I wish I could answer all of your questions and I’m gonna try my hardest and definitely tell you a bit more about the song. I wrote and produced "The Art of Letting Go" with my friend, the uber talented Rodney Jerkins. We had worked together before, but this time around, I feel we went down a more organic path in terms of our approach to the songwriting process. "The Art of Letting Go" was the second of two beloved songs I wrote with Rodney for this album. As we were writing, we both got goosebumps and a feeling of nostalgia. It might sound over the top but when I was singing this song, I felt like I had touched upon certain emotions within myself that I haven’t put on a record in a very long time. Other than that the music is monotone, you can barely tell when the chorus (which I have totally forgotten) kicks in. The lyrics are awkward as she goes from basic sentences ''Letting go ain't easy'' to using ''big words'' as if she went through a dictionary while she was writing the song. ''Go to MiMi on your contacts, press delete'' made me cringe. Her voice sounds very full in the soft verses which is a sign of improvement. However her high notes are overproduced and robotic, obviously edited in the studio. She's done nothing close to these powerful, full voice beltings the past 5 years or so. I give this song a 5/10. It sounds like 1960's Motown feel. Mariah's voice(even though there must some editing) sounds great and it is just good. Though I feel like this song is missing something. I don't know whether its the beat, the lyrics, or something I can't put my finger to it. I am not hating on Mariah. Just being honest. I'm no prude and can cuss like a sailor but...no. TAOLG is a fine album cut. Certainly not single material and certainly not the new single of the decade that she's hoping for. It took a while to get used to for me. I didn't really enjoy the way she was rushing in the beginning but now I love it! It's gotten some good reviews so that's never a bad thing! I'm pretty sure that shoot for the cover of the song was when she was doing American Idol. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was. And yes it's obviously photoshopped but I never hold that against her. 1 Quote
