Is Glitter worth a watch? I'm asking because I'm intrigued and want to have a watch.

 

It's such a bad film (basic senario, bad acting, cheesy dialogues), but I feel you're going to like it.

Yangedd, in my opinion, Glitter isn't as bad as people say it is. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a pretty basic film, but I hate when people try to lump it in the "so bad it's good" category. Because I don't think it truly transcends its poor quality to become enjoyable in that way. I just think it's a subpar film without much originality to it. Not everything has to be original to be a joy to watch, but Glitter is just like... happy being mediocre, I guess.

maybe there are better singers than Mariah and better songwriters too, but I don't think there's an artist who surpasses Mariah in BOTH areas, and that's huge!

I realy liked it. But I love these kind of 'music movies'.

It can be best compared to Double Platinum (starring Diana Ross and Brandy). Although I prefer Double Platinum to Glitter.

But I like both.

Other music movies I like: Crossroads (Britney), Burlesque (Xtina), The Bodyguard (Whitney), Dick Tracy (Madonna).

i would rather u watch "Wisegirls" ...its a decent movie with some decent comedy & acting in it; the cast is good too!! atleast u wont feel like u wasted ur time. "Glitter"... well... i like it, only coz there's Mariah in it. its more like watching a looooooong music video with a few cheesy dialogues in it. the movie does have its moments though; as much as i find this movie really bad, the climax scene still gets me!!!

I'm lucky that my partner LOVES musicals and I have such a good choice to choose from.

oh!! this SUCKS!!!! this is more like "Memoirs... " all over again. im so maaaaaaaaaaad!!! there was such hype surrounding her new album & "#Beautiful" had such potential ...they ruined it completely with that stupid music video & lame a$$ promotion!!! i cannot understand why Island Def Jam would snub someone like Mariah & spend all their money to R'goat'ihanna!!! This would only be a good situation if they recorded a duet that both included in their new albums and performed it live on TV to promote both records. Like when Mariah and Whitney promoted "When You Believe" back in 1999, a song that was included in Mariah's "#1's" album and Whitney's "My Love Is Your Love".

A few notes approaching

 

I don't feel When You Believe was THAT great of a promotional tool for Mariah and Whitney. It got a lot of attention and advance hype just because it was the two of them, and then it peaked at 15th place and 35th on Top 40 Radio. It couldn't even hit #1 on Adult Contemporary. The record Mariah was promoting, #1's, was a greatest hits album, and those were pretty decent business anyway in the 90s. Whitney's album debuted at 13th place and sold 123,000 in the first week, and a lot of articles from the time note surprise and disappointment at those numbers. Mariah was selling to people who wanted her biggest songs in one place, and Whitney was trying to sell to an audience who didn't like the first single and knew nothing else of the album which was actually a lot younger and edgier than that song.

 

As for Celine and Mariah, I don't think they've ever released on the same date, but they've been pretty close. I think the closest they've come to each other was in 1999, when Rainbow came out two weeks or so before All The Way...

 

Imo, they won't duet. Maybe in some live event where it's like a medley of some icon's hits, Idk. But in a recording studio, no. They just don't make the same kind of music anymore, first of all. Someone would end up sounding out of place. And then there's the motivation behind making one. It's like this Catch-22 where they can't just sit on a Celine Dion/Mariah Carey duet and not release it as a single, but releasing it as a single is no guarantee because it's not 1997 anymore and it's even questionable whether Adult Contemporary radio would want it. And so if it didn't do well (which is a strong likelihood), the media would be like "oh wow, their days really ARE over, huh..." Artistically it could be a nice thing (though again, I could see Mariah not being here for it - not because she's an a-hole or anything but because it's not the music she wants to make), but it's never just about art in any business.

I agree, such a duet would get huge publicity and both their albums could potentially benefit from that.

We'll have to see how Mariah's album ultimately sounds. I don't think Almost Home is where she would naturally go creatively, and that she did something to satisfy Disney. Her usual ghetto beatz and whispery nonsense wouldn't have flown for an Oz movie.

 

And that's my other thing. While I personally wouldn't object to a Mariah/Celine duet because I love them both so much, the media can be very cynical and hostile, and I can see them sharpening their knives, waiting to tear it apart before it even came out. It could be spun as desperate, trying to cling to a time that's long since passed, etc. When You Believe came out in the decade when Whitney and Mariah were at or near the height of their respective popularities, and it was still commercially disappointing. And it arguably had an adverse effect on Whitney's initial album sales. My point is just that, there might be a flurry of media activity before and at the song's release, but radio play might be another story. Even at her own peak, Top 40 approached Celine hesitantly. She only had one era where they were really behind her for several singles in a row.

 

I'm just thinking from an American perspective, and I see you guys are both from Europe, so I don't want to sound condescending or like I'm trying to school you or whatever, or that no other territory matters; but American radio is really weird when it comes to this kind of thing. If you take an artist like Mariah who's now known for making hip-hop and R&B, and suddenly put her in a power ballad AC dress, radio programmers would act like chickens with their heads cut off. It wouldn't even be "oh well this song fits our programming, so we can play it!" It would be "we don't play Mariah Carey, and playing this would confuse our listeners." They genuinely believe that and largely adhere to that kind of thinking. And Top 40 programmers would be like "Celine is too old, we can't play a Celine song in between Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber." In the 90s it would have worked, but it's SO restrictive now. That's where I was coming from.

That's why a duet would help both Celine and Mariah. The two are over 40 years old so it would not damage any of their careers at this point.
