Canadian pop superstar Celine Dion performed on the Chinese mainland for the first time, with a concert at the 50,000-seat Shanghai Stadium Friday evening.

 

Though the Beijing concert had been canceled, the Shanghai performance was confirmed to be a big success.

 

A leather suit accompanied the slim diva during the 90-minute concert to protect her just-recovered voice in this early spring weather.

 

The star opened the show with "Drove all night", "Power of love", "Because you love me", which sounded familiar to the Chinese audience.

 

She also selected a song "My Love" from her latest album, "Taking Chances," which was released last November.

 

And the following French songs and rock songs made the concert-goers more excited.

 

Finally, Dion performed two famous songs of English rock band Queen, "We will rock you", "Show must go on" and concluded the show with one of her best-known songs, "My Heart Will Go On," from the 1997 blockbuster film "Titanic".

 

The Shanghai concert is part of the artist's "Taking Chances" world tour. Dubbed as "the best selling female artist in the world," Dion has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, according to figures released by her record company Sony BMG.

 

Born to a large impoverished family in Quebec, Dion, the youngest of 14 children, first gained international recognition in the 1980s after she won the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest.

 

Dion achieved worldwide success with the release of several English and French albums.

 

At the height of her success in 1999, Dion announced a temporary withdrawal from entertainment in order to start a family and enjoy life. Her music has been influenced by genres ranging from pop, soul, and rock to classical and gospel.

 

She is also one of the best known Western pop singers in China. In 1999, she held a sold-out concert at the old Kai Tak airport runway in Hong Kong.

It was actually NOT sold-out. There were a lot of vacant seats at the back zone. Press always claimed it was sold out but it actually not.

After that artistico-diplomatic incident, Dion's clique says they didn't face any problem with chinese authorities.

 

So, if Beijin''s show was cancelled, it wasn't a protest. So why was it cancelled?

 

Things remain uncertain. First celine in the afternoon said: "I'm very lucky that I'm not aware of all the details surrounding this cancellation. It's a very complicated situation"

Then a few hours later, rené angelil says : "there've been some issues with the place she was suposed to sing at. That's all I can tell you."

After watching the full concert, I think the show is great. At least, it is better than Macau. I don't know if this happens only to me. Maybe I sat rather far from the stage so I didn't see Celine clearly as much as watching from the video.

 

But what in common is the atmosphere. The audiences are quiet and don't scream loudly like Au Coeur Du Stade, and the concert ends very quick.

 

To me, it seems they wanted to finish the concert as soon as possible. The pause between RVD,MTH and MHWGO is very short. Backdrop screen for LCMM is not used but some scenes from Titanic is added instead.

 

What is standard for the show? Who is the director of the show?

 

 

 

 

I think maybe I watch the Au Coeur Du Stade DVD too much and that makes me expect too much from a concert.

I think, as fans, we always expect too much and then get disappointed too easily when it happens. I think we should try to just enjoy the show as it is. It is a different tour now, different set up, different routines, different stage. Heck, even different instrumentalists!

Watching now, it's a great gift! I'm up to TPOL, I have to say she looks bored out of her mind. lol They should drop it from her shows once and for all.

You see, you can tell even by bootleg. I don't mean she sounds bad, it's just like she's totally bored.

The show picked up though, cos other songs are much better. But I think TPOL especially seems to be doing nothing for her anymore, it was as if she wanted to be singing anything but that. Just standing there like a turnip waiting for it to finish which isn't how it's supposed to be.

 

And I think having only one costume makes the show seem shorter, cos there aren't the definitive segments that you associate with her costume changes like Fashionista and Soul etc. And when she came out after the musical breaks it was a bit of an anticlimax cos nothing was new and she just carried on as before. I think if there are more countries where she must wrap up warm or wear less revealing clothing they should have a few more costumes like that for her to wear so people in these countries don't feel like they missed out on something.
