Funny how many people dislike Why Oh Why, it's deffo in my top 5 of LTAL songs Why oh why is one of my favorite too! 1 Quote
Nmj Posted July 26, 2023 at 02:15 AM Posted July 26, 2023 at 02:15 AM Yes! It gets old when some people consider someone like Mariah Carey to be more of an “artist” because she wrote songs. Tina Turner didn’t write her own songs… nor did Whitney Houston… the list is long. And these are brilliant artists/performers. And I’m more so referencing people I see in the comments of YouTube videos and on social media. Fans of “the vocal trinity” (Celine, Whitney, Mariah) tend to claim Mariah is more of an artist because she’s written some songs. Whereas I think they all bring different things to the table and are brilliant in different ways. I could care less for Mariah but she hasn’t written some songs, she’s written 17/18 of her number one singles. The only exception is “When You Believe” with Whitney. 1 Quote
PuraVida Posted July 26, 2023 at 03:43 AM Posted July 26, 2023 at 03:43 AM The excess of covers in her live repertoire is quite controversial, but I confess I always took it as an expression of her pure joy in making music on stage - her own or others', who cares, when there's fun to be had Even more: I see in it her anti-narcissistic side, and that's so rare in her profession! I agree. She just loves music so much, she has songs stuck in her head for years, even decades! She simply wants to perform them. My issue is that she lets the same covers go on a bit too long sometimes, notably the Prince medley and "You're The Voice" ... there are probably others that aren't springing to mind atm. Quote

What irks me sometimes is when people try to use that fact to diminish Celine or Whitney or Tina etc because they didn’t write their songs. And I still feel like Celine has more classics that will stand the test of time compared to Mariah. Even if Celine’s songs weren’t all #1 hits. Beauty and the Beast, My Heart Will Go On, It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, etc are more epic and timeless in my opinion than songs like Honey or Fantasy. Not to mention Celine’s many brilliant French songs. Edited July 26, 2023 at 04:23 AM by smw Quote

Fans of “the vocal trinity” (Celine, Whitney, Mariah) tend to claim Mariah is more of an artist because she’s written some songs. Whereas I think they all bring different things to the table and are brilliant in different ways. Newer generations seems to care way more about singers-songwriters. Personally, as a fan of both Celine and Mariah, I don’t believe a singer is more of an artist because they write their own songs. If you’re a singer, not a songwriter, but you carefully choose songs for you to record to translate the feelings you have or the message you want to pass, you’re an artist. Unfortunately, Celine’s anglophone career fails on that either. Her discography in english feels like something put together by a marketing team, with her having no connection whatsoever with most of the songs, which is why she never bothered to sing them again. There’s no history behind. That being said, I don’t think this is reason enough to diminish Celine on the vocal trinity. All 3 of them fails on that, one way or another. Quote
smw Posted July 26, 2023 at 06:31 AM Posted July 26, 2023 at 06:31 AM Celine seems to have a strong connection to a good amount of her English songs - but not all of them. I’m sure Rene and her team played a big part in what Celine recorded so it makes sense she wasn’t as connected to them all. There are some pivotal songs in her English career that she seems to really feel ownership over/a big connection to - like The Prayer, The Reason, Immortality, Seduces Me, AllBy Myself, etc. I think she really loved Dreams to Dream too… she recorded it during a point where she was trying to breakthrough in her English career and prove herself - and I hope we all get to hear her rendition someday. 1 Quote

smw Posted July 26, 2023 at 07:10 PM Posted July 26, 2023 at 07:10 PM (edited) The Colour of My Love is another big English song that Celine feels connected to. And there are stories where she went to bat for several of the English songs she recorded -- like Ten Days and the re-recording of Falling Into You so that she'd be satisfied with the final take. I think she has a deeper connection to her English material than we might give her credit for. She'd often sing a few lines from other songs like Let's Talk About Love in interviews/while meeting fans. She tends to stick with the hits and crowd-pleasing covers for live performance because she always wants to put on an amazing show for general audiences. And deep cuts from her past albums is moreso for hardcore fans like us, which is a limited audience. With that said, it would have been wonderful for Celine to do a One Night Only for us big fans. Who knows, it might still happen one day. Edited July 26, 2023 at 07:11 PM by smw 3 Quote

She tends to stick with the hits and crowd-pleasing covers for live performance because she always wants to put on an amazing show for general audiences. I don't know, she pulled David Bowie and "You're The Voice" out of nowhere! And remember "Twist and Shout"? I think she chose a lot of covers just because she loves them, and made them crowd pleasing because she's Celine...personally I could have done without "Let's Dance" and later versions of YTV. Abodi2002 Posted November 19, 2023 at 05:00 AM Posted November 19, 2023 at 05:00 AM Sorry if this has been discussed here before, but what do you think about who love you more being included on the US version of this album? Personally, I think it fits more, maybe because that’s the version I grew up with. My grandma got the copy with 16 songs in the bonus CD, not sure which addition it is, But I was disappointed that to love you more was not included. I mean why put it on the Paris 1995 album, even though it’s not live? 1 Quote
