScan era (behind Mariah).

 

On the other hand, she being French speaking artist has allowed Celine to have a more solid international career, so she doesn't need to always sell well in US to still manage million sellers (e.g LMBTL). Mariah, Christina or Britney have basically US to relay on, if they flop there the album is dead.

of course Céline sold huge amounts in the USA because of her talent, and yes she's more an album seller, than single seller

 

(But that's also to do with the policy of Sony USA. For instance, there weren't that many singles of MWHGO pressed in the USA, because Sony wanted the public to buy the soundtrack or LTAL instead. MHWGO could have been a bigger no 1 hit for her, with far more sales USA: 2,358,000, which is a lot, but if you put those sales to sales in Germany 2m, UK 1,6m or France 1.2m, then that's not that much.)

 

Anyway, Céline has always been mocked in the American press, cos of her accent, her expressions etc. Now if she was American, they would have treated her like royalty from the start, like Barbra, Whitney and Mariah. She went through a lot of shaming by the press and I am sure that that has effected a lot of the public's opinion and thus sales (either single or album).

Yes! I recently learnt about the MHWGO CD single in the USA, apparently it was pressed just like a "limited edition". Strange!!! :mellow:

By the time MHWGO was released, Celine was already established as an “albums seller.” I’d think that being known for selling over 200 million albums, as opposed to 200 million records (albums and singles combined) would be a much bigger feat. I’ve always been so proud of her for that. She sold over 200 million of one format of media, rather than the span of singles, albums etc. That to me is absolutely incredible.

Music companies could also make a cd single « die » if it had already hit its peak position, hopefully #1. That cd single had done it’s job, time for the next one or time for people to buy the whole album 😉

She said "I'll be back, I promise" in a Spanish TV show in 2002 when she visited Madrid, for a music TV show which had a millionaire audience, and even made the sign of the cross on her chest when saying it, and the interviewers didn't even ask her when she would be back, nor reproached her anything or why did she take so long to come: she said that totally spontaneuously, when they said "we missed you", regarding the new music and the new album released.

 

And that was in 2002. Now it's been 16 years later and no sign of Céline stepping on Spanish land ever since then -_-
